The Patirach stands quiet worried;

"These are indeed dark times. As to the man representing the Golden Horde, I desire not a war against the muslims, but a war to free the Orthodox nations. While the Catholics and the muslims are free to rule themselves, the majority of Orthodox nations are still tied to other rulers.

While I do not doubt your word that peoples of the Orthodox faith are treated farily in the muslim realms, I also hope that you will understand that I do not wish for the muslims to be mistreated either.

As to the man from the Ottoman Empire. My people did not look towards me to ease their pain but to give them support in their war. And I did it. I realize that the Suzdal has now become the target for aggresion, but that was decided by Novograd and Muscovy. I have taken pitty on the Kniaz of Suzdal and not issued the anthema against him that Novograd and Muscovy wanted.

I only wish for the freedom of all Orthodox peoples. But I do not want to see the muslim lands destroyed. It is unfortunate that this situation has boiled down into a war of this size, and I can only hope that peoples of all nations involved will escape with their lives.

As to the man from Pskov. I am extatic that the Golden Horde was generious enough to hand over those two provinces. But I fear that will cause more strife with Novograd. I pray for Pskov's saftey."

Sergius from Moskva stands and bows before the Patriarch and kisses his hand and speaks.

Your holyness, the Moslems in the Golden Horde hide behind the cloak of rightesneous, with their own lies. Moscovite and Novgordite spies have seen this with their own eyes. Our peoples in Moskva has suffered countless raids from these lands. It is NOT just! And the man representing the Orthodox religion in those lands is obviously corrupted by the Horde's pocket!I am too saddended that war had to come, and I share views of you. I am greatly emotional about the Suzdal sitiuation, however on behalf of my sender the Princess, I must say that it was just. The Horde's men are not what they once were...they kill innocent people's and destroy Russian culture and religion...there are millions of faithful followers in the lands that are angered with the Mongolian rule, and it is time for them to look for freedom to pratice as they please! The heretical Horde hides behind a cloth of denial and lies. They haven't got any mercy for any people's other than their own. Take a look at their ally Sibir for example. Sibir shows the truth of the Mongolian aggression that has plagued the now concealed Orthodox faith in the my lands of Russia...for centuries...and now they fear for we have a few advantages, and thus hide behind lies and deceat of Satan...please do not lose faith in us...

Sergius kisses his hand and sits down.

The muslim nations have always, since the death of Muhammed, have one or more Caliphs at the same time in history. They have been located at varius places such as Cairo, Bagdad, Constantinople etc. For game purposes I think an election would be ok, but for now the Golden horde has the title of Caliph and Im fine with that.

The Rheinland Palatinate

I'd like to guide the Rheinland Palatinate, unless someone's already reserved it.

I will need a day or two to put together my court threads though...or should I start with a bare court and fill it in later?

Danke

But until the collapse of the Abbasids in the 13th century under Seljuk pressure, there was always one Caliph recognized by 95% of the Muslim world. Also, no one opposed Abu Bakr or Umar, although by Uthman things have gotten pretty iffy.

Right, but for game purposes I think the muslim nations always should have a Caliph and just one. All muslim nations should be able to propose a Caliph and cast a vote when the present Caliph dies. The nation that wins the election can have the +1 morale bonus to its forces as the Caliph is a resident in that nation.

Hieromonk Polycarp receives a blessing from the Patriarch, and says,

"Holy Father, it has come to our attention that our "Orthodox" brothers in Moskva and Novgorod seek the help of Rome in their war against Suzdal. Now that your wisdom has dashed their hopes of a holy war upon Suzdal, they turn to the Bishop of Rome for sanction! Is this insult to Orthodoxy to be permitted?"

Dmitri looks at the Muscovite.

"And even if the scandalous lies of aggression you spout were true, what excuse does that give Moscow and the former Prince of Novgorod to plot war against their brother Russians? Was not the entire grievance with Suzdal amplified beyond belief so that those two nations could prey on the lone one. And then to act so indignant when the Great Khan came to aid his vassal, as any loyal and wise king would! It's almost Christian!"

"Moreover, to compare the Sibir to the Golden Horde is ludicrous. The Sibir have been out on the steppe, playing the role of Mongol horsemen since old times. The Golden Horde has lived among the Russian people since before our grandparents were born. Truly, they are as much children of Mother Russia as any of us who have lived there for uncounted generations. They just require a helping hand to teach them the true path. In this, their openness works for us, and we would be remiss not to attempt to show them the light. But all our brothers to the North have done is attempt to decieve them and use them as pawns, just as they did Suzdal. No wonder there is war across the north now. No wonder."

A letter arrives in the Kremlin, born by a messenger in the livery of the Grand Prince of Pskov.

Misguided ruler of Muscowy,

Your words grate heavily on my senses. I cannot fathom what desperation makes you write as you do. Perhaps in that desperation, your true feelings finally make themselves apparent.

I have listened to you and your husband belittle my realm and I, insult my cousin, the Kniaz of Suzdal repeatedly, advocate war for no other reason than greed, and even dare to patronize me and question my judgement! How dare you!? I have even heard rumors that you run to all the Catholic powers of Europe, begging for help, and even hailing the Bishop of Rome in the same way you would our beloved Patriarch.

I can see now that you and your husband only wish to amplify your own power, though you cloak your desires and display your feminine wiles as opposed to his a word is crossed out blunt displays of emotion. I only wish the best for Rus, and thus cannot responsibly leave you and your husband in power. Therefore it is with a sorrowful and heavy heart that I must declare a state of war between your realms and mine.

By his own hand at Pskov,

Fedor I

Grand Prince of Pskov, Prince of Novgorod and of Olonets

Nice try, But I dont think it works that way, look at your series of events one last time. If you bought an army before the turn ended so you could get a regenerated econ pnt before you declare war, you forget that you entered the new turn at peace, by which you lose your newly purchased army pnt anyways;)
