Doge John I Grimaldi enters the Papal court, in the sacks and rags of one who is repenting. He bows before the Pope, face to the floor as he awaits the Pope's approval to speak. Once the Pope gives him approval, John I rises enough to kiss the Papal ring, then looks to the floor and speaks to the Pope.
"Your most holiness,
I beg your forgiveness, for I have sinned. The war with the Mamelukes was and is a just war, called for by God, but my intentions were not pure, which is why Genoa was stricken by God's punishment. I have prayed to God for forgiveness, Cardinal De'Guidici has prayed for Genoa as have every bishop, parish-priest and clergy-man and women in all of Liguria's possessions. Now God has begun to bless Genoa as our intentions turn from greed to self-preservation and freedom of the Christians throughout the Holy lands and the lands of Africa. Genoa has now been ascertained of victory by God, so I have come here to request your blessing as the Genovese crusaders march to the holy land to vanquish the armies of Satan.
I know it is not my place to question your decrees, but I must request to know further on one of your decrees. You stated that trade with the heathens was allowed, if it preserved our country. For every ducat that enters the Christian pocket from spice or silk, a ducat enters the pocket of the heathen. The heathens are soldiers of satan, and satan will not allow resources to stand idle, he will use them against christiandom. We have already seen Satan at work in his heathen soldiers. The Eastern Romans have turned on our Venetian brothers in an attempt to aid the heathen turks. The massive heathen armies now turn on our prodigal child in the north and victory is growing closer for the Hordes of Satan. Even now, though, I see division in Satan's army, a sign that God is truly with Genoa this time, as we have repented of our sins. The heathens march against themselves. This sign, along with the peace between Genoa and the Romans, show that God has now allowed Genoa to bring victory and now is the time where we shall finally free the holy lands from Satan's grip."
John I moves closer to the Pope and whispers into his ear. (pm)
After he is finished, he awaits the Pope's response, while he places his face back to the floor.
