Philippe raises slowly, an almost unnoticeable tear forming in his eye:

Philip.jpg

"Most august Emperor, indeed there is great wisdom among Electors of the Empire of proud Charlemagne, that they have chosen a man of such virtue and honour as the first among Christian Princes.

With your most gracious protection granted to my defenseless family and subjects I can now lay aside at least this one of the numerous and heavy burdens that trouble my heart and seek peace in this council. Truly, if I or any of my servants have ever caused a smallest slight to you, by any word unthoughtful or act careless, I humbly beg your most gracious forgiveness.

I salute you, my Emperor, my liege and my brother."

He finishes with a sweeping, deep bow.

Charles of Orléans nods to the Duke of Burgundy :

"My cousin, your own amendment to the said treaty of Arras is acceptable to my party. I shall sign it."

The Iron Duke walks to the treaty and apposes his signature - Charles, Duke of Orléans, Count of Valois, Peer of France, now First Peer of the Kingdom of France - and seals it off with his personal seal.

Not only do I sign this treaty, but I also offer my help to my new friend Philippe, Duke of Burgundy, as First Peer of the Kingdom that I am, in his war against the felonous Margrave of Baden. Let us be considered allies against this aggressor and let us unite after this long and fratricide war against adversity.

Thomas stops his discussion with the Knight from the Teutonic Order. He had been explaining about the Chivalric code in the Order of the Garter when he stopped as the Holy Roman Emperor spoke. Standing, nods in the Emperor's direction and speaking:
Thomas.jpg

"Your Grace, you honor me with your kind words. As such a noble man, removed from this conflict, may we all benefit from your unbiased observations and words of wisodom."

(Noticing Charles of Orléans signing the Treaty of Arras)
"Good duke, it is indeed a blessing that peace may once again be between our lands. I look forward to a new age of peace and cooperation, as I see that old wounds have been set aside in your offer to help my brother Philippe in his war with the cowardly Alliance of the Rhein."

Finally, Thomas signs the Treaty of Arras...

Philippe raises again, extending his hand to Duke Charles of Orleans:

Philip.jpg

"My dear cousin, I follow you hastily to sign the treaty of Arras and extend my right arm to you in friendship, forgiving and forgetting the past grievances and troubles, and begging that you granted me the same absolution."

He places his signature under the document
Philippe, by the grace of God duke of Burgundy, of Lotharingia, of Brabant, and of Limburg, count of Flanders, of Artois, of Burgundy, palatine of Hainaut, Holland, and of Zeeland and of Namur, grand peer of France, marquess of the Holy Roman Empire, lord of Friesland, of Salins and of Mechelen.

and affixes his personal seal
smallseal.jpg

Then he turns to the Emperor and speaks:

"My Emperor and liege, with this most fortunate turn of fate, I most respectfully thank you for your assistance and if you choose so, I shall be honoured to fight by your side. Albeit thanks to this gift of Providence, I am no longer forced to rely on your kindness. Hence if it is your wish, pray order your troops to remain in Austria, so even this vilest of scoundrels, the chieftain of Swiss villains, would not be able to accuse you of breaking your word of honour.

Rest assured my liege that I shall strive to be merciful and generous to the Margrave of Baden, who, however attacked me unjustly and treacherously, is still a man of noble birth and dignity, which I respect and honour. Albeit, the leader of Swiss bandits, who defamed not only mine but also your most noble name with his peasant tongue, shall meet with a swift and terrible vengeance. This I swear on the bones of St. Andrew!"

To His Grace Bernhard, Margrave of Baden from His Eminence Cardinal Odo de Bauffremont, Archbishop of Besancon, Count of Charny and Metropolitan of Burgundy,

In the name of the Most Sacred Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, Christian greetings. Amen.

Beloved son, with great dismay and sorrow we have learned of your recent sinful passion that, instigated by a demonic pride, wrath and wrongly placed loyality, caused you to take arm against your friend, protector and neighbour, the good Duke of Burgundy.

Indeed, by attacking a man bound by sacred and holy oaths, which prevented him from defending truly, you have sided with the forces of Devil and fell prey to the temptations of Satan the Arch-Demon. And when, together with your diabolical ally, you cheerished your treacherous and apparent victory, the Lord God Almighty, may His name forever be praised, had chosen to punish the sinful and protect the meek, changing the heart of good Duke of Orleans and thus sending the mighty legions of vengeance against you, seeking rightful and just retribution.

Albeit, as our Lord and Saviour teaches us in the parable of the Prodigal Son, even the greatest sinner can find his way back to the path of virtue if he repents and takes penance for the sins committed. We urge you, thus, our beloved yet misguided son, to throw yourself at the mercy of Duke of Burgundy, who is severe in his vengeance, yet just in his judgements and forgiving in his mercy.

We beg you, not only for the salvation of your immortal soul, but also that of your subjects, to undo the wrong you have done by swearing the oath of fealty and homage to good lord Burgundy, so that he may rest assured that never again you shall raise against him like you did on this fateful night, jeopardising your immortal soul.

We pray you no longer feel bound and constrained by the oaths and pledges you made while tempted and lead into evil by the devilish snake who is the leader of Swiss bandits and peasants. If, though, the misguided sense of honour and loyality still urges you to aid the treacherous villain, know that you are hereby absolved from your words and promises given to him, by the power vested in us by God, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

We pray the Lord our Saviour, in His infinite love and wisdom, inspires your heart to seek penance. Go and sin no more.

By own hand at Besancon,

Cardinal Odo de Bauffremont, Archbishop of Besancon, Count of Charny and Metropolitan of Burgundy

A letter arrives for the Queen of Naples, carrying the seal of the King of Aragon himself.

"To Giovanna the second, Queen of Naples

Most Puissant and Magnificient Queen,
We cannot avoid but to be amused by the activity of Your Majesty, who approached us with words of peace and alliance but then attempts to soil our honor pressing false claims on our lands. We are aware that, coming from a French family, you have the moral standards of a scoundrel, yet the fair winds of Italy have coupled them with the finesse of a velvet fur. We cannot but declare our admiration for the graciousness of Your Majesty, who has shared more company in the conjugal bed that men are to be found in the Naples dungeons. Something which does not surprise us, since what occupies the first usually ends filling the other.

Those, note you, are not indeed the words of somebody willing for peace, alas, neither they are the ones of somebody willing for war. As strange it may sound, they are the words of somebody willing for love. Indeed, mighty Queen, we write this letter with a proposal, a proposal that only a woman of your experience and stature can avaluate. We have noted that despite you active conjugal policy you are yet to be provided with a heir to your kingdom, possibly because your former husbands thought they could fool you, something in which they prove their own condition as fools. We are not, mighty Queen, disposed to commit the same mistake, as we are sure it would be an insult to your intelligence to fall prey to such a tired scheme to strip you of your kingdom. And it would also be an insult to our intelligence, as it would be easier to take it by the force of the sword.

We do not come with a marrying proposal. But yet we come with a matter of love. And yet our aim is to provide you with a son. As the love I am speaking of is the love of a son. Our love, gracious Queen. We are, sadly, an orphan stripped of my lovely parents at a too tender age, and we are in need of a mother that can direct us and provide us with the much needed motherly love. And in the Christendom there is no other woman of virtue more proven, of discretion and feminity not subject to discussion, although somebody could point that is because nothing can be said of the vacuum, than Your Majesty. That is for we plea with all the love of a son that you move your gentle arm towards us and accept this sheep willing to return, this heir. Of course, we shall not need to note you the inherent advantages of this. As, who is not disposed to fight a kingdom most fiercely than its own heir? Which son would not give his very own life for his mother?

Of course, should you decide otherwise, my great Queen, let us assure you that our love would not finish, yet rather be changed in nature, as we will follow the steps of thousands of other men, and make your Majesty our next conquest.

From his own hand at Barcelona,

Alfons V the Magnanimous, King of Aragon, Corsica, Sardinia, Valencia, Majorca, Menorca and the Two Sicilies, Count of Barcelona."

In the Papal private chambers

Count de Nombres and Lemmy De Motorredd of Hevdy Metele in Navarre sit close in concentration as Jean-Luke watches the game of Chess they played in his private chambers overlooking the Basilika.
Quite a hot day today. Not only was the sun beating hard on St. Peters square reflecting up through the window but the popes temper was heated too.

"I spend hours in meditation, days in thought and, no doubt, months in torment contemplating the problems in this world, including this court. And still no proper solutions!"

"What say you Lemmy?"

He turns from the game.

"Holy Father. I don't see what your problem is. Just bump some heads together, and make some decrees."

"People have been without papal guidance for too long and have even forget courtly Etiquette"

"Some show little reverence for you and the church and should be chastised. How can we contend with the Infidels of the south and Heretics of the East with war in our lands breaking out a over the place.?"

Count de Nombres breaks his concentration from the game and chips in.

"Holy father. You must make some decrees to make it clear to those that are true Christians what to do to follow the path of god and Holy enlightenment"

"It will not do to accept the current attitude in court much longer either. Some there would happily undermine Mother church and play their own political game"

Jean-Luke looks at his friends honest and concerned faces, and smiles.

"Gentlemen. I see your point, but should not a father be tolerant and patient with his children?"

"I'm sure this problem is not going to go without some kind of action though. Continue your game. I will go and meditate on this matter, and then I suppose I must hold audience again"

___________________________
___________________________

Later as a storm brews in the south he enters and sits on the throne of St. Peter. Peering around he sees there are still faces missing, and frowns.

"Mr. Crusheronie .........when your ready"

___________________________

He reads a note handed to him.
"Teutonic Speech in HRE..... Hmmmm. I will speak with Venice on this matter as I'm not happy that one of their Vassals are Moslem. It is hoped a program of change and segregation will be forthcoming if this is true."

"As for the other matter of money, and action my decree will clear that point. For if you use manure to make roses the products are fine roses. This applies to the use of borrowed funds from any non Catholic state"
________________________________

* Looking down with a benevolent smile on Charles of Naples. He asks.
" My dear sir! Do I take it that among so many that do, that there are still loyal, and faithful followers of Christ that don't judge the actions of their pope?"

"There are so few I sometimes forget"

"You have made my day. Would you tell Her Majesty, Giovanna II that she is most generous in her offer, and her suggestion would save us soiling our hands with the heathen, but would allow us not to "Cut off our papal nose, to spite the face"

"I will send her a note explaining my position forthwith"
_________________________________

* "Well. It seems the court is quite today let us adjuorn to write some Papal decrees"
____________________________________

He leaves and returns some time later.

"My Chamberlain Wesley Crusheronie will now read two Papal decrees. The second is to become Papal policy."

The chamberlain steps forward and unrolls the first of two scrolls. Breaking the papal seal.

A worrying letter arrives.
"We are deaply worried when we heard an Edict made by your holiness.
We could not beleive our ears. Do you approve of money given to nation by satans aprentices on earth ? the Muslims ? .
As long as they are for good. This i found remarkably strange. Support from the devil is then looked upon as good by the Holy See.
Is this true ?"

The cardinal from the Vatican looks as if he's beginning to get indigestion. Calling for milk he rises to address the delegates.

"To answer my lord Duke of Burgundy I would first like to read two Papal decrees just received from the Vatican. It is the second that should be relevant."

"Please take note of points, 2, 3, 8,9, &15 of Papal policy. The answer would be that both Castile and Burgundy would be in Papal disfavour."

"Great King of France I will beg you not to be overly sensitive to this Hypothetical question as I believe it is asked in good faith, and to clear such points is very important to his Holiness"
"It seems to me there is one point that we stick on."

"I must now say that the opinions of those that are objective or in your interests must be considered. The Teutonic order and the Duke D'Anjou (Your first peer) cannot be ignored when putting forward an enlightened view and His Imperial Majesty will always have the Popes ear. Perhaps you should listen also"

"Perhaps, as I have failed to prevail upon the victor for further compassion. You may consider conceding the desired provinces on the condition that the ownership of said province is taken to appeal in the court of the Vatican. Upon a decision all involved must abide by gods judgement."

"This would temporarily solve the problem and bring peace."

"In this game of politics things must adapt and change. Seldom are things sorted to ones satisfaction in one go. It comes now to you as everyone else has made it clear what their views are"

"I will make it clear however that this peace and the mortal salvation of most of your country lies ultimately in the hands of the lords and Kings present and not his Holiness"

"I am here merely for spiritual guidance and advice"

"Yet again his Imperial Majesty has stepped forward and shown the true mettle of a pious ruler and added riches to current events. Charlemains blood runs true. Thank you for removing the threat to these talks lord emperor"

"Great king of England. Victor and tolerant lord. Even as you are unable to go further in your concessions, and refuse the Popes personal offers, may a beg of you one last time to take that one step that will bring peace and accept my suggestion to the Dauphin in compromise? Please! It distresses us that we are so close and yet all are not signing"

"Your obedient servant my lords"

"Let us pray for enlightenment and tolerance"

He intones a prayer, finishing.........

A letter arrives bearing the great seal of the Hapsburgs:
My dear Chairman,
I believe my uncle Reinhardt has somewhat offended you with his announcement. He is alas not as subtle as I would have been but he is none the less true to my wishes.
As a member of an ancient noble house I must uphold the honour of my family and the tradition of honour it represents.
In your quarrel with the Duke of Burgundy many could interpret it as mocking the tradition of noble houses and the respect they are held in. I have no wish to send good men to their deaths in your lands but I will uphold the virtue of the noble houses.
Whatever our differences surely you can understand my position in this matter. If I do not defend the House de Bourgogne then I will be bringing dishonour upon my own lineage.
It may seems foolish to one outside the noble houses but they have ruled Europe for centuries. My own ancestors would be utterly ashamed of me if I were to fail to uphold their ideals and virtues. If I were to allow the house of Hapsburg to be shamed through inaction or cowardice then I would be unfit to rule Austria and wear the Imperial crown. Burgundy has no need of my forces to prosecute the war and so they will be remaining in their barracks or training along my borders.

You have had your honour questioned for acting in a way which could be construed as cowardice and gross opportunism. You have made war upon one bound by holy vows to make peace with those he has quarrel with for decades. To fight a man who cannot strike back as his army is unable to move without offending the Holy Father, whose mind is bent on seeking peace with his neighbours and whose heart still mourns for his departed father; all of this tarnishes your reputation and marks you with suspicion.

I am not responsible for your actions only my own, to try to help you I have risked my reputation, flirted with grave disaster and violated the very laws the Houses uphold. Chairman every letter that I write to you in this fashion raises your worth before the world and cheapens my own. I can do little more without losing the respect of my people, the goodwill of my peers and the support of the Diet itself.

My own army desire me to invade you and punish you for your base actions. My advisers daily call for your head on a pike and somehow in the middle of all of this I still reach out to stop a senseless war from happenning. Do what you must Chairman, but when your enemies come to wreak their vengence upon you do not expect me to intervene.
I have done more then I should have to end the comming war, when it comes as seems to be your wish, there will be nothing I can do to save you from the wrath of those you have offended.

Some may call me a coward for treating you with such equality, some may question my honour for being so willing to break a non aggression pact, but none can doubt that I have given you far more then others would have given you.
Make peace with Burgundy or your people will suffer for your pride.

A letter arrives bearing the great seal of the Hapsburgs:
Noble King of Hungary,
I am greatly troubled by the war which ravages your lands.
I cannot in good faith stand aside and watch your country tear itself apart. Therefore if you ask for it my armies will join yours in the field and conquer this rebellius rabble. The noble Houses should support each other and to this end I will support the house of Luxembourg the rightful rulers of Hungary.
My army stands ready to march to your aid you need but ask for it and we shall lend our strength to yours.

Cardinal Jan Von Webber enters a warm fur cloak covering his cardinals robes. A second figure enters dressed in the robes of an Archbishop solemnly following the impressive Cardinal into the Palace.
Kneeling before the Papal throne Von Webber addressed the Pope:
" Holy Father please forgive us for our terrible delay. We had some difficulties on our journey and were quite unable to make contact with you. We set out to travel through Helvetia but the weather and relations with Austria deteriorated trapping us in tiny villages until the passes were clear.
We have been punished for our pride by getting horribly lost during our trek here.
Allow me to introduce myself and my good companion.
I am Jan von Webber the Archbishop of Vienna and Cardinal for Austria.
My companion is Karl Vandersson Archbishop of Tirol.
We have come as obediant sons to the Mother Church to ensure the people of Austria do not endanger their souls through lack of guidance and vice.
I pray I do not sound too foolish Holy Father but I am weary from the journey here and desire rest that I may put the gifts our Lord in Heaven gave me to good use.

A letter arrives for the Pope:

"His Holiness, Jean Luke, Bishop of Roma,

Holy Father, I have just received word of the Papal Decree, requiring my services in Roma indefinately. As your Holiness is aware, the Kingdom of England is only permitted to have one Cardinal at any given time. Holiness, as my duties are also as the Metropolitan of London and Archbishop of Canterbury, I feel that I can not fulfill my duties in England, should I be required to spend my full time in the Vatican. My duties in England would not be able to be handled properly by my juniors, just as no one would ask His Holiness to leave the Papal responsibities to a bishop. I ask you, Holy Father, perhaps you would accept an Archbishop to represent England at the Vatican, or perhaps permit another Cardinal to be promoted? I thank you for your patience your Holiness."

By his own hand at Canterbury,

Richard Bourchier
Archbishop of Canterbury
Metropolitan of London
