The two empires of Trabizond and Constantinople have merged!
____________________

Constantinople has diplo-annexed Trabizond.

David, it is vital that you play a fully active role as co-emperor of the new biumvirate, or the parliament of Trabizond will dissolve the merger; Trabizond will become NPC and Constantinople will suffer further instability.

The current Court of Trabizond will be closed, pending merger into The Vault. Both Emporers please continue to use The Imperial Court of Constantinople as the basis for the biumvirate.

Cardinal Odo raises his head slightly:

"Most Holy Father, with your permission, I would like to make suggestion for your consideration. The sheer number of unresolved issues and troubling concerns seems to the shaking the foundations of the Christendom. I propose these matters were referred to the supreme and ultimate authority of the Holy Mother Church, namely that of the Holy Concille."

The two empires of Trabizond and Constantinople have merged!
____________________

Constantinople has diplo-annexed Trabizond.

The instability caused by the merger of the two empires into a biumvirate has caused Constatntinople to suffer -1 to tech for 2 years/8 turns/until July/Sept 1421.

Trebizond's loan commitment has evaporated due to the merger. This has caused Constantinople's teetering economy to collapse into inflation for 2 years/8 turns/until July/Sept 1421. during this time, it will cost Constantinople 2 econ to perform any act that would cost any other nation 1 econ to perform.

The merger has given the two warring nations a great boost to morale. Constantinople gains +1 to morale for 2 years/8 turns/until July/Sept 1421.

Yan, it is vital that David Comnenus plays a fully active role as co-emperor of the new biumvirate, or the parliament of Trabizond will dissolve the merger; Trabizond will become NPC and Constantinople will suffer further instability.

The current Court of Trabizond will be closed, pending merger into The Vault. Both Emporers please continue to use this thread as the basis for the biumvirate. Yan, if you want the title of the thread altered to take into account the diplo-annexation, please contact me by PM.

To the Roman Preceptor of the Knights of St. John,

We fear, Your Pious Lordship, that you are most mistaken with regards to any monies which the Republic of St. Mark has received from Rome. You used such heinous terminology in your address to us as 'stolen'. That which is freely given cannot have been stolen. You see the deplorable state of the poor in Rome, m'lord, but we see Christendom infinitely poorer in the East. Those in Rome, blessed as they are to live beneath the safe aegis of Christendom, have merely to contend with hunger. Christians in the lands of the heathen, however, must daily fear for their lives from Turkish raiders, Byzantine traitors, and the struggles of converting the most obstinate people under the sun. Add these to your troubles, Lord Preceptor, and then there shall be room for charity. Christ commanded that we sate the needs first where they are greatest. You are fighting hunger and starvation, m'lord, and those are no small tasks. We, however, are waging a Crusade.

With Christian friendship and affection,

Il Serenissimo, Francesco Foscari
Doge of Venice

A letter from the Preceptor of Italy, Peter de Monte, from the Grand Priory at Rome.

"To his most noble highness Francesco Foscari, Doge of Venice, greetings.

You speak condescendingly of me, and quite incorrectly. I am a crusader, you are not. I wear the Cross of St. John every day, you do not. To call your actions those of a crusader is most intolerable. But I digress.

Tell the poor of Rome that their deaths are justified by your actions, for I cannot. I do not deny that Christians everywhere must be protected, but you must not allow your zeal to protect in one place cause you to harm those in others. My Order was founded to protect those Christians living in the East, but you will find that we do conduct the majority of our work in the West, for there are even more needy christians there than in the East.

All this would be the case if the monies went directly to the Christians of the East. But they go instead to paying your troops more and recruiting mercenaries to protect not the Christians of the East but the venetian trade routes with the infidel. That is why your actions are intolerable."

A letter from Aragon arrives at the court

"Sir, we have learnt that one of your couriers was attacked by bandits when crossing the Pyrinees. The man was able to escape with his life, however, all the gold and the contents of the embassy that he carried are lost to the brigands. We hope that it was not a matter of extreme importance, and should it were, we pray to you that you resend it at once.

On behalf of his majesty,

Pere Arquillué i Manisses, secretary of the Royal Chancellery"

A letter arrives for the Archbishop of Besancon from the Preceptor of Provence, Guerin de Montaque.

"Noble Archbishop, Cardinal, Count, and Metropolitan, greetings and peace with you.

I apologise for reading your message, though it was not addressed to me. The order always welcomes pious men who wish to become Knights, though a pious heart is not the only requirement. If this man is indeed both desirous of devoting his life to the service of the Order and of God and is a true son of Provence, by all means send him here. If he passes the tests required of all of us, the Order will welcome him with open arms."

A second note arrives shortly therafter:

"It appears the Pope has other plans for this man."

The Pope returns to Audiance

After a day of reflection and meditation. Jean Luke had decided that a strong stance must be taken. As a first step he would go to the audience chamber and help clear the recent troubles assailing Christendom from without and within.

"Vincenzo d'Orsini....You are new to the position so I would like to make clear that this is to be quick as I'm to be in front of the people on the balcony at 4pm."

"I will listen to all petitioners and then answer."

_______________________________________________-

* "May I make clear to everyone that I do not appreciate every edict not to their taste being questioned. If their opinion was true to gods word they would be Pope and not me."

"As to the point of the evil taint of money well spent, but from bad sources please remember ...That even Lucifer would be taken unto gods breast if he were truly repentant."

"Trade? I here you ask."

"If god chooses to make our merchants thick enough not to get a good trade. It is his will. If he also chooses to allow the exchange of goods for the benefit of all ? Are we to challenge it? You step above your place if you think we should"

"If a nation rises to challenge the might of God, it will be struck down! It will not matter where it's money comes from."

"As for the Muslim threat, it is great, but no more than others. With trade and the intelligence that can bring, Who is to say what the possibilities are for bringing the word of Christ to the Heathen.?"

"All the while there is chance to save even one lost soul, I will persevere in that belief"

* Cardinal Jan Von webber, Karl Vandersson. You warm my heart. I am most pleased you made it through such adversity. Come join the council after you are rested. You are very welcome."

* Reading a note. "Would someone inform the Cardinal Richard Bourchier Archbishop of Canterbury that he has my permission to be away from court, but if he stays away too long I may forget he exists? And no to a subordinate."

* "Welcome cardinal Alfons de Borja of Aragon."

* "Cardinal Odo de Bauffremont, please refrain from dirtying your cassock rise and kiss my ring. Then, pray continue."

After listening.

"Pray allow me to hear all concerned. One moment."

After listening to the further statements.

"Hear all.
My thanks to all concerned for their words.
Here is how I feel that gods word may be carried out
I have never had word from this Duke of Savoy or the "Helvetian highwaymen" ,as you put it,that would imply any fervent faith in god. This in conjunction with recent acts of hostility make it necessary to excommunicate them.

The Order of Rhine is instructed to disband. After a suitable period of repentance they may be accepted back into the fold of holy mother church. Further trouble making will be quelled most militantly!
As for Brittany and France."

* "The Dauphin cannot be blamed for what is done without his knowledge and as there is no proof of conspiracy on his part I will say that his alliance partners have let him down. However the Dauphin is ultimately responsible for the acts of the said alliance and I would demand that as penance he excepts the offers presently on the table at Arras."

* "Brittany has no right to find protection other than from his liege lord. I see no outright threat to the crown from the words that Burgundy show me. You have acted in bad faith to your present monarch, even if you feel threatened by someone in his alliance. I will say however that this is a domestic matter between you and he, though Brittany was most pious in it's stand for peace.
(I would ask England to appreciate that and show leniency) After you have presented yourself to King Thomas for judgement I will expect you to come to the Vatican to see the error of your ways through Christ's guidance. Your cardinal is accepted for I feel your small nation needs proper spiritual guidance."

* "This matter with Badden.

The Lord Jakob has been most wise and pious in coming to me repentant and having done all possible to correct his father's sins. We offer our prayers for all that died, including his father. A Requiem mass will be held.
Cardinal Odo de Bauffremont makes a clear plea for his case, but we must take into account many things in passing a fair judgement here.
The fraternal love shall be Paternal for I believe that you should both benefit from the learning to be found here.
1000dcts (1 econ?) and vassal ship to Burgundy. Who will terminate vassal ship when convinced that the son is not like the father. This will have Papal review every year. It will also prove to gossipmongers that accuse Burgundy of expansionism true or false. For if it is proven that Baden is trustworthy and he holds on to the vassal ship, the Duke is as they say. Let his actions speak.
The Margrave will still be entitled to Cardinal representation, and the protection of the church for any reprisals when he has so obviously seen the light of god."

* "The maters concerning Orthodoxy I will be addressed next.
But firstly it is decreed by mother church that Jehan de la Trémoille, Seigneur de Jonvelle is to be given chance to repent his sins. After such time (To be no more than one month) He is to be Hung, Drawn & Quartered, and his parts are to be sent to the corners of Christendom to show what happens when a servant of the church is treated in such a manner. This also reflects upon the states ruler, so take note.

* "The Heretic is as much threat as the Heathen. The Orthodox church has already been warned about it's representatives attitude in court and it's demands for me to visit to discuss matters.
The traitorous nature of Greece has brought us on to thin ice. We may well find ourselves at war. As it is, any Catholic nation wishing to revenge the Greeks tretury by carrying their swords to her capital may do so with my blessing.
I believed peace was possible. I now doubt it.
But I will send the good Cardinal Boivin to try to speak with these heretics so no further conflict will occur. Cardinal Boivin see me in my chambers. (PM)

* "Bishop Martinus of Havelberg, Bradenburg I welcome you as Cardinal. You may kiss my ring."

* "Would the Orthodox delegates return home as I feel they can do no more to HELP their cause. I will be sending a delegate soon to your lands to discus any of the matters you wish."

* "Bishop of Toledo.
Cardinal Santangelo has not got leave to be away from the Vatican. Ask him to present himself. The gap between Orthodox and Holy mother church is widening. It is important we try to prevent all out holocaust. Greece is open to attack by papal consent. It must not go further if it is possible to prevent. Leave your soul in my care my son. I Know the whole picture rest assured."

* "I trust the Venetian ambassador has found all his questions answered. I am pleased with his news."

* "Cardinal Odo. I will ask for help when needed. Thank you. As you are so enthusiastic, you will be going East to speak with the Orthodox heretics on my behalf .Other maters will be given to council when I feel that it is full of members."

* "Bishop Ulrich of Konstanz welcome as a cardinal, if you are your realms nomination. You may kiss my ring."

* "Doge John I Grimaldi. Your repentance has not yet bought you enlightenment.

You tell me you are in a right and just war. This is even as you've been told to find peace?

If it was called for by god why did I not here his words? The bible gives us guidance to make such judgements and I, personally, make them.

You wish blessing's upon your crusaders? On which crusade are they on for I have called none.

The Eastern Romans are in hot water as it is, and as for the division among the heathen. I agree that mother church is blessed by this occurrence and not just Genoa. Your fervent conviction in the teachings as you see them still do you credit, but I would ask you to curb them and follow the politics of the holy word of the Pope and not your own. Be aware that we think there is little to be offered and a lot to be lost when mixing with Orthodoxy. But peace is always worth it. No changes will be made to our church rest assured. I have had no indication that they have ever spoken in true faith and respect. That will be a long time in coming, if ever. Should they not learn from us instead?"

"Please my son .....walk with me"

He gets up and leads Doge John I Grimaldi out of the room to talk .(PM).

Ermepi,

Your continued reluctance to contribute to the game is un-acceptable. Thus, Provence has been made NPC in order that another, more worthy player may bring new life to it.

Your IP number has been made a note of, and your lack-lustre performance in this role will seriously affect your chances of making a successful application to the game in the future, whether under your current login, or another.

The Cardinal of the pope rises with a scroll in his hand

"My lords."

"As my last duty before retirement i must inform you that his Holiness has instructed me that it is imperative that this peace treaty is signed."

"Dauphin I must inform you from his holiness that you should sign the treaty as proposed. As it is Now."

"If you require an explaination please ask your delegate in the Vatican to enlighten you."

"I leave for Rome and hope to find that you have done your duty by god."

"My lords and kings i bid you farewell, and expect to see a copy of the treaty on the desk of the pope forthwith."

"In nomine Patri, et filii, et spiritus sancti..Amen"

He rises and bows to all. Very low to the Countesss., and leaves.

A most unusual visitor presents himself at the Priory at Saint-Gilles. He wears nothing but a crude linen garb and a penitential rope hanging around his neck. His feet are bare and bloodied, apparently after a long and ardous march. While his face bears features of a noble birth, his shaven head turned swarthy, beaten by the rays of merciless August sun.

When granted an audience with Guerin de Montaque, Preceptor of Provence, he falls on both knees and speaks, his hoarse voice coming out from dried throat:

tremoille.jpg

"Most esteemed and just Lord, I come before you to beg your grace and mercy. Formerly I was know as Jehan de la Trémoille, Seigneur de Jonvelle, yet now this name means nothing to me.

I have sinned greatly and beg you to grant me the grace of penance and absolution. I wish to join the Order of Knights of St. John of Jerusalem and fight for the glory of Lord our Saviour."

With these words he prostrates himself before the statue of Christ, arms oustretched.

A letter arrives from Saint-Gilles bearing the seal of the Preceptor of Provence, Guerin de Montaque.

"Holy father, I write to you to ask for clemency on behalf of Jehan de la Trémoille. He is currently under the protection of the Order, and has freely confessed his sins and shown due repentence. It was my thought that according to his wish he be allowed to serve God as a Brother, though not as a Knight, of the Order. I await your reply."

Brother Demetrios entered the old Patriach's chambers with some fresh water. The Orthodox Patriarch had blankets coverning him, and strong incented candles were burning, both illuminating the room and spicing the air. The Patriarch had been ill for many weeks now of an influenza; he had been bled and proscribed rest from the Imperial doctors. It seemed that all he needed was some fresh water.

"Your All Holiness? I trust you are feeling better?"

Patriarch Joseph nodded. "Yes, much better, my freind. What news from Christendom do you bring?"

A long list appeared in the aide's hand.

"Your All Holiness, His Roman Majesty has finally finished the legal work of restoring Trebizond to the Empire. The former Despot of Trebizond will reign as a co-emperor."

The Patriarch smiled. "Wonderful news! Let this be the first step towards restoring the Empire."

"That is not yet all, Your Grace. His Majesty has engaged and destroyed Mustafa's rebels near Angora, but by doing so, he has made the Venetians see the Empire as treasonous."

Joseph sighed sadly. "Manuel is such a headstrong man. I had hoped that he would have been more diplomatic, like his father was and his son is learning to be? Our current affairs with Genoa and the West remain deplorable. Ah well; we shall make the best of a bad situation."

"Oh yes, your Grace, concerning that last statement, we recently recieved a letter from His Grace the King of Bohemia which you may wish to read. There is also the ascention of the new Bishop of Rome. I suggest that our envoys in Rome establish our planned talks with him regarding closer union in the Church, as per your desires."

"Very well, Demetrios. What else have be to discuss?"

"Nothing as of yet, Your Grace. May God bless you and speed your healing."

"Thank you Demetrios. Go with God."

Cardinal Odo leans to kiss the fisherman's ring of the Pope:

cardinal.jpg

"Most Holy Father, this is a truly joyous ruling, both grand in its wisdom and just in its piety.

I can assure your most sacred person that Duke Philippe will be truly honoured to humbly take upon himself the godly task of purging the lands of Savoy and Helvetia from the stain of sin and smell of damnation. I pray the most wise decision of Your Holiness so that the Duke of Savoy submits himself as a vassal to the good Duke of Burgundy, as is provided by the Treaty of Arras, suffices to keep him from going astray from the path of the Eternal Light that is Christ, our Saviour in the future.

Alas, I beg Your Holiness for guidance, for I don't know what advice should I give to good Duke about the case of Swiss and their recalcitrant leader, the snake of Bern. While the spirit of Christian mercy and forgiveness suggests that these people should only be liberated from the heretical villain that rules them but allowed remain an independent state, that more reasonable and I trust, not too cynical, side of my soul points out that the Helvetians cannot be left to their own devices, but rather should be subjected to the rule of ancient and wise Houses of Burgundy and Habsburgs. Hence I shall await Your Holiness ruling on this issue.

As for the issue of Duke of Brittany, being a man of cloth myself, I shall advise the good Duke Philippe to be merciful and lenient to the "ally" who treated him in a way treacherous and ungodly. Albeit, as the good Duke is a man of sword and action, rather than holy book and prayer, I would not blame him if he seeks vengeance for this wrongdoing. Still, I trust he will never act against the better judgement of his companion and ally, King of England who was appointed by Your Holiness to judge his reluctant vassal and disloyal ally.

I am also deeply grateful for Your Holiness wise and swift mediation in the unfortunate conflict between the Margrave of Baden and my good Duke of Burgundy. I shall dispatch envoys to Dijon immediately, asking Duke Philippe to prepare himself for the arrival of his future vassal and, I pray, present friend and brother. I shall also take upon myself to instruct the young and pious Margrave in the secrets of rulership and when I deem him ready, I shall ask good Duke of Burgundy to free him from the bond of vassalage, which shall be, I am sure nothing but a bondage of love that exists between a brother older and experienced and a sibling younger and diligent.

For the matter of Jehan de la Trémoille, Seigneur de Jonvelle, he has already arrived at the Priory at Saint-Gilles, there to repent for his sins and as I now hear from the esteemed Preceptor of Provence, he was accepted. I pray this penance of life-time devotion to the service of our Saviour and His Holy Church suffices in the eyes of Your Holiness to atone for his sins.

Finally, as for Your Holiness' most gracious appointment of my humble person to the talks with the Orthodox schismatics, I pray I will not fail the hopes of the Holy Mother Church nor these of Your Holiness. I place myself at your most kind disposal and await the order to depart."

Duke Luis IV. d´Anjou bangs the door open and steps in in full battle dress. With him are five Knights from Provence, also in full battle gear. The duke is handed the peace draft and reads it carefully. After he finishes, he looks upon the burgundian with a glare.
"And this you call a peace?" This is but a....., a...... it doesn´t even deserve any name! The rightful masters of France are been taken land from and they just sign? This is a disgrace for all of France! This..."
His face is bright red with anger and he stops talking briefly, as one of the knights steps closer to him and whispers something into his ear.
The duke´s eyes widen with disbelieve and fear. After the knight steps back again he slowly turns back to face the table and stutters, visibly shaken:
"My, my aide has just told me of what has happened while I was in the field with my army. It seems as there is no choice but one left for me to take. I will sign this paper, if only for today."
He takes the feather from an aide and signes the peace draft with haste.
"But be sure that the people of Provence will never forget this day as a day on where france was mortified in face of it´s enemies, and the day will come where the true people of France will arise and take back what is rightfully theirs!"
He turns at once and leaves the room quickly, his knights following him.
