is there any other games that are like this but the battles are a bigger aspect of the game?

Well the recently published Medieval 2 Total War is about the medieval times and battles, but diplomacy is... *cough* not the best *cough* (kill on sight policy after some time, no matter if you are in alliance with them or if they have some kind of CB, still DoW comes).
Knights of Honor is not bad either, though it won't start for me anymore.

*sigh* Im afraid that games like this are pretty hard to find. Just consider yourself lucky to have found Paradox
Hearts of Iron II places a bigger focus on combat. And it's by Paradox, so you won't be dissapointed.
Yes, get the Doomsday version and patch it. It's very good - the 1945 scenario is excellent; very difficult as the British, but very rewarding!

far too much war, not enough economy
the 1936 is better.
you may also want to try Victoria which is in between HOI and EU in respect of economy and war .
Have you played the same Vicky as the rest of us? Vicky has a very detailed economy, and a comparitively simplified military system.
I've been contemplating about this. I got HoI2 recently and I must say it can't really grab me. It's very easy to grasp, but it's all about war. I couldn't make it past year one. Got killed by boredomL'Afrique said:

If he is looking for something akin to Total War then frankly Vicky and HOI are absolutely not what he wants. Lest face it, EU2 is the most user friendly and simple game of the stable, and still it confuses people (including me at first).
The only country I play in 1945 is Spain, that's to declare war on Germany and grab as much stuff as possible before the Allies get in my way. 1936 is fun, but the peacetime is so boring for me. i find hoi 1 better for 'lite' hoi games
hoi2 too much effort.
vicky and eu2 best by far i believe.
