An envoy arrives from Venice ...

"Your Majesty, King Janus,

On behalf of His Serene Highness, Francesco Foscari, Doge of Venice, I bring Christian greetings and neighborly salutations. The Republic of St. Mark desires Your Majesty to know that we desire nothing but peace and friendship, and should like to extend to you a pact of non-aggression, that together we might ensure the peace and stability of the East, and to jointly defend Christendom against the onslaught of the heathen."

YOUR FORUM NEEDS YOU

Folks,

Many of you will remember Martinus' History of Christendom from the last round. Now Mart is working his cotton socks off on the National Statistics, so it is not fair to ask him to take this burden up again.

So it's up to one of you good people! We need someone to record events as they happen and compile them into a history of the game, partly to give us all something to look back on and also so that players new to the game can gain a grasp of what's happened in our glorious history.

Do you have what it takes?

You will need:

· First and foremost, a passionate belief in the need to preserve and further the roleplaying spirit of the game.

· A good command of English and basic grammar.

· A working grasp of vB codes and the inner-mechanics of the vB forum systems, in order to help you make the most of the facilities at your disposal and aid you in writing a truly great history.

· Plenty of time to devote to this duty and your role as a player-nation.

In return, you get:

· To keep hold of your nation.

· Although a full modship cannot be offered, you will get the groovy, customised title of "RPG Chronicler" instead of the run-of-the-mill, post-based one under your name.

· A sense of satisfaction in knowing you are adding further depth to the game.

· My, and Gryphon's eternal gratitude.

Please get your applications and email address to josefgiven@hotmail.com

BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE, BE THE RPG CHRONICLER.

This thread will vapourise once a suitable applicant has been found.

A tall, stout, Italian enters your court, wearing the garb of Genoa. He bows before the King and addresses the court.

"Noble King Janus of Cyprus, Jerusalem, and Armenia,

I am Adame de Judicibus and I bring word from the Doge of Genoa. Although our two nations have fueded in the past, Genoa is willing to look past those problems. As you know, your recent sack of Alexandria could bring your nation into some rough waters. My Doge has a proposition for you."

The ambassador hands you a sealed message (ooc: a pm).

"I have also been sent as an ambassador to your fair kingdom, if you accept me."

The Bishop of Toledo hands over a letter from Cardinal Santangelo to His Holiness the Pope.

”Your Holiness,

Most distressing news have come to my ear. It’s a wish to negotiate with the Orthodox, so that we could live more easily side by side, and to do so we would have to change some Catholic Dogmas. I am terrified, since this would be the end of our soles. Let me remind us all of the excommunication of the Patriarch of the Orthodox, they are the wrong believers. To compromise our faith for vanity is a horrible idea, and I’m sure that you, Your Holiness, just as I will denounce every effort to go that way.

The worst part is that all this comes from the Burgundian Cardinal, I feal obliged to deliver the correspondence:

”Beloved brother,

With the peace in France finally approaching, we believe we should turn our faces to our Christian brothers in the East, who while mistaken still worship One and True God.

Hence we decided it would be wise and pious to support His Holiness, who likewise wants only friendship with the Eastern Christians, in his holy endeavours. To this end we wish to inform you, beloved brothers, that we wish to support the candidacy of the pious Cardinal Boivin of France as an emissary to the East conferrence, which he would greatly deserve. Hence we would be willing to support the acts of His Holiness, even if the unity would require some changes to the dogmas of the Holy Mother Church.

I await your answer, pious brothers in Christ
By own hand,
Cardinal Odo”

“Mihi Amicus,

Don’t you think, co-operating with the heathens would mean the end of our soles? I’m afraid it would… Everything can not always go smooth… just because we want peace, we can not neglect our faith. That would be an even greater pain than war and hostility.

Though, I agree we can send an emissary to the blind sheep in the east. But to compensate our faith for the sake of a truce with them is wrong. They are the ones whom walks blindfolded, and should get the guidance, and it is our duty to give them that. Not to destroy, or mix the pure faith with ”Christian decadence”, they are the negotium perambulans in tenebris.

Sub ducatu, Toledo

Santangelo

Cardinal of Castille”

Next matter I which to share with you is the horrible treatment of a monk. To treat the church in such a way is despicable. The man guilty of the crime is Jehan de la Trémoille, Seigneur de Jonvelle. He had no right to interfere with in the matters of the church, if that monk had done some wrong, it’s a matter of the church, no one else. I leave the matter entirely in your hands, so that your men can investigate this serious matter further.

Sub ducatu, Toledo
Your Humble Servant

Cardinal Manrique de Lara, Duke of Santangelo”

Raymond: "It is a most difficult decision. Therefore I must resign myself from the issue, it weighs too heavily on me. I am sorry, I have failed you."

de Naillac: "Now,now, there is no need for that. The issue will resolve itself. The man must be punished, and I will take it upon myself to do it. I should not have shrunk from the responsibility in the first place.

Now, onto more pressing issues, what is the news from Genoa and Portugal?"

Raymond: "None. It is eerily quiet in the West."

de Naillac: "Perhaps we can spice things up. The fleet is ready to sail?"

Raymond: "Yes, of course, but is it wise?"

The phrase: 'Heathens and others who have abandoned the true faith.'

The question: Do the Orthodox fall under this category?"

As the Castillan bishop speaks, Cardinal Odo only shakes his head in amusement and slight annoyance:

cardinal.jpg

"His Holiness is well aware of this letter, my good bishop, if only because I have penned an epistle of the same content for His most pious and wise consideration as well.

As I haven't received any answer from the Holy Father, I find that the matter presented by me was not of a high importance and hence I beg His Holiness for forgiveness, if I have occupied his most precious time with triffles. I pray these were other responsibilities, rather than resentment of my theological musings or, heaven forbid, animosity towards the candidacy of good Cardinal Boivin which I supported, that prevented the Vicar of Christ on Earth from replying."

All the time lying prostrate on the floor, he turns to the Pope:

"Your Holiness, if you find fault in the words I sent to your most holy person, pray tell me, so that I can mend my ways if I wandered off from the fountain of wisdom and love which is the sacred dogma of the Holy Mother Church."

He sighs heavily and continues:

"As for this rash knight, Jehan de la Trémoille, Seigneur de Jonvelle, rest assured most Holy Father that after being severely reprimended for his inadequate behaviour, he is now considering taking the holy orders, to serve the Holy Mother Church. I shall inform Your Holiness further when he makes his decision as to which of these most esteemed organisations to choose.

I trust I have answered sufficiently the concerns raised by the Castillan bishop. If not, Most Holy Father, I humbly await your further questions.

Now, with this, undoubtedly serious matter hopefully resolved, I beg Your Holiness for the verdict on the charges of treachery against Dukes of Brittany and Savoy, as well as Your most gracious mediation in the conflict between Duke of Burgundy and Margrave of Baden. "

To His Excellency Pierre Raymond, Commander of the Tongue of Provence and Grand Commander of the Order of the Knights of St. John from His Grace Cardinal Odo de Bauffremont, Archbishop of Besancon, Count of Charny and Metropolitan of Burgundy,

In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Beloved brother in Christ, I write to you with a matter as delicate, as it is uplifting for my heart and soul, as it shows how even the sins of Hubris and Wrath can turn themselves into the Virtues of Humility and Valour, if shone upon by the pure light of the Holy Mother Church.

For you have learned, undoubtedly, about one Jehan de la Trémoille, Seigneur de Jonvelle, a knight young and courageous, yet prideful and rash in his anger, who in a way most unfortunate allowed his rage to get hold of his tongue in the halls of the august Imperial Diet.

From this very day I prayed to the God Almighty to change his heart which albeit pure and capable of pious deeds, was ravished by a cancer of sin and ungodly pride. And lo, once again the love of Our Lord and Saviour has won over the clutches of Devil, for the man wishes to leave behind his sinful ways and join the order most holy.

Hence my epistle is addressed to you, my brother, for nowhere than in the Provencal House of the most esteemed and pious Order of the Knights of St. John shall he find the righteous guidance and opportunity to prove his valour and piety both in the heat of battle with the minions of Devil, and in prayer and work diligent, that teach humility and obedience.

Thus I beg you to accept him into the fold of knights of the greatest esteem. I await your answer, so that he may be sent to meet you in the Priory of St. Gilles.

May God bless the Order of the Knights of St. John with salvation eternal and victory supreme.

By own hand at Rome,

Cardinal Odo de Bauffremont

A messenger arrives bringing a number of sealed letters for the Duke. Philippe reads them quickly, an expression on his face changing from disbelief to anger and from interest to fury.

Philip.jpg

"Most excellent Legate, my lords, this is an outrage! Thanks to the word games of our dear Duke of Brittany, my land of Alsace has been captured by the Badenian troops.

Yet, my noble guests, this is not the end to my fury! For I wish to present you with the following facts, found out by my informants. First of all, as you may see, noble Princes, Duke of Savoy, an ally of King of France in this war, who sent all his army to die in the fields of Paris, is not present in this council despite invitation.

What is more, though, I have learned that few months ago he has entered into a treacherous alliance, called the Order of Rhine, with the Margrave of Baden and the chieftain of the Swiss bandits. This is a letter, for your perusal, most noble Legate, sent from the Duke of Savoy to the Helvetian highwaymen:

Indeed, it seems that the "Chairman" finally decided to participate in this tragic war, in this most convenient for him moment when troops of my brother England and mine were locked in Paris, by the virtue of the sacred order of the Holy Mother Church, which I respect truly, and thus unable to defend themselves.

Most pious Cardinal, I could also speak of the marriage offer made by the good Dauphin to the leader of mountainous villains of Switzerland, yet I pray to the God Almighty that it was just a folly on the part of young and rash Charles, rather than a proof linking him to this vile conspiracy.

Yet not only for a disfavour and punishment of the treacherous Duke of Savoy and vile leader of Helvetians I call, most noble Legate, as they have committed exactly the same deed as Burgundy and Castille in my hypothetical question. For I have other news and documents, much more troubling and disturbing, which, I pray, will not dismay and sadden my brother England too greatly.

For while I have learned, from the words of my English brother, that there was some secret correspondence between the Duke of Brittany and Switzerland before the fateful attack, I have dismissed these rumours, however true, as I had no proof as to the Duke's evil and treacherous intentions. Truly, his lack of will to stand and fight at the side of his liege was puzzling, yet he claimed to be a man of deep faith, so I was understanding. And indeed, the Holy Mother Church teaches that we shall not accuse a fellow man if we have no evidence or proof.

Albeit, my lords, by the act of Providence, this letter has found a way to my hands, given in Flandres by some unknown messenger to the good merchants of Dijon, who were returning from their voyage to Sweden, happy with a beneficial deal made. Obviously, the foolish envoy has mistaken them for Swedes, while the good Burgundians saw it as something important and promptly returned to my governor. Thus allow me to read it, for your horror and final proof of my words:

My lords, this is a disgrace! Outrage! Treachery! Notice the date on this letter. It was sent after I placed my signature under the treaty, hence the accusations of preventing the peace to occur are entirely false. Also, as this missive bears marks of a generic, rather than specific epistle, it is obvious that a number of similar letters was sent to the courts of Christendom, and perhaps even beyond, as I am now sure the Duke of Brittany would ally even with Muslim or Devil to further his treachery!

Albeit, it is not the point of my tirade. For the Duke of Brittany, while playing a role of a loyal ally to me and a loving vassal to my brother, England, conspired against us with rulers of Switzerland, Savoy and Baden, instigating the treacherous attack! Thus his words, mocking my pleas for the right of free passage so that I could defend my subjects, now dead or suffering under the yoke of invaders, appear in a different and a truly terrible light.

Hence, taking all present for my witnesses, speaking before the God and men, I accuse the Duke of Brittany, the Duke of Savoy, the Chieftain of Switzerland and the deceased Margrave of Baden, that they conspired to bring an unjust war (point 2); that they didn't seek papal blessing or indeed didn't formally declare a war upon my House, and started this treacherous war (point 3); that they conspired against my brother England and against me, with the Duke of Brittany committing a crime even more heinous and vile, as he schemed against his sovereign and his ally (point 9); and that they have been working against the vital interests of the Holy Mother Church, jeopardising the peace process in this noble Council by attacking in a moment so treacherous and fateful (point 15).

Through your hands, noble Cardinal, I now humbly lay these charges and evidence at the feet of St. Peter's Throne and beg His Holiness for his just and final verdict, so help me God!"

A message appears for Duke Philippe of Burgundy from John V,
If you notice in the letter,
I need some help in stopping the Burgundian advance.
the suggestion was strictly defensive, and only precautionary. Since it should be obvious to all that I do not have any claims on Burgundian soil, I do not see why you are so worried. If you were not thinking of advancing onto Breton territory, I don't see what you have to fear about me making this agreement with the Swedes (that is, of coure if you don't have ambitions towards Sweden, in which case I will withdraw my proposal). If you are truly interested in peace, a defensive alliance between two neighboring principalities would not be of any consequence of you, now would it? And please give it up about the Helevitian mob. You know perfectly well that your strength outweighs them by ten times, and you could crush them if you needed to. Indeed, I see this as an excellent way for you to take out your warlust in some place other than our country, and perhaps do a little expansion?

Yours Truly,
John V.

Cardinal Olbrecht returns, he whispers a few words to the clerk stating regional Hussite problems as his reason for staying away for so long.
He briefly reads the notes. His head appears above the notes of various speeches. The green eyes fix cynically on the Castillian.

"Indeed."

He laughs slightly before passing the notes to the clerk.

"Your Holiness if I may I find my undoubtedly learned friend but seemingly foolish brother.

Our church is the mother church and to use the parable of the prodigal son we are the loving father. The Orthodox church is the foolish, conceited, unwise son that runs away lives a life of decadence. We as clergymen and more importantly as high-ranking clergymen we have an important role we are the brothers who stay with our father and work day-in day-out for the betterment of the church.
While I and no doubt others sit with my father and encourage the prodigal to return and when he does to open our arms to say "Prepare the fattest calf." And prepare a feast for that prodigal son.

You it seems would be the brother that would sit on the sidelines and ask. "Why do you welcome him ?" I shall tell you the Orthodox church is misguided but it is our brethren nonetheless and we have a duty to work with them to unite our churches and return to the true way Christendom is meant to be. United, particularly in the face of the undoubted infidel - the Mohammadean. It seems you wish to remain divided throughout Christendom and thus providing the Mohammadean an easy victory.

I believe dear sir you have drawn you line in the sand and we all know which side you stand on."

A letter reached the King after the ambassador read it.

Great King of Catalonia and Aragon,

Your offer was not one that allowed many choices. I feel that the best direction for my Kingdom is to accept your offer of love. I shall adopt the Ruling house of Catalonia and Aragon as the heir to my kingdom. But, if you are to be as James of Bourbon was, my heir shall be one of my own family. My current claims on Sicily have also been officially renounced.

signed,

Giovanna the Second, Queen of Naples, Campania, Beneveto, Caserta, Abruzzi,Chieti, L'Aquila, Pescara, Teramo, Molise, Campobasso, Isernia, Basilicata, Matera, Potenza, Salerno, Calabria, Cantanzaro, and Cosenza. Duchess of Apulia, Bari, Brindisi, Foggia, Lecce, and Taranto. Princess of Serbia. Rightful Countess of Provence, Nice, Marseilles, Toulon, Arles.

(OOC: I am aware that this deal war historical and I am aware she adopted someone else as her heir after Mr. Alfonsy couldn't wait :). Aragon won't inherit Naples..any way I can stop it :D. )

Bishop Harold Beauclair of Brittany kneels and addresses his holiness.

I am here with a message from your most humble servant John de Montfort, Duke of Brittany.

To His Holiness who Gives Light and Hope to All of Christendom,

I have heard rumors of your holiness's great plan to enlarge the college. If these rumors may be true, could I recommend Bishop Beauclair to a post at the Vatican. You may be assured that he is of great piety, not comparable to your holiness of course, and impeccable character.

On a serious charge, your holiness, by the Duke of Burgundy, I am deeply troubled. He has accused me of consorting with the Swedes and the Swiss with ill intentions on his Duchy.

May I respond by saying that the correspondence I had with the Swedes was entirely composed of forming a defensive alliance, an alliance that the Duke has not to fear if he had not already have ambitions on my Duchy or the Kingdom of Sweden. I do not know why the Duke's mind jumped to my conspiring against him immediately after he received message of my swedish correspondence. Indeed, if he were to read carefully, he would find that my words were not against him at all, only the possible agression by the Duchy of Burgundy, a feeling that is not unfounded, as your holiness may note. Furthermore, Pierre's correspondence with the court of Switzerland was unknown to me, but upon investigating one of his later letters, it was seen that Pierre actually counseled the leader of Switzerland not to go to war with the Duke of Burgundy.

I am deeply hurt by the Duke's accusations. The duke was one who I considered to be one of my greatest friends, yet now, I have no faith in him anymore. I have known his father, his grandfather, and I have respected them, and been respected by them in turn. Why the present Duke, who calls himself "the Good" is so averse to me is a complete mystery. However, your holiness, I will submit to the Vatican's arbitration of the matter. Perhaps then God will tell me why the Duke of Burgundy dislikes me so.

Most Humbly,
John of Montfort.
