I've been looking through the resources I could find on the forums, but haven't found anything regarding editing the various political map modes. Does anyone know of any guides or posts with information on it?

Also a follow-up question, is it possible to change the height at which county names/kingdom names switch?

It is not possible to modify map modes directly, but what you can do is to add a custom map mode through a councillor action as a workaround.

I more meant things like changing the opacity of realm map modes. Editing how bright or dark realm or transparent colors appear on the map in different map modes. Is that not possible either?

In that case, there are mods on the workshop that make maps more transparent, so I would advice that you look at those.
