Horst Töllnich rises, and when he speaks, grief is evident in his voice.

"Your excellencies, brothers in Christ. How can you let politics guide your choice in this, the most important decession any man of the church has ever made?
And even then, you allow lies to influence you. I am in no way a friend of Johann III, I am not a servant of Bremen, I am a servant of God and God only.
I see this case is lost, but I do request of the future Pontiff that he follows my advice and places an excommunication over the head of Johann III of Bremen."

Cardinal Bouqué of Luxembourg enters the room, bows to the assembled clergy, and after speaking some words with the english, turns to cast his vote.

"After a thinking long and hard about who luxembourg wants to see on the papal throne, I have come down to the candidates from Portugal and England. And while the candidate from Portugal is a wise man, I think that the past has shown that the english delegate is a most wise and experienced man, and I deem him more than fit to rule the church once again. I am sure he has studied the past wisely and long, and that he will lead the church to greatness, and I think he is the man who will save our faith from the muslim hordes that are now even preparing themselves to attack Venice!

Therefore, I cast the votes of Luxembourg and Hungary on Kirk Picard of England."

One tall young mediterranean man enters the room:

I'm Roger de Flour Cardinal-Archbishop of Zaragoza, my friend Alfons d'Borja will come later as he had to prepare some notes for the King.
I as Cardinal-Archbishop of Zaragoza will cast my vote for Kirk Picard, Archbishop of Canterbury, althought I first I was not sure, God told me this nisght this would be the best option.

Some hours later, Alfons d'Borja enters the hall:

Brothers, I'm sorry to be late, I have some important work to do for King Alfons.
Watching the candidates we can see some known faces and some new, and by the moment seems that my borther and friend Kirk Picard is leading the elections for second time in the last 16 years. We'd remember Kirk was already Pope once as Jean Luke I, when he was a Navarran Arch-Bishop, but the unity of the church brake, when Cardinal Olbrecht of Bohemia corwned himself as Martinus V and true Pope, because some of Picard's policies were strange for a Catholic Leader, then Martinus V was assasinated and our former Pope Josef I was elected.
Althought all this things I have said I will cast my vote to Kirk Picard Arch-bishop of Canterbury as I hope He has learnt from his previous time as Pope and will be better this time, also hope Catholic Faith wouldn't break as last timeand a war nearly finish with Papal Lands.

Horst listens as the cardinals cast their votes, sitting with his head in his hands.
He is heard praying softly, and after Alfons d'Borja has cast his vote, he goes and talks to Kirk Picard.

"Brother in Christ, I wish to congratulate you, since it seems you have soon won this election.
Know that you face many problems in the times to come, and that the heathens in the east, threathening as they might seem, are not the largest threath.
The moslems we know, we know where they are and what they want. However, this holy church harbors snakes by her bossom, and I wish to bring your attention to two matters. One I became aware of only days ago, the other I have known about for years.
The first is the worst, because it is about threachery and Godlessnes witghin this very institution.
I received a letter from the Primate of Sclavia, and the man wanted to sell his votes"

The last is yelled out, so every cardinal in the room by now surely notices the conversation.
"The primate promised me his support, at a time where the will of this Holy Gathering was not yet clear, and in return he asked that I named his king heir to the ducal throne of Bremen.
Do you understand what I am saying? The Primate of Sclavia was willing to sell his vote, the vote that should, as all votes cast here, be the instrument through which God made his will known to us.

The second matter is a heresy that has been in existence since 1362, when the merchants of Bremen overthrow the archbishops there.
I do not know how the primate of Sclavia shall be dealt with, I recommand that he is at least removed from the office he has proven himself uneworthy to hold, but I do know what God intends us to do in Bremen.
Both will be issues to deal woth for the new Pontiff, most likely you, and both need swift action."

And so, with the new Pope having been almost unanimously elected, the Cardinal Archbishops of Europe file out of the chamber. The sense of mutual relief is almost palpable in the Lateran that the successor to Joseph has been found so quickly. The unspoken gratitude for this good fortune is so profound, in fact, that no-one even thinks to mention the peculiarity of a man taking the Papal Throne twice in his lifetime...
