Welcome to the most Reino real de Portugal. It is currently led by Dom Affonso IV, Mestre de Avis. Come in, and be greeted as a friend of his majesty.
portugal.jpg

Dom Affonso IV de Reino real de Portugal. A great man of millitary, dignity, prestige, and economic and lesgislative powers. A man trully of his father's image. He has served as the Cheif of the Armed Forces. A trully magnificent statesman, and pious. He is the most famed person in Iberia for his deeds and success. A well talked and diplomatic man. Young and without a succesor, however a fiancée.

Princess Archduchess Isabella Avis de Oporto and une fiancée of Dom Affonso Avis IV. She is an outgoing and dignified woman. She is also very much liked, as her finace is. She is a great, intelligent and beautiful woman. All men envy Dom Affonso for having such a magnificent fiancée.

Late King, João Avis, father of Dom Affonso IV. He abdicated his throne due to many physical injuries and incapable of leading. He is currently with his lovely wife, where he plans to spend the rest of his old days with.

Late Queen, Philippa de Portugal. Mother of D. Affonso IV and wife of the late D. João. She is still alive, despite her very old age. In her day, she is also the Duchess of Lanchasire of England. Now she is very much absorbed into the Portuguese monarchy and culture. However like her husband she is very old...and who knows how much she will be able to endure...A respected woman, whom gave birth to five males and one female. She is currently spending the rest of her days with her abdicated husband at Castelo Sao Jorge in Lisboa.

Field Marshall Duke Andre Inacio de Bragança, leader of the Portuguese armed forces. A grand general. A stern personality and very militaristic family history. He belongs to the Casa de Inacio, however he remains loyalty to the King.
francesc.JPG

Brother of D. Affonso IV, Prince Archduke João de Algarve, is a son of the late King, João. He is a very rude, and malice person. He strongly dislikes confrontation and any person whom isn't Catholic. He hates Castille-Leon and Aragon. If it were up to him, all of this would be Portugal. However, despite this, he is very loyal to his father's wishes, and his elder brothers'. He pledges great loyalty to the Kingdom and to God. A good man, for his piety and his chiverlic values. He is the youngest of the family with the exception of his sister. He is a man of the Order of Christ. He regardless of his people inabilities, is a very highly respected and liked Prince.
1527prince.jpg

Sister of D. Affonso IV, Princess Maria is a very elegant and shy woman. She is very smart, and even assists in military discussions. However, she does not participate. She is very pious, but hates to travel outside Lisbona. She currently founded a voyage to the newly discovered Azores in the Atlantic. She is the youngest of late King, João's children. Her dream is to one day, visit the Pope.

Bother of D. Affonso IV, Prince Archduke Fernanado Avis de Tago is a nice man, however he isn't nearly as popular as his brothers. He is a great man of law and form. He supports his brother Henrique in his ambitions to reach Prestor John of Africa.

Bother of D. Affonso IV and hated Prince Gonçallo is a very angry and aggresive man. He lives in Lisbona and does as he pleases without any care nor respect for anything. He dosen't have any interest in woman, and hates his faith. He is under strict house arrest under his own family's constent vigil as he is a threat and annoyance to all. He is kept prissoner there, but in a "elegant" room. As he is royal blood, but he is clearly insane.

Finally, there is the most famous Prince Henrique but I shall talk about him later.

Portugal's History:

The Kingdom of Portugal emerged in the 12th century connected with the process concerning the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula. At the same time that all the territories occupied by the Moors were conquered southwards Portugal, originally a county and a part of one of the most ancient Christian kingdoms of the Peninsula - Leão - demanded its independence in 1143. Due to endless fights and negotiations D. Afonso I, first king of Portugal, was awarded by the pope (1179) with the papal bull manifestis probatum thus bringing stability. At the eyes of all the Christian world, that meant the birth of a new kingdom in a part of the world were the fight against the infidels would be reinforced by a backup force of attack (The Palestine and the Peninsula).
p51vol2.jpg

The concept of crusade and the believe that all peninsular kings descent from an ancient visigotic monarchy justified all the Southern process of conquest in the al-Andaluz. The support of the church was unquestionable - the crusaders (conquest of Lisbona and Silves) and the religious and military orders gave a big help to the birth of several kingdoms by their endless effort of conquest and settlement.

The peculiarity of the kingdom's formation lies in the various ways by the which the territory was occupied. To all the well known European feudal forms of occupation - by the nobility, by the clergy and the allotment, the council land is added. It is an autonomous form serveyed between the king or the nobel and a community of free men, it derives from an effort to populate deserted territories and it was carried out by kings and nobels during the conquest process. The word council is still used in the modern local administration.
The Arabic culture, which is clearly seen in several Portuguese cultural aspects, has been since the beginning denied, especially because of the religious contrast by which it is enveloped. However we must not forget the numerous quantity of words of Arabic influence existing in our vocabulary.
Portugal was an expert concerning the technological development of cartography and navigation and that enabled us in the 15th century of discoveries.

The inventions and the technical improvements have the most various roots, though Portugal's geographical position and its cultural cohesion were a step ahead to find new things. A nautical culture was being built.

The motivation to the great adventure was bottom line the food and workers scarcity. Social and economic reasons do not justify such deed. In that period it was important to fight the infidel and save souls. Foreign people (such as Italians or Catalonians, castilians, bascs, northern Europeans and muslins) also wanted to take part on the crusade enterprise but with their own interests. Above all, the discoveries enterprise was seen as a way of increasing the national patrimony and treasure.
In the beginning of the 15th century, due to the crisis felt through all Europe during the 14th century, Portugal was dealing with serious economical problems.
It was urgent to find new resources, spereead the Christian belief to new people and fulfil the desire to find/know new lands.

In that time the Infante D. Henrique, one of D. João I sons, took the responsibility to make these journeys and his name was Henrique the Navigator.

The islands in the Atlantic were found: Madeira (1418) ; Azores(1425)

Faith:
Portugal belongs to the one and only true faith, that of Catholicism. It remains loyal and solely dependent on the Pope and Lateran council of Cardinals. It denounces all other forms of "relgion." Portugal vows to spread and defend the word of Christ for all time.

There is but one Cardinal for Portugal and that is of his ememnance, Alvaro de Sagres. He is the representive at Roma for the Kingdom of Portugal and faith in the area. He carries the orders from the most Holy See and the Pope to Portugal. The Holy Roman Lateran

Castelo de São Jorge:
The Castelo de São Jorge (St. George's Castle), the name comes from the time of King Joao I ( late 14 century) Before it was known simply as Lisbon Castle.

It consist of the former citadel of Alcazar, twelve gateways (seven of which lead to the parish of Santa Cruz do Castelo), the battlements and wall of Barbeca (Barbican) and eighteen towers (eleven of which belong to the fortress, and one, Torre de Sao Lourenco, is linked to the battlements by a long stairway. If we go though Portao Sul (the south gate) which leads to Rua de Santa Cruz do Costelo, we enter the old Praca de Armas.

St. George-Patron Saint of Portugal:
St. George was born in Cappadocia, an ancient Roman Empire province located in modern east central Turkey. St. George's father was most probably a Syrian who was martyred for his Christian faith. On the death of his mother, St. George inherited the large family estate in Palestine. At the age of twenty George became a professional soldier in the Emperor Diocletian's Army. The young man's noble birth, loyalty, and unusual intellect brought St. George to the notice of the Emperor. In time St. George became a trusted member of the royal court and was promoted to the level of tribune in the army. He might have become a leading officer had not Diocletian (245 - 313 AD) started a persecution of the Christian community.

St. George refused to conduct war on his Christian brothers and would not honor the imperial edicts which outlawed the faith. Instead he quit his exalted positions, left his distinguished military career, and gave a way his massive estates to the poor. When the imperial edicts were officially posted in the eastern capitol of Nicomedia, St. George tore them down and demanded that the Emperor rescind his unjust persecution. For his defense of the true faith, St. George was tortured and condemned to death.

On the first day of his imprisonment St. George was stabbed with lances, but the spears broke like straws. The Lord would not allow his skin to be penetrated. Next he was tied to the ground and a crushing weight was placed upon his chest. When Diocletian returned on the following day. St. George was alive and proclaiming the protection of Jesus Christ. The Emperor next had the saint strapped to a wheel studded with knives and sword blades. Diocletian thought this would surely kill any man, but George lay perfectly still conversing with an angel. At the end of the day, totally unharmed, St. George was removed. For the next five days the glorious martyr suffered tortures beyond description. He was submerged in quicklime, had his limbs beaten, was forced to run in red-hot iron shoes, was scourged, and was made to drink two cups of poison, No matter what was done to him, St. George survived to praise the Lord. Many witnesses to these miracles concerted to Christianity.

On the seventh day of his imprisonment, Our Lord visited St. George in a dream. Jesus laid a golden crown on the martyr's head and told him to prepare for Paradise. On awaking, St. George called his servant. After recording his memoirs, St. George asked the servant to have his body taken to his beloved Palestine for burial.

On the eighth day St. George was again dragged before the Emperor and once again was asked to deny his faith. St. George refused. Instead he demonstrated his faith by exorcising devils from the statues which lined the Emperor's court. From the statue of Apollo, St. George drew out a demon who was forced to admit that he was a fallen angel. Then, of their own accord, all the statuary in the great room smashed to the floor. The Empress Alexandra, seeing the many miracles, converted to Christianity on the spot, as did her servants Isaac and Croates. Enraged, the Emperor had his wife and the servants immediately killed. St. George was thrown back into the dungeon, where he died two days later on April 23, 303 AD.

The tale of St. George and the dragon is more symbolic than historical. The legend that he saved a Libyan princess by killing a dragon arose in the 12th century. ''George and the Dragon'' may have arisen from the myth of Perseus who slew a sea monster near the site of George's supposed martyrdom. The Perseus myth has origins in traditional sixth century North African folktales.

The dragon, traditionally, was a symbol of evil passions and paganism. Though these beasts are often depicted as fire breathing monsters, they always dwelt in low wetlands, caves, or wells. When the evil passions were disturbed, the monster devoured mankind, usually in the guise of a drought or a dry windstorm. According to the folk tales a fierce dragon lived in a marshy lair outside of Selena, Libya. The great beast ravaged the countryside and could only be placated by regular sacrifices. Every day the villagers were forced to offer the dragon two sheep. When the animals no longer satisfied the monster, a human sacrifice was offered. The land's fairest young maidens were selected by means of a lottery. One day the King's own daughter was chosen to sate the beast's hunger.

St. George, so the folk tale goes, happened across the princess as she prepared for death. On hearing the maiden's story, St. George made the Sign of the Cross and went to do battle with the monster. Several powerful blows of George's broad sword rendered the beast helpless. St. George then led the dragon in chains to the heart of the village. The townspeople marveled at the saint's faith and the power of his God. All of the community accepted baptism and converted to the true faith. The grateful King promised half of his lands to the savior of the town, but St. George declined the offer of earthly rewards. Instead he told the monarch to do honor to the true Savior by safekeeping God's churches, honoring the clergy, and having pity on the poor.

Prince Henrique the Navigator!

henry.jpg

Prince Henrique is most famous person of the royal family next to his own father. He is a grand man, and is most famous for his school of navigation and cartography. He is a most pious man, and vows to make contact and an alliance with the lengendary Prestor John in Africa and then together destroy the Muslims in North Africa. Henrique is the second elest son of his father, and is a very smart child of God. He is in charge of all of Portugal's navy, and exploring expeditions. He is very highly acclamied for his invention of the famous Caravel in which designs remain a total secret.

He seldomly travels, and is not interested in marriage as he is also the acclaimed Govenor of the Ordem de Cristo! On top of this he is also the Duke of Sagres. He is currently working as always trying to get an expidition to find Prestor John in Africa...
ordem.gif

School of Navigation and Henrique's Fame:
Henrique was born in 1394 as one of the sons of the Portuguese D. João, founder of the Aviz dynasty. In 1415 he and his brothers lead the Portuguese army in the conquest of Ceuta, a Muslim stronghold in Morocco. There he learned about the riches of Africa. He started studying the geography, riches and trade of western Africa.
Prince Henrinque decided to try to give Portugal a share in these riches. Holding Ceuta did not work - it used to be one of the richest caravan cities, but that was lost once it had become christian. The only way would be to go around the Muslim territory, directly to the lands where the gold, silver, and many more products came from themselves.

Far more important was the wish to take part of the West-African trade. Another important goal was to find Prester John, a christian king that was rumoured to hold a large empire somewhere in Africa. If he would contact Prester John, perhaps together they could gain a decisive victory over the muslims. Prince Henrique was a crusader at least as much as a discoverer.

Henrique established himself in Sagres, on the southwestern tip of Europe, far away from the court in Lisbon. There he brought together several important cartographers and instrument-makers. New, more precise maps were created, sailors got lessons in navigatory techniques, and a new type of ship was developed, the caravel, that combined cargo capability, manoeuverability and seaworthiness, and thus was the ideal ship for exploring. Lagos, near Sagres, became a center for shipbuilding.

He started sending out ships southward along the African westcoast. However, none of his men dared to go beyond Cape Bojador, a tiny cape somewhat south of the Canaries. They were afraid that beyond Cape Bojador the sea was so undeep that even one league (almost 5 kilometres) out of the coast, the sea was only 1 fathom (2 metres deep), that the currents were so strong that no ship would ever return and that the sun would burn so hot that no life could survive on the land. From 1424 to this day Henrique sent out 15 expeditions, all of which did not dare to pass the Cape.

Then, in 1433, a squire called Gil Eannes made an attempt. He too was too afraid, however, and returned empty-handed. Finally Henrique's patience had run out, and he made Eannes swear to go south again, and this time not to return without having passed the infamous cape. This time Eannes succeeded into doing what so many before him failed to do. To avoid the shallows near the Cape, he sailed westward into the open sea, and when he turned east again, he found himself on the south side of the Cape. He found the country desolate, but not deprived of all living. Finally the barrier of fear had been broken.

Ordem de Cristo:
Welcome to Tomar where the grand Order of Christ resides and conducts business. Our Govenor is none other then Prince Henrique himself.
convento.jpg

In the time of the Crusades, two large international military orders were formed to protect Christian interests in the Holy Land - the Templars and the Hospitallers. At the same time, in the Iberian peninsula, military orders were founded to combat the saracen incursions which had begun in the eighth century.

The Templars were founded around 1118, and soon formed commanderies around Europe to support their efforts in the Holy Land. By 1190 they had a castle at Tomar in Portugal. They became a very powerful military, financial and political force over the next two hundred years. Their downfall began in 1307, when Philip of France ordered the arrest of all Templars in France.

King Dinis didn't believe the accusations made against the Templars, and when the Pope dissolved the Templars, he decided to form a new order, to which the Templar holdings would be given. The Order of Christ was founded in 1319. It is unclear whether many Templars continued in the new order. Some writers seem to think that the Templars just continued under a new name, whereas others think that the Order of Christ was a new formation.

The Headquarters of the order was eventually established at Tomar, which had been the Templar centre since the twelfth century. The Convento de Cristo at Tomar was extended throughout the Order's flowering in the age of discovery. It still exists, and is well worth a visit.

Prince Henrique the Navigator was born in 1394, the second son of King João of Portugal.

At the age of nineteen, Henry and his brothers convinced King João to launch a Crusade against Ceuta, a Muslim stronghold on the African side across from Gibraltar. Henrinque's avowed aim was to extend the Holy Faith of Jesus Christ and bring it to all souls who wish to find salvation. This aim throws some light on his vocation for crusade and exploration.

Soon after the success of the expedition against Ceuta, Henrinque was appointed Governor of the Order of Christ, beginning an association whereby the Order became involved in Henrinque's voyages of discovery around the coast of Africa.

The Atlantic islands - the Azores and Madeiras had probably been discovered earlier, but Henry colonised them. His main aim was however to explore, and specifically to go south beyond Cape Bojador, just south of the Canaries, whose reefs and difficult currents had presented a psychological stopping point for previous expeditions. For generations, Spanish sea-lore had asserted that the coast of Africa was unnavigable past this point, and it took Henrinque 15 expeditions between 1424 and 1434 before one passed beyond the Cape.

A man walks in wearing the style of Scotland, he bows before the King and speaks:

"Greetings great King of Portugal, I am John MacDougal. I have been sent by his majesty King James I of Scotland to your fine court to serve as his ambassador. I pray that I am accepted for my king wishes nothing but friendship to your fine nation and for that reason opens his court and arms to your nation in friendship. We wish that you will send an ambassador to our fine nation. My King also wishes to strenghthen the bonds between our two nations perhaps through a marriage of some sort. While my Queen has only recently been blessed with carrying the heir to the throne of Scotland my fine king has many sisters who would be a fine match for a child of you and your Queen. My King also sends fine Scottish wool, and Scotch whiskey for your enjoyment. We would also like to hear of your explorations of the African coast, and the new technology that you are using to push your ships farther and farther away from Iberia in exploration of the world. I await your response of great King."

With that Ambassador MacDougal bows again and waits for the King's response.

A letter from Burgundy...

"His royal highness Dom João, Mestre de Avis,

I send you greetings from the duchy of Bourgogne. We are glad to see that Portugal has woke from a diplomatic slumber that seems to have affected her for a year or two and hope we will hear more of you in Iberian political affairs.

On a sidenote, I should mention that though we are building more and more bridges with the Federation, we are not part of said-Federation. We remain, however, very good friends of Portugal.

Sincerely yours, in God,
Marie de Berry, duchesse de Bourgogne."

The King rises from his throne and speaks to John MacDougal:

Good servent of James, I shall be honored to accept you here. It was a misunderstanding among our nations. Please let us put this war aside and work on repairs. I accept your fine wool and whiskey. I shall summon my son in here on prompt. <he summons his son Prince Fernando and whispers in his ear something and continues>He has agreed to go to Scotland. I hope that we may arrange something.

The King sits back and dismisses the ambassador and son with a smile. He then invites a friendly guard to take a drink with him.

(ambassador Mystia Arbelia enters the court)

(bows deeply)

Your highness, Venice sends its greetings for your court is a marvel to behold. Truely one of the greatest courts in all of the world. Venice admires your great wealth and ability of the sea. It is my hope your grace that Portugal will become closer to Venice. Venice is torn by war yet stands strong to the last man in defence of peace and prosperity against the Mongol Hordes and their traiterous allies.

I hope that your kingdom will invest in the righteous crusade by which Venice and her allies weild against the heathen and oppressors of prosperity. I look forward to speaking with you further.

(bows and waits to be dismissed)

The King rises and walks with the aid of a cane towards the bowing envoy from Venice. He orders him to rise and to look upon him. He says:

Mystia Arbelia of Venetia. You are most welcomed here. Although we have had differences in the past why with trade in the East, we are united with God as one. We shall give you our moral support now, perhaps in the future we may send some coin, however as of now, Portugal is not looking forward to commitment in other conflicts. Yet you are doing it for Christ, and we may be able to come closser with this. Please, remain here, and keep me up to date on what God has in store for the future of Venetia.

The King nods his head in comfort, and walks back again with the aid of his cane, to take his seat upon his throne.

When the ship arrives at Lisboa, the Princess hops off furiously and quickly rushes to the Court where her father sits addressing the Venetian. She storms in and she looks to him as if he was a demon, and then she storms into her quarters with Fernando and talks with him.

The King a little embarrashed and very confused simply gets up, looks at the court, starts to speak, but dosen't, then he sits back down, holding his beard think What did I do?. He then motions his wife to please go up and talk with his daughter. After the Queen departs to comfort her daughter, he rises to the Scottish man and says.

John MacDougal, it has come to my sudden attention and confusion that something went wrong in Edinburgh, and I can probably guess why. I formally apologize for this insult, as I have forgotten the duties of a female of noble blood. In response, and showing of my apology, I shall send my much more calm and Scottish friendly son, Fernando whom shall wed one of your King's sisters to help improve our friendship.

He motions for his son to enter, and as Fernando enters, he bows before his father, and listens to his father as his father wispers to him what he is to do, then Fernando salutes and bows before his father. Fernando then exists Lisboa and departs for Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the King sits back in his seat and sighs thinking That girl...I better go see what is wrong with her this time myself, I can only guess hmmm...... Then the King walks softly with his cane and a few guards leaving his Cheif Advisor in charge until he gets back.

As the King enters his daughter's room, she is sitting there being held by her mother and Fernando is simply sitting beside her. The King walks closer and nudges Fernando over, and holds his daughter:

King: My dear, what is wrong? What happened?

Princess: Oh it was awful father, they wanted me to stay there!

King: Don't worry my sweet flower, you are here with me now...

Queen: It is okay my love, she is just a little surprised and frightened by all this...

King: My dear, you know, I am always here for you right?

Princess: You father, I love you...I don't ever want to leave you.

King: Now now, I will not be around forever my angel. You must wed, you know that.

Princess: .........I know................but.......I...........

Queen:..........it is okay dear, I know it is hard to find the one you love, and of noble blood....

Fernando: My good friends, I shall be here ever watching the Princess, protecting her, as she is a true friend of mine.

King: Thanks Fernando, but we have the guards to do such things.

Queen:.......

Princess: Oh Fernando you are so skinny and boney haha!

King:.......

Fernando: Hey, I got the strength of a thousand men!

Princess: haha!

King: Now see, there, you always have friends, please rest darling, I must attend to political <sigh> matters as usual.

Queen: Good night darling <kiss>.

Princess: Thank you everyone. <smile>

Fernando: Don't worry Maria, I shall watch out for any threats at your doorway.

Princess: Haha!Okay Fernando, my knight hahaha!

Meanwhile, back at Sagres to the far tip of Algarve Prince Henrique the Navigator, Duke of Sagres, and Govenor of Ordem de Christo walks into his school of ambitious sailors and cartographers.

Now we shall discuss our routes of passage through the Cape once more. It is said by the Castillians that this is impassible, however, they are idiots of the highest caliber as we all know it. <he pauses for a moment as all the class chuckles along with him>

Now, we have gotten as far as that Cape but is anyone brave enough to go past such? Will these silly rumors and legends that have no truth keep us from reaching Prestor John and uniting to destroy the Muslims in Africa? Do you not wish to spread the word of God? Now after you answer these questions I shall conduct navigational business with you all. <he pauses to let them think>

Now then, shall we move along?Good. Let us go to the shipyard then shall we? <they walk outside to the shipyard at Sagres> Now, we shall learn about Caravels and how we manange them first, then we shall learn how to navigate them around the Cape, next we map the areas for future voyages, and finally we set sail for God!

Prince Henrique continues his lectures for hours and hours...

A large man enters the court. He is dressed in the rarely seen uniform of the French royal navy. A few other sailors come behind him.

"Greetings your majesty,

I am Rear Admiral Alexandre Lebrun of the French Royal Navy. My position was removed when the navy was downsized due to military costs. So, me and my crew woud like to embark with Henry to Africa. All of my crew are experienced with many years of sailing, navigation and hand to hand combat should it become necessary. With your permission, we shall compliment your crew."

Alexandre then awaits the King's response.

Prince Henrique stands before the French and the Albanians.

Ahh I assume you are all Catholic right? You are most welcomed here at Sagres, and we thank you for responding successfully to our cause. As you may have known, we are here to seek Prestor John of Africa and to spread the word of God. Also, we have here, ships that you haven't seen before. If you will, we shall teach you how to manuever these new Ocean Faring vessels.

I also thank the Albanians as though we had not known their interests in Africa, we are sure that they will help us and thankful. However, all findings and claims are to Portugal no other state. Understood? This is not a quest for fortune, however we may be expecting it. This is a quest in the name of God to increase our standings with God and Christ in heaven. This is a voyage to reach the Prestor John of Africa to aid him in destroying the heathens.

Now, please, come in, and enjoy our Ordem de Christo's hospitality, fine wine, beef, and chicken.

Prince Henrique motions the men into the dining hall to feast.

Sailing ship from far Baltic arrives at the harbor. After refreshment capitan goes straight to Prince Henrique's quaters.

tn_10goldsm_explorer.jpg

"Your Grace,

I am Wojciech von Klenau-Kaminski cousin of the Pommern regent - Joachim of the Greif. I have heard your call for skilled and brave mariners and here I am.

I was dreaming about sea since I was a child unfortunately Baltic is a rather calm and closed one. Most of our navy are galleys and we have few sailing ships. However, I was always sailing such vessels. I was sailing to Bremen, London, Lisbona... and I still want to sail further. I was a dreamer like you, please accept me in your fine school."
