Okay, so as experienced players know you have the theater HQ, Army group HQ, Army HQ, Corp HQ, division and brigade. We know that the leadership abilities are passed down the chain of command and my question or proposition is why not just eliminate all but theater HQ and divisions. You can then assigned your best general to the Theater HQ and have 50% of his skill passed directly to the division. Or does it work like that? It would make micromanagement much easier to simply do that plus they would get better leadership bonus as you only have a few 5 star skilled generals and you can't have too many of them at corps level except maybe on average 2 or 3 star ones.

All the HQ's from Corps to Theatre add certain bonuses to units under their command, so if you only have 1 HQ above the divisions you'll be sacrificing all the other bonuses. One of the Manuals tells you exactly what each level of HQ does, but I know that traits are passed down to units in decreasing increments.

Besides traits that are passed down with 50% reduction at each level, each level of HQs has their own unique bonus:
Corps HQ - increased chance of division sitting in reserve during combat to join the fight and start shooting, if frontage is available.
Army HQ - increased ORG for subordinate units.
Army Group HQ - reduced supply and fuel usage by subordinate units.
Theater HQ - reduced combat stacking penalty for subordinate units.
All bonuses depend on leader's skill level. By skipping on Corps, Army and Army Group HQ, you miss out on the corresponding bonuses. Also, leader's traits that are passed down are NOT dependent on leader's skill. Thus, by using the chain you proposed, a CA unit can get only 15% CA bonus from leaders - 10% from division commander, 5% from Theater commander. But with a full chain of command, maximum CA bonus from leaders can be 10+5+2.5+1.25+0.625=19.375% - almost 5% more in absolute terms. More traits - more gain.

if your division is a combined arms division there is a white tank symbol on its card this will show you the bonuses you are getting from your command tree, it can reach as high as 45-50 % depending on tech and which leaders you use .

Not only that but the Army Group level is very important and where you should be placing your highest level commanders. For each skill level at AG you get a 5% per level supply reduction for all the troops under his command, that cover up to 5 full armies. So for example a level 5 commander gives a 5x5 or 25% reduction, that's huge.

Plus all the above trait stacking and the other perks of a full HQ hierarchy makes it worthwhile.
