Okay, enough with the cruft and let's be blunt here. The topic actually makes sense to address. If you are into that sort of thing.

Incidentally, I have been considering this very question for a while; why do women generally not play Grand Strategy games? They play RTS games, they play RPG, they play FPS, hell, even arcade games, but I simply cannot seem to sway them to the Grand Strategy sector.

If I compare the group of my friends (people I consider my friends, at least) and divide them up per gender, the average of female gamers (or at the very least, women who play on a regular basis) outnumber the male gamers.

Studies have even showed that women outnumber men on the Internet (though, this would probably make sense, as 51% or more in the western world of the population are women).

I am not going to say no women plays Grand Strategy, as this thread simply proves; there are some. But then why is their number so much lower in this genre than other genres?

Now, I mean no sexist insult, but we know that male brains tend to focus more on logical and symbolic thinking, while female brains tend to focus more on emotional and linguistic thinking. The sexes are different, denying that is simply stupid, even our minds. So I wonder, could this basis of the function differ the preferences (in general, not in each case) of the genders as per games?

Maybe it simply boils down to the fact that fewer women know about Grand Strategy games? Meh, who knows? Only 8% of people at my institute are women anyway (I study computer science, by the way).

I guess it's a survey I'll never get through.

Your post was made without some sort of 'scientific reference'. I made it pretty clear that this is based on evidence. You can go read a paper on it, it'll be there.

Your post, on the other hand, was purely a lame joke with a sexist underlining that I heard oh too many times.

'Women can't think logically'. I mean, come on. Seriously, what's next? A knock knock joke?

English is not my native language, it's hard to be subtle in an other language. It was supposed to come out something like you said in that paragraph and in dutch it would. Again, I didn't wanted to offend anyone.

You guys have some weird ideas about women. Maybe it's a generational thing. But I know plenty of women who play games, including some who know far more about technical things than I do. Your stereotypes are silly and old-fashioned. :p

In history there weren't that many important women. I mean, women had to fight for certain rights until 1950.

I can't imagine there were many female advisors, although there are always exceptions. I would find it annoying to employ women as advisors simply because it doesn't feel realistic. It was the time of men.

My english isn't very good, I'm trying to say something I hope you guys understand what.

/facepalms

You fail at basic history.

I'd venture to say it's more about people in general not knowing about Grand Strategy games. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that as many as 8/10 gamers would have no idea what the term means. As for your scientific evidence, I'm skeptical. Who exactly did this research? What were the specifics? It sounds like nothing more than an age-old stereotype based on faulty reasoning and half-assed observation to me.

I just thought of something. Another reason could be because Women arent really in the game itself. The only women you ever actually notice in Eu3 are the rare queens.

I realize this was farther back in the thread, but I would like to comment on the fact that he has a good point. I also personally think that they implemented the women rulers in the game very badly. There military ability is rather useless because they cannot lead armies and that is the most useful part of the military ability. This is very ahistorical by the way, as there were plenty of Female generals. I have had several female rulers who have had a 7 in the military category and I believe one that had a 8 or 9. Do you know how badly I would have liked to put them at the head of my armies, as I usually have a shortage of good shock and in general good generals. Not to mention if a woman ruler wanted to go out and lead her armies in battle, who was going to stop them?

Or maybe it's just the way men and women are socialised. Boys play with guns and girls plays with dolls etc.

Some of the most celebrated rulers in history have been women. Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great, Victoria, etc. Cleopatra played some of the most powerful men of her time like little boys. Women have lead armies. Joan of Arc and Boudica, for example. The wife of President Woodrow Wilson is believed to have been making most of the decisions when he became ill late in his term.

Actually, it is what is called grey matter and white matter. Grey matter focuses on the emotional, linguistics and such, while white matter focuses on logics, symbolism and such.

Unfortunately, the distribution is not even. The total length of the white matter fibers, for instance, is 176,000 km in a male brain while that of a female is 149,000 km. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?cmd=retrieve&db=pubmed&list_uids=12794739&dopt=Abstract)

Or maybe it's just the way men and women are socialised. Boys play with guns and girls plays with dolls etc.

While environment indeed has something to do with upbringing, some studies have showed that boys and girls tend to be different even if brought up in the same manner. Alternatively, of course, it could be the way boys or girls observe the world (outside their own living room).

But hopefully you would agree that the list of males is way bigger. I said there were exceptions. If we would make a list of the most important historic events and who was the cause of it or who was responsable for it, I'm sure only 5% of them would be women.

I just cant imagine great armies, great nations and great events in the time that also Europa Universalis takes places, are caused by women. Even at the present time....

You know what, forget it. I have to learn english better before I can discuss something like this. I just can't translate the thoughts in my head to english.

I just think that in EUIII there is the occasional woman (like Queen Catalina, when I was Castille) and this feels realistic to me.

Than teach me. Don't just say I'm wrong, show me I'm wrong....

To add to Garak's list, there were many more rulers and leaders. Also, there were ordinary female soldiers in any major conflict of the EU period, conquistadors, crusaders, pirates, you name it. Not to mention non-westerners. I suggest checking out the site Women Warriors in History, I found it very interesting when I stumbled across it a while ago.

But hopefully you would agree that the list of males is way bigger. I said there were exceptions. If we would make a list of the most important historic events and who was the cause of it or who was responsable for it, I'm sure only 5% of them would be women.

lol, the OP question was, are there any women eu3 players..

Bottom point why women (in general) don't play these kind of games is that they're too preoccupied with their other womanly stuff already, such as shopping or walking around the mall all day long... They enjoy doing that and we enjoy doing this.:D

To comment about the actual thread subject too, I do wonder about it. For some reason, if I play something from my other favorite genres (90s-style adventure games in the classic Sierra/LucasArts mold, RPGs, action-RPGs and, when drunk with friends, virtual ice hockey or basketball), any female friend or girlfriend present will at least find it perfectly normal, some play them themselves, and some who don't still want to give it a try. If someone sees me playing a Paradox strategy, they look at me like I'm a freak and wonder how I don't bore myself to death. Then again, that's the reaction of some men too, so it's not really a gender thing, but I do have plenty of male friends and acquaintances who enjoy Paradox games and others who find the idea interesting. None female. I once talked about this with a couple of Paradox fan friends and they had the same kind of experiences.

There are some women on this forum. But they usually don't reveal themselves because of the slobbering hordes of dorks.

Of course, another reason why you may not see them is the fact then when they do pop up, there told that this game is a guys game and that they should go back to gossiping and whatnot.

When I read these comments early in the thread, I was seriously surprised. I figured this forum would be above that kind of crap. Looking at some of the comments here, turns out I was wrong. Sheesh.

Interesting point about women and grand strategy games. From personal experience, my wife had played computer games from the early Ultima series through games like "The Beast Within" and "The Pandora Directive" to "Morrowind" and "Oblivion", but EU3 just does not hold her interest. Currently she is relatively content with "Mount and Blade".
