I think the 'recon support company' IS the armored cars. Armored cars where primarily (as I have understood it) used as recon during WW2 so it makes sense. Although it is unfortunate that they were bundled into 'support equipment', but I suppose they thought that there were enough many things to split the factories on and, since it is a company it doesn't include that many vehicle anyway. I found some info on the composition of a german recon battalion, including the actual armored car companies (the battalion includes some other elements too, but they all aren't doing the actual recon as I understand it), and the number of armored cars, here: http://www.bayonetstrength.150m.com/Reconnaissance/Aufklarungs/Motorizert/motorised_reconnaissance_battalion 1939 to 1940.htm

The webpage as a whole is actually filled with interesting number for almost all countries involved here is a link to the starting page: http://www.bayonetstrength.150m.com/
and for the different recon elements: http://www.bayonetstrength.150m.com/Reconnaissance/reconnaissance_unit_organisation 1939 to 1945.htm

Armoured cars were one of my favourite units in HoI3 :( They were a really cheap way to add armour and harden divisions (especially early on when it seems like the AI just doesnt build AT). The recon attachment doesnt provide any armour at all so doesnt really represent armoured cars in that way. (Do attachments even effect softness?)

Well I think that in HOI4 you can still do similar things by producing light tanks. Just a a light tank battalion or two to your inf division and you will get that bit of armour you desire :) or why not a battalion of heavy tank (tractor)? You get even more armour and it will have a speed that matches inf better. Just think of light tanks as an abstraction of all light armoured vehicles. Although I will admit that more variation is always better in my book. I would assume some attachments will give armour, but I guess we won't really know until release.

Also remember that customization in this game is a thing. I look forward to making heavily armored light tanks that go at about the same speed as inf, or slow heavy tanks with massive firepower. But again, we'll just have to see what the devs have in store for us.

As unfortunate as it might seem to you, I think you will like the new system better. In a year or two you will think of your armored cars addition as a primitive solution that can be much better abstracted in HOI4, or let's hope so at least!

Anyway I hope you can still enjoy the game, just take the changes to heart and make the best of them!

Oh, im almost certain I will like the new equipment system better - it seem excellent and is easily the thing im most looking forward too. However, I would like to see a greater degree of variety. They have provided it somewhat with the variants and the army experience upgrade thing but that doesnt seem as exciting as new units (albeit probably functionally identical).

Since i dont remember, have Paradox changed how armour works? I HoI 3 it was the maximum armour of any unit in a division was the armour value for the division but i remember hearing its averaged now. If it is the HoI 3 system then adding 1 platoon of armour to everything seems like a very cheap and potentially overpowered way of armouring up but if it isnt then I fear gimmicky pure armour divisions will appear. If anybody knows id appreciate having this cleared up.

I agree that more variety is better and armored cars as a vehicle to produce and deploy in companies or battalions would nice (more is more). I am sure though that there will be a mod for that :)

I think that Hard attack is ONLY used against Armor (Hard) defense/targets and Soft attack is only used against soft defense/targets. So a pure medium or heavy armored division will be devastating against a light armored mechanized division, but grind to a halt against soft Inf with good hard attack (AT weapons) since medium and heavy tanks have reduced (in the latter case, severely) soft attack (Turns out sabot rounds ain't the best against inf, who knew?). We will have to see after release how this really works, but I remember reading about this in one of the Dev diaries and/or hearing it in one of the streams. So depending on the enemy's composition, different combos will be required and good all around divisions will probably be the backbone of any successful army, with specialized divisions for special times/missions.

I imagine that you will probably be able to increase soft attack in tanks, but I would imagine there will be a price to that in terms of speed, reliability and hard attack (maybe not all of them but you get the point).

Im not referring to hard/soft attack since i presume thats the same as in HoI 3. IE, at 30% softness you take 30% of damage from soft attack and 70% of damage from hard attack etc.

Armour was related to piercing attack. A unit with 10 armour would take 50% damage and deal more org damage to units who had less than 10 piercing attack. If you had more than 10 piercing attack you didnt do more damage you simply didnt do less.

Both piercing attack and armour were based on the maximum value a division had. IE, and infantry division with 3 infantry brigades and 1 at brigade would take its piercing attack from the AT brigade. Equally, something with 1 armoured car in it would take its armour value from the AC.

EDIT: Never mind, having looked at the dev diary (early one, DD6, so could be wrong) it seems armour has been removed and what is now called armour is now what softness once was. Piercing is still in however so idk. Its a shame DD21 didnt really explain much beyond what recon is now.
