Khanate Court of the Uzbek Horde

Khanate Court of the Uzbek Horde

uzbek.gif

The Uzbeks, a highly nomadic nationality of semi-Mongols, carved out a large amount of territory from the Timurid Empire in the late 14th century. An extremely decentralized nation, it is led by a few dozen Khans ruling over their tribes, and a Khan that more or less leads them all. However, the Khan's influence is fragile, at best.

The Great Khan Dawlat rules from the Great Hall, in the Uzbek heartland. It is a modest hall, but a giant structure in the rather backwards Uzbek Horde.

Leaders of the Horde

uzbek.gif

Dawlat Khan, Great Khan of the Uzbek Horde. He was Khan of a minor tribe, the Jurin. Dawlat finally united the warring tribes through a combination of cunning, wit, and his superior combat knowledge. Now, he is becoming a well respected and important member of the Mongol Empire, and leading the Uzbek tribes to its rightful place as a great nation on Allah's earth.

Dostum_011128_nh.jpg

Dostum Khan, Khan of the Hayiisak Tribe. He is an old friend of Dawlat, and one of his main supporters. He is in charge of domestic affairs when Dawlat is away, and in charge of the Immortals, the elite fighting force that Dawlat suggested after learning about the Mamelukes and Janissaries in the west. Dostum is himself a great, old warrior, and a force to be reckoned with.

mon.JPG

Ravshan Khan, Khan of the Barlas Tribe. He is perhaps the most intellectual man in all of the Uzbek Horde. His knowledge and learning led him to try to reform the Uzbek Horde's military structure. He was able to learn many strategies from reading accounts of Genghis' conquest of the world and several European strategies from the few books that have made their way east.

Mongol.warrior.jpeg

Bolalor Khan, Khan of the Lakai Tribe. Bolalor recently become Khan of his tribe after his father died. Bolalor is quickly becoming a rising star in the Uzbek Horde. He is not quite as supportive of Dawlat as the rest of the Inner Circle, but Bolalor does not aspire to the position of Great Khan, and is content merely to gain great victories for himself and the Lakai tribe.

The Military of the Horde

Mongol.warrior2.jpeg

The Uzbek Horde is made up of several units.

The traditional Horseman, who follow in the ways of their elders. Lightly armored, but heavily armed and skilled horsemen, able to ride 100 miles in a single day and fight when they reach their destination. Superbly led and trained, these horsemen live for battle. Man for man, Mongol horsemen of all tribes are more effective than any other soldier.

The infantry, a rather new invention among the Uzbeks. They use a combination of the tradition Mongol bow, a short, 6 foot spear, and a sword. They usually fire the bow, killing scores of enemies, hurl their spear when they come into throwing range, then charge with their sword and kill the survivors.

The Immortals, the newest type of soldier in the army. These are imported Christian slaves, like the Mamelukes of Egypt and the Janisarries of the Ottomans. Fanatical in their new Muslim faith, they would wade through Hell itself to kill any infidel that opposes them.

As Dawlat Khan glances at the realm that has just recently been placed under his influence, the power of the Mongols strikes him and he is proud to be a part of their empire. As he continues his glance over the grassy horizon, where the setting sun's crimson rays spread over the distinct green steppes, he notices a curious, black speck. After a few moments the speck appears to have grown limbs and a head, and after a few more, an angry and restless face. The black of the specks robes fade into a light blue tint. The auburn stallion gallops towards the the yurt of Dawlat Khan at full speed, completely disregarding the heavy-set man who is her unfortunate burden. The man reigns the stallion in front of the yurt of the Khan, and, noticing that the Khan stands outside, the Khazak warrior doesn't bother to dismount. He takes a polite bow while still on his horse and tells newly appointed Dawlat Khan:

Great Khan of the Uzbeks,

I am a warrior of Janibek Khan of the Khazak Horde and have come to call you and your troops to arms. Now is not the time for petty diplomatic greetings or embassador exchanges so I will not burden you with either. The Jihad against the west has begun and I call you and your troops into battle for the glory of almighty Allah and for the greatness of the Mongolian Confederation. Great Bars Khan of the Golden Horde has called us all to Constantinople to elect a Khanan for all of the Mongolia. If you wish, you may join us in Constantinople before we journey into the depth of war. The time has come, please join us soon!

The unidentified Khazak turns his horse and gallops into war as quickly as his steed can carry him.

Dostum Khan, appointed leader of the Uzbek Horde while Dawlat Khan is tending to Mongol Empire business, paces back and forth in the Great Hall.

"Dostum Khan, our men have captured several Christian traders and explorers within our lands. We believe them be spies. What shall we do with them?" An aide asks.

Torture...........

Dostum Khan looks at the aide.

"Torture them, find out what tribe they are. After that, perhaps we could execute them and send them back to their tribe as an example of what Mongols do to infidels and apostates before Allah."

The aide smiles slightly, and then heads to the camp where the prisoners are held.

Three days later

The aide returns to the Great Hall, and approaches Dostum Khan.

"We have found out where these infidels are from. There is a Portugese.. where Portugal is, I know not. The Portugese are the minor tribe who foolishly declared war on the Golden Horde. An...... Italian? He seems to be an infidel churchman. The villagers in the area where he was captured say he was a missionary to their Caliph. There are also men from tribes called the "German", "French", and "English".

Dostum Khan then rides off to inspect the prisoners. Arriving at the camp, he looks at the beaten, bruised prisoners. He yells at them, "ACCEPT ALLAH AND YOU WILL BE SPARED! IF YOU DO NOT CONVERT, YOU WILL BE SLAYED!!"

The prisoners look at Dostum Khan dumbly, as they do not understand Mongol.

Dostum Khan then sneers. "Behead them. Send them back to their tribes as a message."

Dostum Khan then nods at the soldiers, who begin their work.

A letter from Dawlat Khan

Riding hard and fast, a messenger from Constantinople arrives in Uzbek territory. As he rides, he shouts news of the jihad, and a call to arms is sounded. A massive army of tribesmen is quickly assembled, and war levies are raised to support the Golden Horde.

A few days after that, the courier arrives in the Great Hall, and delivers a message to the awaiting Khans.

"Khans of the Uzbek Horde! The time of victory is now at hand. Already the infidels shout their falsehood at us, and think to degrade our people with their insults. This cannot stand with Mongols! Send the horde immediately to Constantinople to begin the great battle for Allah! The Nogai, Sibir, Khazaks, Timurids, and Golden Horde are already on the move; we must move to support our brothers.

For Victory,

-Dawlat Khan
"

The assembled Khans smile in glee, as they know the time for conquest is once again at hand, and how the entire world will tremble upon hearing the news the Horde is moving.

"Dostum Khan, the Lakai tribe will set out immediately! We have 6000 horsemen, ready to be sent! Our forces will ride hard and fast in victory!" Bolalor Khan annouces.

Dostum Khan nods his approval. "May Allah bless you in the war against the Great Satan, Bolalor Khan. Show no mercy to the infidels."

With that, Bolalor Khan rushes out of the room, to the lands of the Lakai tribe.

Ravshan Khan then stands. "My 5000 horsemen will go! We are fast riders. Our forces will strike hard and fast, and leave no infidel behind us! We have stockpiled arrows for years. Now, we will use them."

Dostum Khan then nods. Ravshan Khan then leaves, moving to the Barlas tribe.

Dostum Khan then addresses the remaining Khans, who lead the smaller tribes, with 2000 horsemen or less. "The rest of us will stay in our land, and await for the call for reinforcements. Train hard in the meantime. Be ready for the call."

The next day

Bolalor Khan and Ravshan Khan set out with their men, totaling 11000 together. The Uzbek Horde then sets out towards Constantinople, to join the 4000 of Dawlat Khan.

Formation of the Immortals

Dostum Khan appraised the new arrivals from the west. A large group of young, 10-14 year old Greeks, who had already begun to learn the combat skills, but not yet zealous in Orthodoxy. Yes, they would make very good future soldiers. And a group of 20 year old Muslim Greeks, fanatical in their devotion to Allah, and very skilled in fighting..

Dostum Khan then gave orders to several elders. Immediately, orders were given. And the Greeks began learning about Allah and War. And thus, the Immortals were created, the Mongol answer to the Janissaries and Mamelukes.

Fate of Iasi

10,000 worn, tired Moldovians arrive in Uzbek territory. They are immediately gifted to the tribes for their support in the war. Most of the young male children are sent to the camps, to train with the captured Greeks in the martial arts. The women are taken as prize brides by the wealthier Uzbeks, and the able-bodied men are put to work tending hashish and opium, for re-export to the west.

The nobles and surviving military leaders are interrogated about Polish, Lithuanian, and Moldovian military moves. Not much is learned from the interrogation, as the survivors are relatively low on the social order. After some roughing up, they too are sent to work in the fields. The priests were sent to talk to the Nestorian Patriarach, who wanted to talk with them about more civilized matters. After realizing that the Eastern churches had indeed spread, the Patriarch sent one of his own messengers to meet with him.

All of the gold, silver, and other rare metals were sold to raise funds for more soldiers and training. The religious artifacts were given to Nestorian churches and various Muslim mullahs, who then declared them artifacts of their own religion.

A messenger hands the Hessian slip of paper to Dawlat. His dour face brightening a little bit, he heads behind his yurt to relieve himself. The soiled paper is then returned to the Hessian messenger.

A letter arrives.

“Khan of the Uzbeks,

I write to you with hopes of establishing friendly relations between your fine people and the Mamelukes. It is with great joy I can reffer to the gloriful Kazans and the Timurids, as nations where the Mamelukes have succed to tie friendly connections with already. Now we wish to enlargen our realm of friends, especially now when this “Muslim league”, led by the Khan of Ak Koyunlu have been founded. You may be aware of that the Mamelukes has applied for observer status, until further notice, in that promising assembly. We hope that this will led to greater mutual understanding between shites and sunnites, so that we may find common goals and issues to unity under. I do hope you accept this letter of goodwill, with he same joy that I wrote it and that our nations may find issues where we can co-operate, in order to bring greater wealth to us all.

Written and signed by

Ahmed Abu Mazar, Grand vizer of Cairo”

A letter arrives to the Khan.

“Noble Khan,

It is with overwhelming joy we will recive a representative from your fine nation. We do hope that we may send a representative to your fine Court in return. I will let my Grand Vizier immediately get to work with the basics of a trade agreement, so that we maybe may sign one when your representative arrives here in Cairo. Until then, let the wrath of Allah strike down the heathens and bring victories to your men.

Written and signed by

Yusuf al-Zahiri, Sultan of the Mamelukes.”
