Hi, asking this because I almost lost my country due to my ally not moving his army to help even when he was one who called me to join HIS war.

I'm playing Poland on ironman normal diff, I already formed the Commonwealth so I'm pretty powerful but still at Eastern tech cos I always managed to keep up with my western neighbours.

I was allied with Great Britain and Austria, Norway was a ally of Britain and was attacked by Sweden (about same size as me). Britain declared defensive war on sweden and called me to join in.

I thought, hey why not, checked the war screen, our combined forces outnumbered Sweden 2 to 1. So I agreed.

I was joined by my vassels the Livornion league and Wallacia plus Norway, Bavaria, Aragon and of course great britain. Sweden was joined by Bohemia

Basically, I saw Sweden go after Bavaria so I thought to attack Sweden bordering my provinces as it was undefended.

I captured several provinces no prob, then I looked at Bavaria and Norway and realised they were fighting alone!. Great Britain had a large standing army just sitting on its coast, not moving at all. Checked Aragon, same, huge army standing on its beaches, not moving.

Norway was occupied completely and the Bavarian army was destroyed. So naturally they came after me.

I had eastern military tech lvl 19, Sweden had western tech lvl 20, my armies were completely destroyed even though I had roughly even numbers.

Half my provinces were sieged or occupied. The combined warscore for my side was -58%.

Tried sueing for peace multiple times all rejected even though I tried to give everything available in the tribute screen.

Norway, Bavaria, my vassals and I all had low war enthusiasm and high war exhausion. But Britain/Aragon still had high war enthusiasm and low war exhaustion cos they had not lifted a finger! And Britain was the war leader so they refused to make peace!

At this rate my entire country would be annexed, so I broke alliance with Britain, costing 2 stability and eventually and thankfully Sweden offered me a relatively cheap peace deal.

So, Aragon/Britain both did not send armies to help, both were seperated by water. Bug? Also when the war leader is unaffected by the war it won't make peace even if warscore is very low, another bug?

Any insight would be welcome thanks. Had to share cos I almost lost hours of effort lol.

Yes, the AI is still very bad at coordinating troop movements over water. If you ally England/GB, do it for their navy, nothing else.

But I think the AI is also hesitant to commit fully to wars its allies drag it into, especially if it has no skin in the game. That could be the reason you saw Aragon sitting on its hands.

Yeah Aragon I get as it was far away and quite small, but Britain was a great power and Norway was just across the straits...and its huge army just stood on the cliffs of dover...sigh.

Also the war leader mechanic needs tweaking I feel. Even if Britain is not affected by the war it should negotiate based on its allies situation/warscore and not just on its own situation.

Most likely the only things they're interested in are conceding defeat and money (maybe releasing some countries). But those are not worth enough warscore to peace out early since the length of war modifier will still be huge. You may or may not know this, but offering anything with a red thumbs down will automatically make them not accept your deal regardless of what else you're giving.

At this rate my entire country would be annexed, so I broke alliance with Britain, costing 2 stability and eventually and thankfully Sweden offered me a relatively cheap peace deal.
Eh... Why exactly did you break the alliance during the war? You can peace out seperately regardless, doesn't help your chances for them offering you a deal at all.

Anyway, I often do much the same when I'm the one playing the island nation, just accept all calls and maybe send a few ships over, but that's about it. It's not great sportsmanship, but Britain only cares about Britain :p

There are other nations??

I'm only familiar with the nations of Great Britain, and Soon To Be Dependency of Great Britain.

Now I see where the Americans get it from ...

Ah, I didn't realise the red thumbs down meant they would always reject.

I broke alliance because I kept getting rejected when I tried suing for peace while still allied (maybe due to the red thumbs conditions you mentioned) and I panicked lol, half my country had been occupied by then.

Anyway it worked and Sweden offered a peace deal soon after, phew.

Will not depend on island nations ever again :D
