aim times would be a great way to distinguish artillery too

mortars being shortest, with heavier and heavier artillery being longer

Arty was the single biggest killer on the battlefield. US doctrine was usually to make contact then call in arty to kill the enemy. That said this is a game where inching forward for 4 hours while calling in 105s would be boring.

I always liked how world in conflict did arty. Off map that cost points. To call in a bunch of 105s from off map is more realistic. I doubt either side would bring in their main batteries to a hotbox like this. THis is one thing I didnt like about the war game series. This one simulates arty pretty well with its devasting effects. But it should be called from off map. I would even propose instead of buying actual units you purchase barrages. US battery of Priests, Round A = 2x4 guns , Round B = 4x4guns, Round C = 6x6guns barrages per purchase. Each barrage takes 30-60 seconds to call in depending on veteren status. The small stuff like 80mm mortars did follow front line units and should be purchasable. They are also much less devastating.

In 2v2 and 1v1 the balance is pretty good. Useful to have some arty, but it's not good enough that you're bringing more than a couple to the field. Plenty of games where the only artillery seen for most of the game is a cheap mortar near the biggest concentration of buildings, maybe a rocket or off-map later on.

It's funny that lots of people are saying that on map artillery is too fast and Off-map artillery is fine because of the slow aim time. Off map arty and on map arty have very similar aim times. Only light mortars are notably faster.

Artillery is seen as so effective for a couple of reasons: Most people and new players in particular tend to play extremely passively. (I don't blame them, pulling off a push is hard.) They're putting AT guns, half tracks, and infantry all over the place as they're the best at turtling. So you've got lots of stationary unarmored targets and not much threat of anything reaching your arty.

I assume most people are talking about 3v3-10v10 when they are complaining about artillery. Those maps have up to double the funds being spent on a given area compared to 1v1 and 2v2, so artillery is even stronger since AoE is more valuable and it's harder to make a push since there are so many units on the front line.

I wouldn't expect artillery to change. 2v2 and 1v1 is where it makes sense to focus balancing efforts and is where Eugen have focused balancing in the past. Just have to accept that the larger player count games will be an unbalanced cluster**** as it is with every strategy game.

Since the patch with 2e French and 21 Panzer Div I somehow feel that I see less arty then before.
Still heavy sure but still less than before. Even though 21 having early rockets and such.

Somehow makes sense because both Divs are good at pushing aggressively and thats bad for artillery even for your own because it has to be repositioned and might not be able to keep up.

Yeah, I've made calls to nerf arty but it's probably better to hold off until we can see what it's like with all the divisions, just like the axis phase A issue. The problem came to a head when we got two extremely arty-focused divisions.

I think a reduction on ammunition carried by artillery pieces would be a great help, requiring supply to be on hand. This coupled by increased aim time would solve most problems we see.

The worst amount of arty happened when the 2nd US and 17th were added, two arty heavy decks slugging it out with half the team on both sides using them resulting in WW1 trench warfare
