Are there any benefits to giving my ruler military command?

If you have a high MIL ruler and low army trad, and really need an edge in war, making your ruler/heir can be that edge. In the staggeringly vast number of cases though, a high MIL ruler is going to be more militarily useful generating mana for longer than risking death on the battlefield, so "make ruler a general" is basically a way to try and arrange an accidental firing squad while drilling.

According to the wiki, making your ruler a general gives a higher death chance and lower life expectancy, even if he's not assigned to an army. Apparently this higher chance starts 5 years after turning him into a general

This used to be true, but was recently fixed. It used to calculate death chances for the ruler and the ruler-general as two separate entities, hence why your ruler had a lower life expectancy if they were a general.

IIRC having a leader drilling an army also increases chances of death. So, even at low maintenance I usually have a 1 stack with my ruler attached to it drill.

Not sure how effective it is, but in theory it should triple the chance of death, no?
1 roll for being your monarch, 1 roll for being a general and 1 roll for drilling an army.

Only twice. The extra roll for being a general has been removed. Can't recall which it was, but I think it was either Leviathan or Origins.

Are we 100% sure about that? People who don't have ruler-generals assigned to an army at all still seem to have their elven rulers die way earlier than would normally be possible in Anbennar, which does not happen if you do not make them a general. Unless Anbennar explicitly blocked that update so people could still try to kill bad rulers this way? I could believe this is a mod-intended exception, but given long history of pdox patch vs game interaction weirdness I could also believe otherwise.

It could also be that in the code that "anchors" the general to the monarch, something trips up the mod and resets the monarch age checks to default - either way, I haven't noticed any shorter-lived monarchs since it was implemented either, unless I'm actively pursuing it by drilling or using them in war, so anecdotally, it seems to be working.

So should you just always make your ruler a general to see how good they are?
I'd say "yes", but I've done that in the past and have a bad tendency to lose track of which general is in which stack and accidentally commit my good rulers to sieges, so y'know. But there's no mechanical reason to not keep them on the roster.
