One thing which i haven't yet been able to understand from AAR is if national armies will be different from each other based on historical realism.
For example will Roman or Gaelic Horse Archer have different stats than Persian Mounted Archers,will Legionary be different from Macedonian, Greek or Celtic Infantry?
Will the playable nations have also different costs for type of soldiers, for example Parthia or Seleucid have cheaper Horse Archer than Roman and more expensive Heavy Infantry, to simulate national differences in their armies?

well just by looking on the homepage and seeing a graphical difference between units. I am almost 100% sure there will be a difference stats wise.

And about the cost. I think if you choose the right national Idea it will lower the cost.

From what I gathered from the AARs it seems like you can boost certain troop types with national ideas. I assume base stats will be the same and then the availability of resources and the choice of national ideas will differentiate the armies.

Yeah that bothers me as well. The weird thing is that while the units are from the Greek culture, the armies carry the Latin culture name of Cohorts. Isn't there an Eastern culture?

Yeah, that will really depress me if I see Celtic armies with Elephants or Horse Archers. I hope that certain Cultural groups don't have access to certain National Ideas that open up such recruitment.

But I'd like the game to be more flexible, too. If the Arverni take all of Spain and trade with the Carthaginians, who's to say they'd never devise a way of training elephants for war? Of course, this kind of thing can not be made very easy, or else the game is ruined.

But you will have to playi as Parthia to secure monopoly by conquering the African provinces. The AAR clearly shows that they have elephants, probably from the easternmost provinces. Of course Carthage could also conquer Parthia to secure the monopoly, but im being realistic here :p

This was already covered in one of the dev diaries, if I'm not mistaken.

You'll only be able to build elephant units in a province that has acces to elephants, either through trade routes you've set up or through domestic supply, ie the province's resource.

Same goes for

Heavy infantry -> Iron
Cavalry -> Horses
Ships & Archers -> Wood

The necessity of wood for archers kind of bothers me though. Ships require large amounts of high quality wood and other supplies, but as far as wood is concerned an archer regiment doesn't particularly require anything more than militia with short spears and wooden shields. Archery was also very widespread as the bow was a common hunting tool, but shipbuilding was a much rarer craft.

If you ask me, they should've dropped the wood requirement for archers and turn wood into "naval supplies" and make it a requirement for ships.

I doubt it depends on NI. For example in Parthian AAR we see beta taking "cataphracts" NI and it didn't give him any cataphracts - a new unit type, just a bonus to cavalry stats.

I saw on one screenshots Caesar with a legion that included Principes. At this time following thr Marian reforms there was no disctinctions between legionaries (hastati, princ., triari) Does the Marian reforms are included within the game?
