Dragoons have awful defence though.

That why you have to look on them what they are doing. I use DragoonTank troops that comes on aid when other troops on the
battle, and they quiqly brake enemy troops. Speed is needed to get that
aid fast enough to place where it is needed.

That makes sense, but if they get caught up in a long battle they'll suffer huge losses. Still, if you use them for quick shock victories it should work well enough.

You have take risk's in a war, and especially when you are out numbered. In these case I use Local superiority, not only in numbers but also in quality.

Ps. In first time I use tanks, I got them annihilaited and I almost ban the
use of tanks for myself. This was with infantry not with dragoon's.

They do offer a +30 bonus to shock attack.

That's quite good. When tanks were first used, in Somme 1916, the Germans in the trenches got really scared and ran away from them. You know, you are there in a trench, it's raining shells, bullets and stuff and then, suddently, a huge metal machine comes toward you and your arms don't have any effect against it!  It's Death walking! (slowly, to be true).

So the shock bonus is great. But the tanks were used to pass by barbed wire too, and this, as I read somewhere in the forum, isn't working.

Ah, and afterward the generals discover how to direct artillery shells at the barrels. So, the use of them were pretty limited to break some trench lines, but in a supporting role.

To be more precise, the tanks could be vanquished with machineguns* and 20mm cannons. :)

Short of a 50 caliber machine gun I don't think the guns like the Maxim were capable of taking out a WW1 era tank. They didn't fire big rounds you know.

Yup the stat modifying part works, esp. for shock, but the anti - entrenchment bonus does not work. This is a really really bad thing since stormtrooper training + tank experiments + tank exploits would otherwise give you a 90 percent anti entrenchment. Until this is fixed you'll have the joyful experience of trying to punch through an enemy line with 120% entrenchment during the end of the game.

Chips off the inside of the armour and shrapnels up the crew.

Yep, due to the poor quality of metal back then, when comared to today. Metal shattered and was much more brittle to impact then the high tensile metals of today, or even of the WWII era. Bullets were the least of their problems though. Basic shock from travelling snapped parts in two.
