1. Ships/Fleets that run out of org just keep 'escaping' combat. There's no way to destroy the ships. Can't bomb them either.

2. Must fix the unlimited range of AI ships.

Playing as argentina and i got this US invasion fleet (20 transports and 4 destroyers) on my doorsteps trying to land 20 divisions. Well i'm holding off with 1 division on the shore, but i do have a battlefleet. Problem is i can't destroy it 'cause at first contact they run - battle never happens.

So what they do is just float around off the coast of argentina and just keeps on attempting an assault - until my ships show up and they just 'retreat' and try again in a few hours.

Its farkin annoying!!!! There's absolutely nothing i can do about it. And what is it with the unlimited range from ships while under AI control? The US has no possibility of ever reaching me under normal conditions, yet here they are launching an invasion.

I suppose i could let the US troops land and 'then' wipe them out... the problem is, i can't really counter their 20 divisions atm and the only safety i have are my own ships. So atm i'm left only with loading up the US and deleteing/disbanding their ships + units on them and just 'call it even'.

My personal suggestions for the next patch:

1. Allow at least 1 combat round when engaging a 'no-org' fleet.

2. Fleets that retreated because of lack of org MUST retreat to their homebase before getting new orders.

3. Please no unlimited range on AI ships???

#1 Is WAD - while a ship retreats you usually have several additional rounds to shoot at it. With enough firepower this should rarely be an issue if you completly own the enemy fleet anyway.

#2 Yep, but I guess that *will* be fixed sooner or later.

The TP problem is - btw - also persistent in combat: TPs will often go out of range and no combat commences, though there are no other enemy ships. I will open a bug report on this later.

The obvious scapegoat is the constant storms over all ocean provinces. If a ship wants to get away it is much easier to do so in bad weather than clear skies.

In 1.1 I had this happen to me as Germany. I had a large US transport fleet ping pong between two of my fleets. The US fleet never seemed to get hurt but several ships of mine got hit hard by friendly fire. The moment I withdrew my fleets the US started invading my shores. This was going on for months! I got fed up with this and edited my save game and gave all the US ships in that fleet 0.001 health and I could finally sink the damn fleet. Very annoying!

Another thing I noticed was that US carriers seem to carry non CAG airunits. When US tried to invade France they bombed my defences with TACs and STR. They also attacked my scrambling interceptors and fighters with their own interceptors and fighters (their aircraft didn't come from allied airbases in Europe since all western Europe and North Africa was either conquered, in the Axis or neutral). Or maybe the AI aircraft have unlimited range the same way their ships have?

I haven't had this occur yet in my first 1.2 game, but that game is only early 1939.

AI ships have unlimited range???

Paradox stated many times during development, that AI will use same rules as human player and there will no longer be unlimited range fleets...

Can anyone confirm this? Is computer really sailing further than his range is?

AI ships have unlimited range???

Yes. AFAIK, they have had it in all Paradox games since EU1. I recall someone* claiming that it was fixed in HoI3, but it isn't. (Another someone* claimed that this time it was just a bug and that it was going to be corrected, but i believe that when i see it.)

*not sure if it was a developer or just a moderator.

Isn't most of the naval combat problems caused by the perpetual rain over the seas?
Yep.

Horrible weather makes it both easier for your opponent to escape, and harder for your guns to hit them as they run. Hopefully with proper weather, those fleeing transports would be dead ducks.

As someone that was most interested in fighting the Pacific war in HoI3, I'm of the opinion that the weather REALLY needs fixed. (And the unlimited range thing, definitely!)

Darn, I was looking forward to naval combat is my US game, building up my Pacific and Atlantic Fleets up. But it sounds like only land combat is more fun at the moment. I'm now wondering if I should I continue concentrating on my navy or look towards building up my army instead, and invade Fortress Europa.

I was also curious; Is island hopping possible currently in HoI3? I've got an Army of Marines eager to go?;)

Appreciate some more experienced players insights.

Island hopping is fine in HOI3 I haven’t done it as the US but had no problem as Japan , in fact I was quite surprised how easy it was, I bumped into a US fleet of a reasonable size once. While I captured all the islands. Its a bit of a pain because the AI can sail unlimited distances you need to leave some INF on each Island.

On the unlimited range of AI I am have seen less crazy stuff (did see US invade Italian occupied Finland). But now that Japan controls the panama canal I have had no Asian convoys sunk for a year and attempted island invasions seem to have stopped. Kind of working?
