Are The JSON Files Editable To Change Starting Mechs?

Okay but can you put the kickstarter backers or ronin in this file? Or only regular MWs?

All you need to do is exchange the lines pilotstartersim etc for the corresponding ronin pilot.

But i wouldnt recommend that.
I did it and the ronins are.. well.. experienced. But mostly not in a way you want them to.
The fresh and clean starter can be skilled as you want them. You don‘t like their voices etc? Exchange the lines that define what voicesfiles are used in the pilots folder.

Wonder if there is a way to make your and yourt lances starter mech be totally random?

Yes, there is. You can program the contractfiles to choose the startermech randomly. Never tried that in the simgamestats, but its just copy and paste for the 4 mechbay mechs then.

I've tried to add kickstarter with custom portrait in simgameconstants but will crash trying to find "portraitPreset" for the pilot. Even editing the version manifest to change portraitpreset to custom portrait crashes the game, as if its hardcoded or I missed something.

yeah it seems you can't get the kickstarters in, just the ronin and regular pilots...unless anyone else kniws how?

When you change out starter pilots, how do you know which portrait to use? I can't seem to find anything in the pilots .json that tells you what portrait they use, or anywhere else. Would someone please point me in the right direction?

My solution to wanting to use kickstarter pilots was to turn the hiring rate up to .98 from .08 and bounce around a bit looking for the ones I wanted, couldnt figure a way to get them to start of with.

I was just going to use the ronins since the KBs wont work. Admitedly this might lead to the game being a bit too easy early on but after my first playthrough it already seemed that way.

Tried on this play through to change my starting mech to a centurion and replaced a couple of the starting mechs with a Kintaro, Commando, and an Urbie. I got my Centurion, but none of the others. Game runs without issue. Any idea what I may have done wrong?

Back tracked to the coronation day mission to try again, but no luck. Can't remember if I edited the lance before or after starting the tutorial so I'll try it with a fresh game.

I am not looking forward to slogging through that mission again. Seems like every time I do it the AI just goes all out for what's-his-face's Centurion.
