yes, it would be formidable, I do use that system. Only issue is the conquistors death.

I suggest you never use artillery with him as it will slow him down.

I use about, no more than 5000 infantry and cavalry combined, it seems enough.

btw, use these troops to garrison once you start colonizing

The only issue I see with using only 5000 infantry and cavalry combined is that the attrition rate would be significant enough that by the time you march them to where you need to go, you will lose quite a bit of that force.

I try building my army at 10,000 troops and then send them on their way. Once they shrink down to 4,000-5,000, due to attrition and battles, I start sending them to a province where I can refit them back to full strength. This seems to work well for me :)

If you are not in a hurry then send them only 1 province at at time and start movement that they reach the destination before the turn of the month. Movement attrition is only calculated on the turn of the month - so if you move step by step and start moving on the 1st you will (almost) never suffer movement attrition.
It´s useless if you have to move fast to get somewhere or if you have artillery in your army that slows it down or when crossing a river into mountains that slow the army... But in all other cases movement attrition is gone ^^

what an awesome cheat! I have to remember that and to try it. other than when performing a seige on a province, I have found cannon to be pretty useless. when is it good to have other than a seige? Also, I hate the way that artillery is the last to 'die' out of your army.

Artillery starts to become really powerful on the battlefield in the 1700s. By the middle of the century, its fire value is triple the equivalent infantry; its shock value lags behind infantry, but for someone with +1 general fire from the quality slider, artillery is a killer.

So, artillery is pretty awesome afterall!! I am in the 1700's, so I'll have to rework my strategy a bit :) So, outside of a siege, artillery is pretty cool. By the way, is it useful to use calvery in a siege?

If I'm not mistaken, only useful for it's numbers. You can't assault with cavalry.
