My dear Duke of Burgundy, it is the joy of my heart to see you again. I trust that you and your family are well? Your grandfather was a dear friend of mine, and the death of your father has grieved me greatly. I hope our duchies may both grow strong and virtuous. One thing that grieves me, it seems that all of your wall hangings are not put up yet (OOC: is it just me, or did you link to images instead of embedding them, forgive me if that was your intention), but nevertheless, I wish you the most goodwill I can afford.

Yours Truly,
John V of Brittany.

Head of State
Alfons V "El Magnànim" (The Magnanimous), Count of Barcelona, King of Aragon, Mallorca, Valencia, the Two Sicilies, Corsica and Sardinia by the Grace of God

Alfons23%20copia.jpg

- Pere Miquel Carbonell. Chronicles of Spain

What is more unnatural and offensive, that like a father who does not take care of his son, a kingdom has to part without his King?

- Miquel Casadevall, Accounts of the Catalan Courts

King Alfons was crowned at the age of 22 after the sudden death of his father Fernando el d'Antequera, first king of the Trastámara line in Aragon. Fascinated by the spirit and the works of the Renaissance, his look has always been set on the lands of Italy, for the dismay of his abandoned wife, which carries the burden of ruling the Iberian Realms. He speaks five different languages, being those Castillian, Catalan, French, Latin and Italian, and he is even now learning Greek. His divise, and open book with the motto Vir sapiens dominabitur astris, "Wise men will dominate the stars".

Royal Family

Maria of Castilla, wife, Queen of Aragon, sister to the King of Castilla
Joan of Navarra, brother, Duke of Peñafiel, Gandia and Montblanc, Heir to the Kingdom of Navarra
Joan of Castilla, cousin, King of Castilla
Elionor of Aragon, sister, bethrotred to the Duke of Bedford
Maria of Aragon, sister
Pere of Aragon, brother, Duke of Noto
Enric of Aragon, brother, Duke of Villena and Count of Empúries, Albuquerque and Ledesma

Other personalities

Alfons de Borja i Cabanilles
The very same fra Vicenç Ferrer once said to his parents that his voluntarious child would reach far in the love of God. Now, at 41 years old, he is the Archbishop of València and Cardinal of the Roman Church. He is held in much esteem by the gracious King, who has also nominated him vicechancellor of in regards to the Italian possessions of the Crown. His family was a noble one, and following the advice of the confessor of the Pope, he has studied and later taught as canon of Lleida until the King brought him under his service as personal secretary in 1416.

Ausiàs Marc
Well known is the taste of the King for the arts, and have no doubt that Ausiàs Marc is the greatest poet ever coming from the lands of the Crown since the glorious days where the pennant of Barcelona held high in the castles of la Provença. Descendant of a Valencian noble family, he holds the rank of knight, and has a small state near Valencia.

Joanot Martorell
One of the most valiant, yet some of his enemies would call him a violent fool, knights at service of the Crown. Long time brother in arms of King Alfons, he has now been gifted with the embassy of the Crown to England. Well known is the love of Joanot for these lands, and his mastery of the language which is there spoken, proof of that is that he always carries a copy of Guy of Warwick, his favorite novel, which he is trying to translate to Catalan vernacular. He keeps a close relationship with Ausiàs March with whom share a love for the written word, which is common to the monarch.

The General Courts

CortsCatalanesQuote.jpg

The Crown of Aragon is a parlamentarian monarchy. All laws adressing taxation are to be approved by the parliament, where Nobility, Clergy and Peasantry are equally represented. Currently, there are two political parties in Barcelona.

La Busca (The splinter): The party of the impoverished farmers and liberated serfs.
La Biga (The balk): The party of the rich merchants and great landowners of Barcelona.

Currently, La Biga controls the Parliament.

Important offices held inside the Crown.

Conseller en Cap (Head Counselor)
The Head Counselor is the head of the Council of Barcelona that rules the city. Its power is great, and his influence on the politics of the Crown not to be disregarded.

Galcerà de Requesens is the current Head Counselor of Barcelona.

Protonotari (Protonotary)
A charge often occupied by a man of the utmost trust of the King, he reads the petitions and proclamations of the King to the Courts. And he is the only one that can approach his throne during the celebration of the Courts.

Bernat Metge is the current Protonotary

Lloctinent General (General Lieutenant)
The General lieutenant is the king where the King is absent. He has power to legislate and negotiate in his name inside the boundaries of the Principate of Catalonia only. Traditionally, the heir to the throne is trusted this office.

Currently Joan de Navarra, brother to the king and Maria de Castella, wife to the King share the responsibilities when the King is not at Barcelona.

Royal Chancellery

CancelleriaReial2.jpg

- Ramon Muntaner Chronicles of the reign of Peter the Great

The Crown of Aragon is itself a commonwealth of kingdoms united to stand their common foes, and thus the Crown promotes friendship and union between the christian realms. The Royal Chancellery is the office where all the foreign policy is conducted.

Bernat Metge, and Pere de Floixà i Llúria are the current chancellors of the Crown of Aragon.

Foreign Ambassadors presently at Barcelona:

Martí Garcés representing The Knights of St. John
NOTE: Garcés doesn't reside at Barcelona, but in a Priory at Saragossa

José Dalever representing Naples
Count Álvarez de Lorenzana representing Castilla-León
Piero Guarisco representing Genoa

Kingdom of England

I was not angry since I came to France
Until this instant. Take a trumpet, herald;
Ride thou unto the horsemen on yon hill:
If they will fight with us, bid them come down,
Or void the field; they do offend our sight:
If they'll do neither, we will come to them,
And make them skirr away, as swift as stones
Enforced from the old Assyrian slings:
Besides, we'll cut the throats of those we have,
And not a man of them that we shall take
Shall taste our mercy. Go and tell them so.

Henry V
Act 4, Scene 7

Slowly the ship pulls within sight of land. Your voyage has been peaceful, but the unfamiliar, slightly stinging, salt air along with the rolling of your vessel has you longing for land. Ah, there it is, beautiful London! The boisterous activity at the ports is quite overwhelming to you, as this growing city is quite different than your rural manor house at home. Soon you arrive at the home of English royalty since the days of William the Conqueror.

The Knights have resided on Rhodes since the days of the Grand-Master Fulk de Villaret, the beginning of the 14th century. Previous homes were the island of Cyprus and the holy city of Jerusalem, where the order was founded in 1099.

The order makes no secret of its intent, set down by its first Grand-Master Raymond du Puy, to "take the sword in hand for the extermination of the Mohammedians and of all who abandon the true religion."

The order is forbidden to interfere in struggles between Christian princes.

Diplomacy

The Order has large holdings in every land in Europe; to watch over them and collect income, there is a preceptor in charge of the holdings of the Knights in each of the Tongues.

The preceptors also function as emmissaries to the courts of the lands in their tongue, and are also in charge of recruitment in their lands.

Preceptor of Provence: Guerin de Montaque, Priory at Saint-Gilles
Preceptor of Auvergne: William de Chateauneuf, Priory at Olloix
Preceptor of France: Reynald de Vichiers, Grand Priory at Paris
Preceptor of Italy: Peter de Monte, Grand Priory at Rome
Preceptor of Aragon: Martin Garces, Priory at Saragossa
Preceptor of Germany: Ferdinand Daps, Grand Priory at Prague
Preceptor of England: Robert Fitz William, Priory at Clerkenwell (London)

Diplomacy with the Orthodox nations is handled as needed by Robert de Julliac

News:

The Council will reconvene in Jerusalem upon the arrival of the Grand Marshal from Rhodes. The status of Rhodes is unclear; it has temperarily been put under the command of one Gerard Josbert.

Nation bid reminder to the main men.

Please......lords of the ethreal, masters of universes, and dare I say chosen ones most divine.

Navarre needs the guidance of a man rugged like it's mountains, fiery like it's people, and with the eternal staying power of It's bulls and Rams!

I am such a man!

My pious modesty might fit the pope better though;)

Who knows?.....only the omnipotent mighty mod may rule here.

Papal Elections

PAPAL ELECTIONS

Pape.jpg

It has been some years since the death of His Holiness, Gregory XII. The Vatican is in a state of near chaos; this is an election quite unlike any other.

With France ablaze with war, Europe is crying out for clear and strong leadership; and while petty kings and princes send thousands of good men to their deaths due to their own territorial ambitions, it is a more spiritual kind of leadership the humble man seeks out.

With the state of the Catholic church in crisis, the assembled concile is in mutual agreement that a decision regarding Gregory's successor is vital and needs to be arrived upon soon. Thus, they have agreed that a simple majority is all that is required to elect their new Papa.

May the candidates step forward.

Distribution of Cardinals:
The following nations have the following number of votes. Only these nations may vote.

6 from Papal States,
1 from Genoa,
1 from Naples,
1 from Milan,
1 from Florence,
1 from Venice,
1 from England,
1 from France,
1 from Burgundy,
1 from Austria,
1 from Bohemia,
1 from Cologne,
1 from Mainz,
1 from Castille,
1 from Aragon,
1 from Portugal,
1 from Denmark,
1 from Poland.

Elections will end in three months' time (ooc: midnight next Sunday (27th Jan)).

CANDIDATES AND VOTES CAST
Cardinal Louis-Alphonse Boivin (Fra)
-WITHDRAWN-
Cardinal Petr (Boh) 4 (Gen, Boh, Aus, Eng)
Giovanni Marcelli (Pap) -WITHDRAWN-

"To the false murderous imposter claiming the title of King of France which is rightfully that of the House of Plantagenet,

As agreed in the Treaty of Bretigny in the year of our Lord 1360, France had ceded the whole fo the old Aquitaine and, in northern France, Ponthiew, Calais, and Guines if full to sovereignty to England. As Guyenne still lies in French hands, your fulfillment of this treaty almost eighty years past, is still not met.

France has continued to harrass English interests through alliances with the Scots, whom were encouraged to strike at our lands in Northumberland, and through support of the Welsh rebellion led by Owen Glendower. Again the French have attacked us, renewing open conflict which continues to this day, in the year of our Lord 1405 when your Constable of France Charles d'Albret foolishly ook towns in Saintonge and Perigord.

This month of January, I have taken Rouen, the Pays de Caux and the Vexin from French hands. As I am the rightful heir to the Crown of France through the bloodline of my grandfather, Edward III who was daughter to Isabella: sister of CHarles IV and daughter of Philip IV, I demand that France lay down her arms and recognize their rightful King of France, Henry V of England.

By his own hand at Rouen,

Welcome to the Royal Court of Sweden.
Here, the Union Counsel, will recieve your diplomats in the Royal Swedish Castle.

(OOC:The Union counsel is entirely fictional, as Sweden was ruled by the King of Denmark. One reason I chose this is that's what the Swedish monarch is called in Eu2, and that it will fit my game strategy ;)

Royal Court of Hungary

This is the court of the Kingdom of Hungary.

Hungary is currently ruled by Sigismund from the house of Luxembourg.

Hungary is at civil war

The cause of the civil war is the rule of the house of Luxembourg. The hungarian nobles have initiated an uprising and have ensured the support of a good part of the armed forces. Word is that the ruthenians and hungarians support the nobles, while the romanian part of the population still supports the rule of Sigismund.

Letter from England

His Highness, John V of Brittany,

Trusted ally, the French campaign continues to rage. As an ally, I am indeed interested in your actions during this war. As you know, this month my Invasion Army has proved victorious and I have taken Rouen, the Pays de Caux, and the Vexin. Still, this pretender, Charles VI continues to refute my rightful claim to the throne. I await your response.
