At this point, I'm not recommending it to anyone. I'm now almost prepared to collect my code and never install it, never look back, and just move right on into something else. And it's not because of Harebrained Schemes or Paradox.
"Personable features" is a great way of putting it - not a necessary part of the game, but one of those things that just gives it more life and charm. Yeah, I can certainly understand that.I know this game will be fun for a while and I want that while to be as long as possible. Loss of personable features like this further reduces that period of time.
I wouldn't be surprised if we saw guides on character editing posted here within hours of the game's release. There's no way the modders are going to let that slip by.It's also been said that developers have said that the pilot files are modifiable, if that work around is true, some official confirmation (or better yet a how-to guide) would also be nice.

Our Modders have never failed to impress, so for that reason I hope each and everyone of them gets to enjoy exploring and experiencing the game for a few days after Launch."Personable features" is a great way of putting it - not a necessary part of the game, but one of those things that just gives it more life and charm.

We don't know what else they still need to get finished. They likely have assignments for all of their staff all the way through to release. If they finish other things early, they might have time to work on this, but it seems unlikely. Customization won't be as extensive as I was hoping for, but switching mechwarrior names won't change my game experience. I probably wasn't going to bother with customizing the appearances of the mechwarriors anyways.@ Havamal,
Actually Mitch did not say it needed a months worth of work. He said it needed the man hours of a month for a single person plus testing time. Now that could mean 40 hours per week times 4.5 weeks or roughly 180 hours of work needed plus testing. Now we do not know how that work is broken down. Can it only be done by a single person? Is it in many parts that can be done by many people at the same time? Plus we do not know when this game is going to actually ship. It could ship the last day of April and still fall within what has been promised for release date. Meaning there could still be more than a month left. So apparently more than enough time depending on how the actual work needed is broken down. It also appears even if it was only a single person in the entire HBS crew had to do the work it still could get completed and tested on time. But that is just me peeking thru a keyhole into a dark room making a WAG.

Most all of us will still be playing the game anyway. Where the loss of customization really hurts is replayability and time spent playing.
When I've thought about playing this game over the past couple years, most of those thoughts has gone into my lance. I know what names I want, I know what backstories I was going to use, I know what mech pairings I wanted. I even know what pilots got upgraded to what mechs as their skills increased/they got promoted. Losing this feature and instead being given generic pilots lessens the personal connection I feel to the game. Lessened personal connection = lessened motivation to replay after I've beaten the campaign = lessened time spent playing = lessened desire to buy DLC. I believe Kiva (but maybe it was another dev) once tweeted how upset we'd be when our pilot died. I can't really imagine getting upset over John Do #3's loss when John Do #4 gets out of sickbay next week.
I'd even planned a playthrough without losing any of my 4 main pilots (i'd have expendable ones for times the main 4 were injured) but I was going to restart the whole campaign if any of the main 4 died. That seems unlikely if I can't name the big 4 as they just won't mean much to me.
I know this game will be fun for a while and I want that while to be as long as possible. Loss of personable features like this further reduces that period of time. The loss of the PvP/multiplayer features hurt as once a player figures out the AI, inside and out, PvP is really the only challenge left. Lost features may not be much by themselves to some players but the losses are cumulative.
At this point, I'd really like some developer confirmation that this feature is HIGH on the priority list for post launch uncutting. It's also been said that developers have said that the pilot files are modifiable, if that work around is true, some official confirmation (or better yet a how-to guide) would also be nice.
But at some point for me it is more important to celebrate what BATTLETECH "is," rather than lament what BATTLETECH "is not." Difficult though that may be...
Well bargained and done, my friend. :bow:Someday I`d like to meet you on the battlefield.![]()

Totally agree, while I am not happy about missing features, to not recommnd something we haven't even had the chance to play yet is kinda extreme.I 100% agree. Also, despite my disappointment in this feature issue, I am still wholeheartedly recommending BattleTech to any of my friends who might have the slightest interest in big stompy robots whether from past BattleTech experiences or Not
That's all pretty convoluted IMHO.@ Havamal,
Actually Mitch did not say...
I guarantee they have assignments through release . It's a hellish time for any project. We don't know what else they still need to get finished. This is HBS's largest and most ambitious game. It seems they overestimated what they could get done in the first game. I still have no doubt that it will be an amazing game that I will spend days on.
