Does this mean the hero wearing the item has to personally do the slaying? I know "win battles" goes to all the artifacts that the participating heroes were wearing, though apparently auto-battle doesn't count which is kind of bullshit, but I can't seem to get anything to count towards it despite having killed several generals. Does this mean there's a difference between a hero and general?
I did some testing on this issue. Killing heroes will work even if the one dealing the final blow is a member of the hero's bodyguard, not the hero himself.
The same goes for Lancelot's Grail Shard, so those killed by his comerades will also count towards the 50 killed enemy soldiers.
Soldiers killed by the rest of the squad however won't count. The requirements for the items are low enough to be doable by either a Sage (spells can kill dozens of soldiers at once, so 2-300 is not that many for them) or a Champion (the Cleave skill can be useful here), although you might consider not giving such items to Warlords as they will probably have a harder time racking up enough kills.
I also checked Auto Battles and they do count towards the number of battles won.
On the other hand - and this might not be immediately clear - the hero needs to wear the item in question in order for the requirements to make any progress. If you have a sword in your chest back in your warcamp, it won't benefit from those hundreds of souls slain on the battlefield! Only the equiped items will 'gain experience'.
And no, there are no 'generals' in the game, only heroes.
