In my current game as Germany i decided to see how effective an An entire army of paratroopers could be to me for operation barbarossa. So i built an army consisting of 5 corps, with 5 divisions in each, with 4 brigades in each division.

I realized two things in doing this.

1. Building transport planes seems to be a very fast and effective way to improve your Heavy Aircraft Practical.

2. An entire army of paradroppers dropped in the middle of two very large pincer movements is crippling for the AI. It simply has no answer for it, and now i find my self encircling the enemy not 1 or two provinces at a time, but up to 6 or 7.

Im also finding quite fun to do. =D

anyone else tried this tactic yet?

Against the AI anything goes.
Next time you should try an army of armoured cars or HQs.

...the latter one also worked in HoI2:

Oh and, btw, the ICE mod offers ground fallschirmjäger infantry as a sperate unit, so you might want to check it out.

Yeah, but I don't have any problems with the fact that the AI has no answer for it. How many real armies do you think would have an answer if you dropped 375000 paratroopers on a 200km front? Thats two for each meter of front ^^

The problem is that the real version would require you to launch about 20000 transport airplanes in a matter of a few hours to achieve surprise... This seems alot easier to do in HoI3 then in reality :)

Historically, after the losses at Crete (I think it was Crete) the Germans never attempted any more paradrop missions but they still used the ariborne soldiers in traditional combat. This is relfected in the ICE mod as having "airborne" brigades that are no longer air droppable but have slightly better stats than a regular infantry brigade. More for historical flavor than anything else.

Hmmm - seems like pointless proliferation to me. A Paratrooper division that is deployed and used in the manner of a standard infantry division would cover that historical niche quite well. I used them in such a fashion when I didnt pay attention to Hungary, and it suddenly joined Comintern and started an invasion of Germany whilst most of my troops were rolling into Russia.

not entirely. a falschirmjäger division was more like heavy-elite infantry and no longer able to perform airborne operations.

I'm well aware of Germany's reluctance to do airborne assaults after Crete, but why would you call a unit that can't paradrop Fallschirmjäger? Did the Germans still form new Paratrooper units knowing full well that they will never actually drop them ever again? Did these units forget how to pack a parachute? :p

In Sicily, the Germans did drop their "ground fallschirmjager" close behind their own lines as a way to rapidly reinforce the front line. Gets there a ton faster than strategic redeployment. Late war airborne operations were small scale after Crete. The rescue of Mussolini and Von Heydte's drop in the Battle of the Bulge come to mind. Von Heydte's mission was Germany's last airborne operation of the war. There were only 3,000 Germans who had actually jumped out of an airplane this late in the war. Not all of Von Heydte's men had jump experience.

Hmm, if I remember currently you are clearly talking about older version of ICE. Currently everyone can build heavy paratroopers with current techs researched (Germany only has a slight lead in these techs so they can usually field them first), and they can also paradrop but weight more due their heavier weaponry. A good component of late-war airborne divisions alongside with glider artillery, airborne engineers and even Locust-style airborne tanks that ICE also features.

why should they call the GD division a panzergrenadier division (mechanized division) when it was a heavy tank division? falschirmjäger were something special, elite and they kept the name but it doesn't mean they could perform airborn operations.
think about görings "Fallschirm-Panzer-Division".

That's made them just a normal Infantry division with some extra training.

Hmmm - seems like pointless proliferation to me.

Look at the German order of battle and their arms production. For a country that almost won WW2, they continuously wasted effort in "pointless proliferation". The ICE mod gives you the chance to do the same (not that he has a special Luftwaffe Panzer Grenadier division).

Also,
The FJ Divisions were Luftwaffe formations, along with the Luftwaffe Feld Divisions controlled by Goring, not Wehrmacht formations. That was the primary reason for their continued existance as "Fallschirmjaeger" divisions. The "Ground Fallschirmjaeger" divisions in ICE are a representation of the fact that they were "sort of...kind of" Airborne formations....without transport planes. Flavor....nothing else, but I like it.

Just to pick some nit. The Wehrmacht includes the Luftwaffe. They were not part of the Heer though.

That is the fun of the forum. you ask a question, and the answers lead to an entiurely other diascussion.

I once asked a question about Italy invading britan, and it turns into a discussion of Germany invading the SU. Good times!
