Khanate of Nogai

Khanate of Nogai

The Khan of the Nogay Horde, Ghazi Nuruz, rules over his people from his court in Emba. His ancestors have ruled from this palace over the Nogai people for many centuries. Only in the last century have the Nogai gained complete sovereignty of their lands, being recently separated from the Golden Horde.

History

The Nogai separated from the Golden Horde in the fourteenth century. Until the sixteenth century their nomadic pastures were located east of the Volga when they came under territorial pressure from Kalmyks and Russians. They came under the rule of the Crimean Tatars, and in the eighteenth century were finally pressured into the Caucasus region by Kuban Cossacks.

As the new Khan of the Nogai Horde settles down into his palace at Elba, he notices a white horse carrying a heavily-built man on her back. The man's clothing are of a glistening blue tint that, when reflecting the sun, made the strongest eyes shy away. Still, Ghazi Nuruz noticed the man's stern features and wondered who could be visiting him so early in his reign. He soon found his answer. The man rode up towards the magnificent palace of the Khan until he reached the gate at which point he showed the guards a few papers and was allowed to pass, leaving his beautiful stallion in the grassy steppes. The man soon appeared in the great hall of the newly appointed Khan of the Nogai Horde, Ghazi Nuruz, and bowed low. When he was allowed to rise he spoke the following words:

Great Khan of the Nogai Horde, Ghazi Nuruz,

The Magnificent and Honorable Khan of the Khazak Hordes, Janibek, has asked me to bring promises of peace and prosperity between our two realms to you. I am the Khan's loyal servant, Kelet, and would appreciate you very much if you would allow me to take up perminent residence here in the grassy steppes of Nogai as an ambassador of the Khazak Hordes.

The Khan also has asked me inform you of a meeting in Toblosk involving Bars Khan of the Golden Horde, Baraq Khan of Sibir, and Daluu Jambyn of the Timurs, and of course my great Khan Janibek. The meeting is addressing the issue of a united Mongolian Confederation. Your arrival at the throne is very timely... you are on time to witness and change Mongolian history as you wish. Please come to Baraq Khan's palace in Toblosk and meet with the other great Khans of Mongolia.

And in a final issue, we are glad that you have chosen the ways of Sunni Islam for your state. We suggest that you send an emissary to the Conclave of Devout Nations in distant Konya to establish your power as a Sunni leader. We need to show the Conclave that we Mongols can be just as strong in faith as any other Islamic nation. They are beginning to doubt this.

Once again, we hope for many years of peace and prosperity between our two neighboring realms. We hope this can begin with your sending of an emissary to Karsak as soon as possible.

Thank you for allowing me the audience, Great Khan Ghazi Nuruz of the Nogai Horde.

The solidly built man bows once again, his blue garments flashing in the sunlight that creeps through the window, and leaves the great hall of Ghazi Nuruz back towards his majestic white stallion...

An Altai messenger arrives in Emba, carrying a message from Siberia and it's chief, Baraq Khan. He salutes Ghâzî Nuruz the Siberian way, than leaves the Nogai Khanate. The letters is written in a Mongolian language, but for a Khan, there is no problem for that.

Nogai Khan Ghâzî Nuruz.

Bars Khan, of the Golden Horde, Janibek Khan, of the Khazak Horde, Dsaluu Jambyn, Khan of Timur and myself, Baraq Khan, Khan of Sibir are inviting you to join us in Tobolsk, capital of the Sibir Khanate, to discuss about the reunification of the Mongolian Empire. Your representation will be very appreciated, and would show a friendship to your Mongolian allies against the western heathens!

In hope for your coming to Tobolsk and for a quick answer
Baraq Khan, Khan of Sibir

Kelet approaches the ministers of the Nogai Horde with a dusty old letter. He tells them that he recieved it yesterday from a Khazak messenger that had come from Karsak. He was telling them this with an unusually joyful look upon his face. They wondered what it could say and asked to see it. Kelet drops it on the table in front of them. They examine it, making sure it has the seal of the Khan of Khazak, and, as they notice that it does, they become eager to open it. It opens and reveals a clear white sheet with the following words printed on it in the most beautiful Mongol calligraphy:

Great Ministers of the Khan of the Nogai Horde,

I, Janibek Khan, offer your Khan a very important proposition of friendship. I propose a marriage of our Khanates. My beautiful neice, Sube, has been searching for a husband for a long time and I have decided that a marriage between our two peoples would bring much peace and prosperity to both of our realms for many years. I know no details of the wedding yet, but we will speak about this later. I will invite you to Karsak to discuss further plans later...

Janibek, Khan of the Khazak Horde, currently in Toblosk

Kelet tells the ministers that the Khan wishes them to inform the Khan of the marriage only after he returs from Toblosk. He tells them that the khan believes that the meetings in Toblosk are very important and not should interupted with these types of matters...

A letter from Astrakhan

A letter begins circulating throughout the lands of Nogai.

"Fellow Mongol Khans! The Mongol Empire and all of its Khans are congregating in Astrakhan to begin our Grand Offensive to end the Christian threat once and for all. We are even now negotiating with the Khans of the Chagatai, and even the Khans in Mongolia and China. Send every horseman you can to Astrakhan. With the help of Allah, we can surely defeat these infidels.

Dawlat Khan of the Uzbek Horde"

Throughout the Great Empire of the Mongols, all is not well. A loose confedaration of nations who have fought each other at every turn, throughout history, are forced to fight together and the lesser Khans are unhappy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Advisor to the Khan of the Uzbek Horde, Mohhamed Al-Fayet, is sitting talking to his Khan,

"The people are not happy! We have carved out our empire from within the land of the Timurids and now we fight with them?"

"Do not preach to me about how to run the Horde, the lands to the West are richer than those of the Timurids."

"And will we ever rule any of those lands? The Golden Horde takes what it wants and is using us to get it. We have not gotten any of these fertile lands for our own, they have all come under the control of that fool Bars."

"Bars was a great leader, do not talk of him in such a manner."

"Rule how you will, but your people, and many of the lesser Khan's are not happy. There shall be revolts if you do nothing."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the lands of the Timurids, the people are not happy.

"Must we fight with our enemies?" Nadji Khan, a ruler of some lands in the North of the Empire shouts at a meeting of his warlords,

"I shall not lead you North to where ever those bastards want us to fight. The second we are gone the Uzbeks will spill over the border and take our women."

His warlords murmur their agreement at his words as Nadji continues:

"And if they are foolish enough to leave their lands, we shall take back that which was stolen from our fathers, that which is rightfully ours."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Further north in the lands known as Ust Urt, a Khan sits at his table in his butte and looks over his map of the Mongol lands. He sips at his wine as a plan slowly starts to form in his rather dim mind.

"Takeover." A simple word but it is one which he is obsessed with, he was close to becoming Khan of the Nogai Horde last time the leadership was to be decided but Ghâzî Nuruz was able to defeat him in battle decisively and stop him. But now all of Ghâzî's forces were out of the country and the Khan still had not sent his to help, it would be the perfect oppurtunity to take that which was so cruely denied of him before.

"Yes," he thought, opening another bottle, "This would be the perfect oppurtunity."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the lands of Sadrinsk in the lands of Siber, there is a village whose Shaman has chosen today to make a very important speech to his village.

"They have turned away, all of them! They have turned away from the gods of our fathers, from the Gods of Kubilai Genghis Khan Himself! Instead they worship The Devil from the West, the one they call Allah. We cannot live with this, we can not tolerate it! The spirits are angry and they will destroy our armies if we do nothing! The devil worshippers are using us as their own soldiers and have taken our money for the glory of their false religion! They fight for a cause that is not to be won, a Jihad we shall not stand for."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Throughout the Empire the people grow uneasy. Just as after the Great Khan's death the Mongols descended into internal bickering, Bars' death is doing the same thing. There are few men capable of holding together so many warring factions. The Butcher of Constantinople was one of them, but now that he is gone the inevitable is happening.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even further prevalent and insidious is the general disquiet from the Orthadox populous of these lands. Agitating and provoking the situation further. For themselves and the disorder of their masters they strive to avenge Constantinople.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some governments hear of it and respond.

In Karsak...

The Khazak Grand Council sits at one of the grand dining tables in the hall of the Khan. These tables have not seen a feast for almost a year and neither have the Grand Council seen peace and quiet in the realm of the Khazaks. Today though, was an especially rough day for the Council. The news of the peasant and Orthodox revolts have brought a great quiet upon the council. The leader of the Council, Nazar Jareg, friend of the Khan, has decided to call a meeting. Now he stands and addresses the council:

Noble leaders of the Khazak Grand Council,

Our Khan has been away for many months at war, waiting to be killed. After the revolts of today concerning the Mongol Confederation, the death of the Khan would bring such instablility towards the realm that we may not be able to hold it up. You all must understand that something must be done about our current terrible conditions. We are in no condition to fight a war, that is a sure thing.

At this statement, the whole council erupts with dissagreement...

Please, stop your bickering. With every battle, the Khan's chances of survival become slimmer. Our economy is in such a slump, that to pull it up will take many years of peace, but it cannot take any more of this war. The morale of our forces falters because of their families discontent with our governing at home. We are in a very disastrous and delicate situation.

I understand that pulling out of the Jihad will decrease the honor we recieve from all nations, especially our Mongol brothers, but we must first take care of our own people, the Khazaks. Then, when our people are content, we can work on things like honor.

My proposal is that we fully pull out of the Jihad declared by our brother, Bars Khan before it is too late. Our army is the smallest in Mongolia and doesn't have much to offer to our brothers even if we did stay and fight. Great and Wise Janibek will finally return to his home and all will slowly become well again. We must take this course of action... there is no other choice

Now, let us vote

All who support my proposal, raise your hands...

4 of the 10 members raise their hands reluctantly..

All who wish to stay in the war and keep fighting raise your hands...

3 of the 10 raise their hands, the hands of warriors...

And what about the rest of you? This is a matter of national import. All must vote! What of you three? What do you think?

Ihshak, the youngest in the council rises to speak...

Great leader,

Your proposal cannot come true. Our Mongol friends will be quick to turn against us if we leave the war. It matters not that we don't have many warriors, it is the concept that matters. We are stabbing our friends in the back, and this is anything but honorable.

I, however, do not support staying in the war fully either. I propose that great Janibek leave the front of battle and return here, to his palace where he belongs...

Nazar wonders at his proposal at first, scrathing his long beard. Then he responds:

Ihshak, you have much widom for your years. We will stay in the jihad as a sort of reserve force for the other Mongols just in case. Yes, 'tis a clever idea. We will withdraw all our forces to Karsak, and the Jihad shall be over for us until called upon by our friends. Also, if our friends decide to call us to a small and insignificant battle then they will be rejected. We will only come to the battles that Janibek deems it necessary to attend.

Congratulations friends! The war is over!

You there, messenger boy, call the Khan and his forces back home!

The young boy runs out of the court and prepares for a long jouney to tell his great Khan the news...
