I don't really understand how army tradition works while in battle. It doesn't matter of the outcome win or loose I always end up getting less army tradition. Is there anyway to change the outcome of this as I end up coming 2nd best every time. thank you for your time :)

I think the answer is pick on someone your own size. That is, national force limits (or perhaps basetax or other factors) seems to be a big factor, regardless of force ratio in the battle.

I don't think Army tradition does affect combat directly, but improves morale and leader stats when generated.

As for gains, I think the defender gets more than the attacker, and it relates to your troops % of total force limit

I don't think the defense gets more as I was defending that battle and got 0.8 to there 5. So force limits play a part hmm its a little weird how that works. I thought it was down to battle victorys. thanks chaps :)

I don't think anyone has ever done a comprehensive analysis on how much tradition is gained from a battle for either side. Sometimes it seems totally arbitrary, thus I usually just click through battle conclusion windows because it rarely tells me anything useful. I know there have been times where i've soundly stomped the other side and they gain an impressive amount of tradition like your screenshot depicts. But there have also been times where my troops have gotten their asses stomped all over and I squeek out with barely any tradition gain. Then there are times where i've done stack wipes and as attacker I gain the max 5 tradition.

Edit: I do know you don't gain any tradition for wiping single stacks. So when waging war as a small nation and you've decisively won the war and sieging down provinces, don't kill single stacks unless you have to, try to wait for them to consolidate into 2 or 3 and then wipe them so you at least gain .1 or .2 tradition.

Generally you get more for the % of your troops that you lose in battle, that part is important because if you can follow your vassal with his 4k stack into battle you usually end up getting 5 tradition as well.

From the screenshot it looks like France followed Armagnac into battle and lost so Armagnac lost most their forcelimits (or whatever the measure is?) in men and therefore get a nice +5 trad.

You get +1 per successful siege so you'll be fine after you win the HYW ;) I think your vassals contribute to that as well although I'm not 100% sure. It used to work before 1.8 that you could let an ally siege up to whatever you want to risk, say 21% and breached walls, then move your 2k on and they'll move off giving you the siege and army trad (unless it was their claim/core) but that doesn't work reliably anymore :(

I have been on some close battles wins and loses with around the same amount of kills each but it still comes out with the getting around 5ish and me around 0.1-1 usually. This will happen even without vassals getting involved. Still unsure how it works if its I wonder if its a npc perk so they get better generals perhaps.

Don't take my post at face value, but I remember a guy doing some calculations a few centuries ago and he ended up finding that sieges generate more than actual combat.
