A familiar face within the Danish court, that of Wolfgang Cronberg appears once more after a long absence following the death of King Walter of Latvia and the eventual isolationism under his son, King Amory. But at last, the old Latvian ambassador returns.

"Your Majesty, I am Wolfgang Cronberg, I have come on behalf of His Majesty, Amory I von Stadion, King of Latvia. I am to be his voice in Kobenhavn, as I was for his father before him.

He bids me tell you that your most noble ambassador to his court has been accepted and given quarters befitting his rank."

With that, he bows and takes a step back, awaiting a reply.

An imposing and well built man enters into the court and speaks:

" I am Count Helmuth von Berg the Cheif of the Duke's body guards, i have been escorting Duke Christoph von Hagen from Hannover. I am here to ask for audience as soon as possible for the Duke. It has been a long trip and he is feeling rather irritable due to the promptness of this event. "

The Count bows elegantly and withdraws from the room leaving a subordinate in the room.

Erik, who had never experienced such a hassle as ruling, looked over his court.

Count von Berg,
Your Duke may present himself in the Danish Royal Court. I am merely a regent, such an audience is not requested; but automatically given with me.

Herr Cronberg,
Your presence in the Court of Denmark is appreciated greatly. There are several important matters of which we must see to.

An official letter comes to the court of Copenhaga.

Regent of Denmark

The Florentine Agreement is dead. It was an unefficient approach of the former duke and so, it had to go. My intentions are far from the peaceful ways of my father.

You requested a loan. My merchants inform me that your court was always friendly with our representatives, so I can't see any reason of denying you this help. You might need it in your scandinavian affairs and, perhaps, one day, we, too, will need some kind of an assistance. Very well, you will receive it.

Signed,
Lorenzo de Medici, Duke of Tuscany, Protector of Florence and Pisa

A noblemen arrives in the Danish court, and seeks admittance.

"I am Jürgen von Katrinehaven, sent here to represent Bremen in the Danish court, if I am accepted as such.

Furthermore, I have received instruction from duke Johann III of Bremen to propose the following treaty:"

After having said that, Jürgen von Katrinehaven presents a document;

Bremer-Danish guarentee of peace.

1- Bremen and Denmark recognises the existing borders between the two nations.

2- The line of von Schallenberg is hereby recognised by the duke of Bremen as the only legal rulers of the kingdom of Denmark.

3- The house Küster is hereby recognised by Denmark as the only legal rulers of the duchy of Bremen.

4- As a sign of both parties desire for peace in the north, the duchy of Bremen and the kingdom of Denmark swears before God not to enter a state of war for at least 5 years, to be prolonged after this period in 5-years periods upon signing of new treaties.

Inflation warning

NNO-423.jpg

The spending habits of the country are escalating. It is borrowing large sums of coin to fund their respective rulers’ extravagant policies. The rulers are bringing more and more finances into a fragile economy and the leading merchants are warning the court that if this trend continues, great devaluation of the funds might ensue.

No effect. (Warning only).

After some time of waiting and preperations, Kaleb al Mushin explain his case for the Danish King.

"Most Noble Ruler of the Danes,

As stated through my earlier letter, my reson to be here is to awake the thought of establishing of new and prosperus trade routs. If we are able to connect enough participant into this new trade route, we would be able to direct trade from the Baltic Sea region and via the lands of the rus, down the river of Volga and finaly out in the Black Sea where goods could be transported to the far eastern lands. Would such a thing interest the Danes?"

Duke Christoph von Hohagen enters into the court. He walks over to Regent Erik von Frandsen. The regent hands the Duke some the Treaty and he proceeds to look it over. After a few minutes of silence and a small exchange of consulting with his followers, he gets a quill from one of his aides and proceeds to sign the document

x Christoph von Hohagen
Duke of Hannover

All of this proceeds without one word between the two rulers. The Duke steps back a few feet and waits for the Regent to comment.

Regent von Frandsen spoke with the duke, then Kaleb al Mushin, then to the Bremer envoy.

Your Grace,
I am greatly pleased with your willingness to bring a balance of power to Northern Europe and encourage peaceful relations between nations large and small.

Herr al Mushin,
I am very interested in such a deal. Perhaps we could agree to an arrangement in which Mameluk traders are able to build offices and storehouses at Kronberg.

Herr von Katrinehaven,
I would be interested in signing such a treaty, however I am not happy with the current borders between Bremen and Denmark. I grow irritated with your duke's lack of willingness to peacefully restore Denmark to her rightful borders. Though, I am beginning to see the true value of the province of Skane to Bremen, perhaps something could be arranged in which Bremen was given Danish support to gain or even seize another province along the Baltic of equal value to Skane. Am I wrong in saying your duke would find this most pleasing?

A letter arrives in Denmark from Pskov

"To the powers that preside in such a sad time,

I, Grand Prince Pavyel Polotovski, would like to extend my most sincere regrets at the illness of King Frederik. Equal and surpassing my regret, is my hope in his speedy recovery. I also wish to address that I hope the regent ruling in his place understands the incredible responsibility on his shoulders. Dramatically increasing Denmark's national debt, thereby greatly increasing the burden on Denmark's loyal taxpayers to pay for the resulting interest, is a very unprecedented way to rule a country in the King's place. I do hope that the King Frederik when he recovers is much more understanding of the purpose of these odd proceedings than I. Once again, my dearest regards.

Signed in Pskov,
Grand Prince Pavyel Polotovski"

Jürgen von Katrinehaven answered the Danish regent.

"Good sir, Bremen has no intentions of opening any kind of agression in the Baltic area or anywhere else.
I have the mandate to say, that should Denmark be in possesion of a province with a harbour to the Baltic, then said province and Skåne could exchange owners. Furthermore, the Bremer ownership of Skåne was accepted by the widow of the late king Christoffer, and as she sealed with the Danish royal seal, we are of the impression that said ceading of Danish territority was aceptable to the Danish crown.

Actually, Bremen would face a ahort-term decline in revenues, should we exchange the province of Skåne with any other, as Bremer laws would have to be implemented, as Bremer nobles would be appointed etc. This we are willing to accept, since ownership of Skåne seems to be of so great importance to Denmark."

Duke Otto II arrives in his well-appointed but not overly garish carriage. With him are all the servants and "essential" belongings that could reasonably be rounded up on short notice. They form a short procession through the winding streets of Copenhagen, on their way to the King's Palace...

Erik was rather tired. He gazed at the Pskovoye letter for a bit, then put it aside.

Erik let out a deep sigh before responding to the Bremer envoy

Herr von Katrinehaven,
Apparently you do not understand that we want control over this province despite what the local rulers think. I, however, am a just regent and am giving you the opportunity to perhaps request something in exchange for it. Has your last remark been a refusal of compensation!? Cooperation is the only way for this to be peacefully resolved, Herr von Katrinehaven. Please tell me if that's not what you want.

The Bremer envoy responded, then he waved off his court and proceeded to his study. He began writing a response to the Russian letter, but fell asleep at his desk.
