Ambassador Draza

The little man looked at the Duke, and said, “My lord, the Despot of Serbia, is willing to enter into an agreement that would be written upon paper. As you may already know Serbia has joined the Union of St. Andrew. I am to offer you this document.” Ambassador Draza handed the Duke a piece of parchment stamped with the mark of the Despot of Serbia, and it read:

In the interest of peace and prosperity peoples must be willing to come together, and it has been far to long since both Serbia and the land of Montenegro (or Ragusa, I am under the impression Montenegro would be the proper name)have. We ask that you consider the following terms.

First, both nations agree to remain out of the politics of the other or any vassals it may obtain.

Next, both nations agree to remain at peace with one another unless one attacks the other, or a nation that it is allied with.

Finally, both nations would be willing to open up avenues of trade between each other, due to Serbia’s lacking of a port Montenegro would be willing to allow free passage from its ports without any form of tariff or taxation, and in return Serbia would remove all forms of tariffs between Montenegro and itself.

The Despot of Serbia is willing to agree to these terms, and requests a reply from the Duke of Montenegro (Ragusa).

We await your response.

Signed,
Djuradj of Serbia

The Duke's brother stands and replies.

"My good friend of Serbia, as you have heard in this court the Ottomans have attacked the Eastern Roman Empire. I can not give them loans but, I can give them my military support. However to do this I need Rigt of Passage. If this document included a complete Right of Passage regardless of situation in both our nations we would be honored to sign such an agreement. I warn you though, this situation is grave, and we must aid our Balkan brothers. So please let us clean this matter quickly so that we can defend against the Ottomans.

To my friend from the Eastern Roman Empire, I can not give you loans when I am willing to give you military support. Let me try to get RoP to your empire and if all else fails you will be granted your loans immediately."

Neither May Day
nor beech leaves
nor birdsong
nor gladioli
can please me,
worthy and joyous lady,
until I receive
a swift messenger
from your fair
self to tell me of
some new pleasure
and joy
that love brings me,
and I hurry
to you,
faithful lady;
and may the jealous one
fall stricken
before I must leave you.

-Raimbaut [de Vaqueiras (c.1150-1207)]

The Bells of Rome Ring for the Duke of Ragusa and His Bride

As he approaches, through the stacks of thorn bushes, and ivy he is the butterfly searching for his sweet nectar; the life blood that he so needs, that will fuel his body and soul. He feels the blades and twigs of the trees beat his hands, and the berries stain them with violets of a fallen sun set. As he pulls the brush from his face his eyes stumble to the gaze of his future wife. In the break of the forest she waits for his arms to hold her, and take her home. His blunt coat of protection has shielded his body to the punishment that his hands have taken. Eye to eye they both stop in their tracks, both hearts now beating in unison. He stumbles to his knees, feet away from his maiden. She watches his every movement, every bend of his armor, and twitch of nervousness and her mind parallels his nervousness in her. He goes to one knee and she immediately goes to embrace him.

Their marriage went better then anyone would have hoped. Truly in love they did not spend one minute away from each others sight. But the Duke is now troubled by news from his homeland of hard times. There are rumors spreading of the Muslim menace lurking in its shadows. Stefan's mind is constantly focused on his bride, but blurred by the haze of the winter threat in the east. His next after celebrating his wedding must be to return.

Anna holds her husbands hand, periodically looking over in overwhelming joy and pride. As she looks around te court at the delegates she sees the shroud of gloom wander on the face of Arete, the delegate from the Eastern Roman Empire. She calls him and slowly he straitens his old bones from his seat, and walks over to the thrones of the Duke and Duchess.

"My lady ask for my presence"
"Good Arete you have not seemed like yourself recently, and as I can understand your worries over the Ottoman invasion, do not fret for better times will come."
"Hope seems to waning my lady, maybe one as beautiful as yourself might be able to see hope, but as for myself all seems lost." He grimaces but stands firm.
"You are most kind, but you have friends in the Balkans, namely my husband is there nothing he can do." She looks over to her husband with a slight little smile, knowing that she has turned her husband?s hand.

The Duke almost stunned stops and finally smiles realizing the cunningness of his wife. He stands and walks to Arete placing his arm on his shoulder and begins to speak

"Arete take a lesson from my wife compromise is an amiable arrangement between husband and wife whereby they agree to let her have her own way. So I must agree with my wife that there is something that we can do. I will talk with my General and see what he thinks as well as with my brothers. As for now you and your people are most welcome in my land as well as your Royal court. If anyone in ERE looks from refuge let them seek it here in Ragusa for they will find shelter. Send this message to the Emperor Alexius Achaea and to the Ottomans for that matter."

Arete seemed to cheered up for a bit. He spoke,

Emperor shall accept that. He thanks you for making Ragusa a santucary for Romans. It seems that Ragusa and Aragon would have plenty of Romans coming for safety from Turks. He also thank you for the moral support and advise you to be ready to strike when the Turks are weak. Emperor also say, "Good luck, my friend. May God be with you!"

He fell silent then he grew gloomy again but not as bad as before for he is relieved that plenty of Romans will be alive for the day of liberation of Constantinople and restoration of Roman Empire.

A letter arrives from Castille,

Duke of Ragusa,

Unfortunately, although the terms of your treaty are acceptable, I feel it is not beneficial for Castille to be involved in this agreement at the present time, while this war is going on in the Balkans.

Please feel free to contact us once again after the war has ended.

A man escorted by a few guards enters the chamber. He is dressed in a rain cloak as he has passed through the storms. He removes his cloak and is revealed as a rather gloomy looking blonde man. He begins speaking in a rather dreamy tone.

Hello, I'm Leonardo Julian, brother of Andrea Julian whom is the current viceroy of Naples. I wish to represent Naples here in your court. I have heard that there are troublesome times in the Balkans in the face of a heathen invasion. We wish to support you morally in this war of religion. May God bless Ragusa!

A letter arrives.

“Infidel ruler of Ragusa,

Your war decleration is merely evidence of your own ignorance and fooliness. You have no right nor reason to interfere in the Sultanates rightfull quest to restore its honor. As we will be prepared to offer the other combatants of this conflict a just peace we will only reserve death and destruction for your own realm. You have doomed your own people...

Signed by

Yusuf al-Zahiri, Sultan of Egypt, Lord of Africa”

A large group of armed knights arrive in Ragusa, they are escorting a wagon filled with crates. When they arrive at the palace one of the men goes into the court to speak.

"Noble ruler of Ragusa.
My name is Gaston d Valot, Marques of Niort.
King Louis has send me to escort the money to your noble court, and he also said that I should stay here as ambassador from France, if you choose to accept me?

I have come from France with a load of money from King Louis with hopes of that it will help your noble war against the Turks, witch we hope that you will win.

So will you accept this loan of 100.000 ducats (1 eco) from France?"

A letter is delivered to the court of Ragusa, the seal of The Golden Horde graces the piece of paper which it is written upon.

Barbarous Ragusan,

A day of reckoning has arrived for your people. The Great Golden Khanate has awoken from it's slumber to invade The Balkans once more! Unfortunately for you The Egyptian Sultan signed an agreement with The Golden Horde many months ago stating that I would assist him in anyway during times of war if he so asked. He has asked and it will result in much bloodshed for your the people of Ragusa. Pray to your God as my men will not stop until a mountain of bones is erected inside your fair city!

Baraq Khan, Khan of The Golden Horde, Siberia, and Conqueror of Ragusa.

The Duke busy looking through papers, looks up at Leonardo Julian finally, who has been waiting patiently for a long time.

"I apologize good friend of Naples, a great many honorable words have been heard here of your brothers actions. I hope that we can come to sort of agreement...A possible mutual assistance agreement? Your thoughts."
