But still I wonder what you guys think?? Is there any point in building them at all, or should naval nations like Japan focus all they have on building large Carrier fleet and dismiss BB's completely?
Hard to tell before release. BBs worked pretty well in HOI3 for fleet-in-being approaches and given proper support from land-based aircraft they could dominate a sea-zone even though they couldn't really go toe to toe against any carrier-force. BBs will tear a conventional landing-fleet to shreds though and I can imagine that given proper basing they'll be hell for enemy convoys.
The thing with CVs are that they still require escorts of various types which require a lot of techs that also benefit BBs making the CV a rich-mans weapon in HOI. The BBs can't match CVs when it comes to dominating the Pacific, Atlantic or other blue-water areas but for invasions and coastal warfare they still make big bangs for the bucks since they don't require separate techs (like CV techs and air variants).
I would say that if you're strong in research and IC and plan on blue-water warfare then CVs is the best approach while if you're strong in IC but need to focus the research in other areas and you mostly plan to stay out of the large open seas then BBs are the way to go.
I can imagine CVs having a hard time negotiating the new sea zones if the corresponding air-zone is contested by land-based aircraft (as it should) and thus BBs won't be at a complete disadvantage as long as you have land-based airpower to control the skies along the coastline where you plan on operating.
