wasn't there someone who already posted this topic? I believe I saw it some time ago!

anyway, me and a friend of mine talked about the possibility to have armies stationed inside forts, to make them stronger. yes I know some of you might think: "WHAT!!! how will it be possible to lay siege to a fort that is protected by thousands of "extra" soldiers?!??!?!?!?!"

well...

if you do put an extra army inside a fort it shouldnt be able to stay there forever. if a city has a certain food production or food reserves (attrition value could be used here, right?) those would be consumed faster with extra troops inside. thus it would be more expensive for the defender to station those troops there. we thought this would be much more realistic since this did happen. if an army was beaten on the field it would retreat to the fort or city. when a city was running low on food this could result in loss of men, lower the morale, create revolt among the citizens etc.

the reason why an army should be able to stay inside a fort is to make the enemy think twice before they assult it. if the assult failes their morale will be shattered and the army inside could charge from the gates routing the enemy and breaking the siege.

Yup, there was a thread about it around 3-4 weeks ago IIRC. It was connected to having generals stationed in there too whose abilities might prolong the siege.

I like the idea of using a leader or more troops to prolong sieges - or even to dig out and surprise the enemy. They found some evidence of that happening in a castle in England last month I believe.

Like in the Total War series? That would also mean that if you're at war you will need to station troops in every province to avoid the capture of undefended castles.

It's a good idea tho, although I wouldn't mind if the system would stay the same.

well, no thats not what I mean. in the total war game you need soldiers in every city yes, but I ment that there should be a garrison there like there is in EUII but you should be able to station additional troops on top of them. the garrison should not be able to leave the fort like they can in total war.
