I'm not sure how to take this statement, especially from one of the grognard's of the community. Is this intentionally inflammatory, sarcastic, joking or in response to an entirely unrelated matter?

In order: Not really, no, not at all, and it's mostly combination and accumulation of four weeks of bu- . . . Taurian stool. I'm just simply tired of it, at this point, and this is not the time or place to discuss it further.

Holy mother of God you all are making a serious mountain out of a molehill. Christ on crutches could you have possibly picked a more unimportant, trivial, and easily work around able issue to have spent nearly fifteen pages of forum posts on? The fact you can rename your oh so special pilots to Katie teh Penguin of Doom is leaving such a bad taste in your mouth that you are dissuading people from buying a product? Let alone the fact around six pages back in the quagmire of bullshit a helpful former goer posted the JSON file showing exactly where the names are saved and offered a guide on how to change it fairly quickly after launch. Plus the armchair developer's and project managers laughable concepts of software development and man hours, like...damn guys. Damn.

It's really not that hard: if the game comes out and it's a blast to play, every over-the-top complaint made will seem silly and the complainers will play the game as if none of this ever happened. Then they'll start agitating for changes in the expansion.

I...As to the subject of this thread, I'm leaning more towards the "let cooler heads prevail", "wait and see", "trust HBS to deliver a high quality gaming experiance" and Care Bears in white armor contigent.
HBS does have a vested interest in delivering the best received BATTLETECH gaming experience possible... witness the Catapult K2. :)

As to Care Bears in White Armor... even when said Armor is singed, in time, most hold true to their nature. : )

Now, the JSON fix is fine for me - I'll be doing that right off the bat - but anyone who also wants to participate in PvP is screwed. Your opponent would have to have the exact same mods installed and I don't think people want to play the company that someone else made up or screw around with their JSON's just to play a PvP match.

In terms of visuals being important consider how much people will spend to get the skin they want - no game effect whatsoever. Some game companies have this as a major source of revenue and do well with it. It's important to lots of people, many of whom I'd like to buy this game. Customization and cosmetic control is a major selling point these days.

In short - for a modern game, customization is an important feature. Moreover, it's a promise broken.

After all, it still grates that in the above pic only "Casual PvP" survived Update 47's cancellations and delays.

I like Shadowdragon was not only keen on the customization for myself. But I also planned on GM'ing multiple gaming groups as the commander and the npc pilots. Roleplayers like to roleplay, they also like to create their own characters and use their own names. Battletech players are especially touchy about backgrounds of their pilots. You think I am gonna get a person who loves to play a Kurita background character to have to shoe horn them into a female davion noble npc?

I do not go to the great lengths Shadowdragon does but I really like to tinker. I had layed out flow charts using the print out for main character backgrounds so I could have some interesting characters as npcs. Names picked out, mech assignments. Etc. I planned on hiring new npcs mech pilots just so I could customize them and train them and have pilots that do lots of different things so I can have fun testing out different tactics and attempting to actually train up the most elite pilots in the periphery by keeping them alive and making them veterans.

But if I have to use stamped out generic pilots like what was in the backer beta then I have to pass. Bad call signs, horrible voice paks, horrible portraits, etc. Why would I care if red shirt mech warrior number one dies.

Note Kiva was having lots of fun with her custom named npc mech pilots less than a few weeks ago. It works for HBS but its not good enough for us? Seriously, how hard is it to let us rename the pilot, the callsign, choose a voice pak and pick a portrait. I am shocked nobody can do that coding in a single day since it already appears to be working right now.

Oh well it sucks, yep eating turds sucks. Especially when you paid for cake. But we're all out of cake!

The good man you are responding to is a decent enough example of remaining mostly optimistic, even if he isn't happy with certain changes. I felt . . . it was worth pointing out here, even if it's not on topic.

I think this thread is a great example of why so many game devs play their cards right up against their chest and never engage with the community.

Posts like this make me think that we not only need an Agree button, but need an Agree and Let me buy your next round button.

I would say you're wrong considering the willful boneheaded-ness going on 15 pages by a vocal minority acting like the entire game is ruined, just ruined!
I understand and appreciate your position. But one of the strengths of our HBS BATTLETECH forum has always been the chance to both celebrate as well as offer criticism (within CoC guidelines) at any point along this 2-plus year journey since the Kickstarter.

If it were all "celebration," with our forum voices only and ever agreeing with HBS and each other ~ Jordan, Mitch and Team HBS would have not found much value in our discussion and debate... because there wouldn't have been any. By championing both sides of so very many topics, our community has always offered up to HBS insights and an understanding how their Backers feel on a wide variety of topics.Something HBS has asked for on numerous occasions.

The game is not ruined, though criticism has been earned. Better to engage and discuss, acknowledging disappointment and frustration, than try to shout down and mischaractize it ALL as "boneheaded."

...maybe good Sir, you see what I am getting at?

I think this thread is a great example of why so many game devs play their cards right up against their chest and never engage with the community.
In this case, it wouldn't have made a difference, because the cut feature was something mentioned in the Kickstarter, so we would have found out sooner or later. If anything, I think it's better that people find out before the game is released than to have it suddenly sprung on them when their hype is at its zenith while booting up the game for the first time.
