So once upon a time armour would give damage reduction rather than an ablative hull shield and there was a mechanic called "armour penetration" that negated a portion of that reduction on weapons.

I've noticed some mods still use this "armour penetration" modifier but armour damage reduction doesn't exist any more.

So what does it mean when mods give "armour penetration" modifiers? Is it a percentage bypass on all weapons or an increase in damage vs that health type?

Armor damage reduction still exists, but I think it's only really usable as you intend as an aura or environmental effect.

Armor penetration is like shield penetration, it makes your weapons do a % of their damage through armor/shields.

There's also an armor damage modifier, which increases the damage your weapons do to armor specifically by a %.
