I just lost a battle to an army twice the size of mine (100K) and the enemy got 21 army tradition.... yeah that's right 21, two digits were talking here, from one battle and they outnumbered me by a huge amount.... That's like a whole 20 years of constant wars for me to gain 20 army tradition and they got it from one battle, a battle they won as well... Should I not be the one gaining the 21 army tradition???? correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the whole point of not gaining as much army tradition on battles won was to prevent strong nations from snowballing military wise.

I'm just going to assume the AI gets some sort of buff in regards to tradition gained, so I guess I'd just like to know how I as the player can gain army tradition?

I mean, you've kind of answered the second half with the first half: The AI gets a buff to traiition gained. You can get tradition like that by being the AI.

I was hoping for more of a realistic answer that I could apply to my game "How I as the player can gain army tradition" Basically I asked how to gain more army tradition as the player, sorry you misunderstood

Winning battles, and losing troops while doing so. If you want to save your manpower, hire some mercs then trigger some separatists, kill them, trigger some more, etc.

Sieging forts will also add to your army tradition for each fort, each time you siege it down.

The smaller you are, the first mechanic will give you relatively more tradition than the second. The bigger you are, the second mechanic give you relatively more than the first.

"How I as the player can gain army tradition"
The nobles and Cossacks estate both have a privilege that gives yearly army tradition.

Wining battles/ Losing battles.

Sieging a fort gives 2 AT, regardless of amount of troops or level of fort. Do be aware that you do have to be the siege leader. I tried testing it a couple weeks ago, and I don't think my AT went up when my vassal was the one that started the siege. Stacking siege ability is really nice cause it helps when the AI has forts every other province, and the quicker you siege forts, the more you can siege, the more AT you can accumulate.

Aristocratic, Defensive, Quality have an Idea that gives army tradition, or tradition decay. Offensive gives siege ability, so it helps speed sieges up, but gives no tradition directly.

There is a general trait that gives double the army tradition from battles.

Some NI include army tradition like Prussia and Castile.

Side Note getting 20 AT from one battle while a lot isn't out of reach for the player, given the right circumstances. I don't know how but I was fighting the commonwealth the other day when they became the revolutionary target and I won a battle and got 15 AT all at once. I think there was something like over 100k on both sides, I've never looked up the formula for AT gain but it seemed like an extreme outlier from what I normally see. My FL was something like 1600 at the time so it wasn't even 30% of my whole army fighting.

Edit: Forgot to include forts. Every fort you have gives army tradition up to +1 per year. It's based on every 50 dev. So if you have 200 dev and 4 up to date forts fully maintained you would be getting +1 AT per year. IMO maintaining the ratio for the full bonus isn't worth it, I usually try to hit roughly .5, and boarder forts help stop the AI from running me around in circles in my own land.

I never get any tradition from merc only armies.
