This tendency was decreased about two patches ago by Johan.

Really? Hmm, I might start making a few more then... so that would mean that other merchants would be as likely as your own monopolising merchants to be competed out, all other things being equal?

Man for man they should have equal chance, assuming same trade efficiency and so on, but if you have a monopoly you have more merchants there so you have a greater chance to be hit.
Exactly. Plus, what Johan said was, "Monopolist in a CoT will not be automatically targeted first anymore." That doesn't mean that the playing field is necessarily level. ;)

Moreover, countries that already have five merchants in a CoT that is monopolized by another country can only compete with the monopolist, since that's the only way for them to increase their share (by freeing the sixth slot).

The key is to be ahead in trade level, have the right manufacturies and the right settings. The only time it takes a bit of work is when you load up the game as all the AI countries send their marchants at the same time, but after a couple of months it is back to playing monopoly all the way to tha bank!

Yeah, this is why it is worth to finish sessions at stab +3. :D

I send my merchants in batches of 3. Oh, I fully acknowledge the 'empty slot' method is superior, but I get a little thrill out of pushing some merchant out of business and it saves a lot of searching for an open CoT.

Trading is DEFINITELY worth it, and the micromanaging isn't really so bad once you get used to it. In the latest betas and 1.09 the AI's a lot less likely to embargo you, so I blitz a CoT all at once, then just sit back and see where it resettles. Again, almost certainly not ideal, but I amuse easily and it works.

As a European trading early isn't recommended unless you're Venice or Genoa. Too many little minors, and your trading efficiency's too poor. Wait til the world stabilizes a little. By Trade-3 you should be ready to go.

The AI DOES merchant spam when you load the game, so don't be surprised to take some serious hits. That's okay - take your slots back.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Don't do many (if ANY) Trade Agreements nor Trade Embargos. It messes up your Trade efficiency, which affects how much money you get and how easy it is to knock you out of your slot.
