The Archbishop glares with open hate at Herrman. "The Lord works in mysterious ways, Hermann of the Dragon. It is not my place to question why He allows Venice to be punished. But it is also not my place to question His commands to me. And you would mock me for bearing a sword? I am a solider of God and a shepherd of men. But at times, even the shepherd may have to slay wolves."

He looks at Gorlitz: "I will and do condemn the Doge of Venice, if he allows Christian souls to turn to the darkness. But the people of Venice should not have died at the hands of Ugo for that. If one criminal slays the innocent family of another criminal, does that someone make the first criminal innocent? Ugo is cut off from the Church. If the Doge is guilty of the same crimes, then cut him off also! But that is not a command I can give."

Herrman struggles to retain an outburst of laughter.

"So your casus belli will be that God ordered you to attack Hungary and... the Beast?"

Görlitz to the Archbishop.

"Your Grace, the treaty allowing noble Christians to be damned by conversion to the muslim heathens faith has been presented in front of this most noble assembly. It has also been presented to Rome. Unfortunately, even the Pope, or should I say the people counselling the Pope, don't come to the same conclusion as you. It is sad, really, for I would have hoped these Papal counsellors would have had at least treated the Doge of Venice with as much zeal as they did with the Lord of Hungary.

The members of this Diet, bearing the titles of Archbishops, have all been rebuffed in Roma when presenting these facts. This is the extent of what is going on in Rome. So, in the end, would we be surprised to see Dragons and beasts rising everywhere, when the Holy Roman Empire is the only one battling them? The guidance of the Church is not even there anymore. It is plagued by politics, such strong politics, that even His Holiness, a wise man, cannot control it.

Archbishop, in the absence of the Holy Church's powers over such attrocities that are going on in Corfu, with the damnation of THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of christians to false beliefs, will you help us and counsel us on the path to take? Surely your Grace can see that two beasts are fighting against each other, and thus peace is needed to stop this. And that we must go further than that, because even with peace, conversion in Venice will still happen.

The Duke, after his pronouncement, had sat down talking quietly with Schroder and keeping a keen ear to the debate. As the long stream of words continue, frustration mounts on his face and he begins turning crimson with anger. Finally, unable to contain it further, he slams his fist down on the table in front of him causing a well of ink to tip over and rises.

"Gentlemen and lords! You sit here and throw blame at each other like two year olds in front of their father for punishment, yet nothing changes. You stream out words like piss into a fouled pond, yet nothing changes. You shout threats and cite history, yet NOTHING changes. I say enough! I say more than enough!"

He takes a deep breath to bring himself under some amount of control, then proceeds onward.

"Some of you sit here and say Venetia is evil for its treaty allowing the Muslim heathens access to the souls of good Christians. This I agree with now as much as I have in the past, yet it is not an excuse for senseless slaughter of those same souls you would claim to be defending. Some of you say Hungary is heretical for its taking pay from those same Muslim countries. This I know less about, but should it be true then I can deem their action no less vile than those taken by the Doge. If both sides are fouled and tainted according to Christianity, what do we offer them? We offer them this chance for peace and repentance."

Albrecht calms even further, his face becoming a serene mask to more private thoughts.

"So let the peacemakers come forward instead of the debaters. Let us silence our vengeful tongues, for now, in the name of Christ the Dove, the great Pax Vobiscum to humanity. Let us not speak unless it is to offer true counsel and considered proposal which may end this conflict and seal us together once more into a unified and purified Christian Europe."

A grim smile stretches like the rictus of a skull across the cold face as he utters the last line.

"And should that fail, we may begin discussing the smiting of fig trees and the worthiness of burning a branch lest the whole die."

Stefano Lancetto speaks
"Gentlemen! What is all of this. What has Venezia done? That is so unholy? Did we not lead the fight to destroy the Horde when it invaded the Balkans. Together we have shown that jointly we can crush the heathens, and that Venice has always taken its religion over the money that it gains from trade with the Muslim nations. Now we refuse to allow them to practice in Venezia, we don't even let them pray.

It is rediculous your comments, for the very same trade that you all gain from, comes from Mediterannean trade. The silks, and spices, the ivory, and wool, the precious stones that adorn your villas and your princeses, all come from Muslim lands. We in return trade our goods in fair barter. This is a fair system that makes Europe rich. This trade has been gonig on for centuries and has nothing to do with religion. The second a crusade is called Venezia has always been the first to become engaged, and we always will. We are sons and daughters of God and follow him whenever we must. Doge Foscari himself led the armies of Christianity against the Hordes that invaded the Balkans.

The agreement we have with Muslim nations is something common, and understood. The church has understood that the economies of the Mediterannean are based on these trading agreements, and has accepted the fact that this trade is strictly necessary as long as it does not interfere or weaken its religious goals. Venezia stays within these boundaries willingly, and is placed in our current situation because Europe does not give us any other choice. It is easy for you to judge us for our contracts, but when a shipment of silk comes to your port, you require soldiers to control the mob that wishes to buy our goods. Bavaria, Bohemia, Hungary, Pommern, Gelre, Bremen, England, France, and especially Burgundy, have all gained from our trade contracts. Now to simply cut off the hand that feeds you is rediculous. If there is something that bothers you about the contract please state so and the Doge will take it into account, next time he recreates a contract.

I'd also like to point out that the Ottomans declared war on Christian lands not too long ago, they have broken their contract with us, and yet Europe is willing to do nothing to help Venezia and Aragon with the Muslims, yet you expect us not to create these contracts to keep these nations complacent, and friendly. Until Europe as a whole is ready to destroy all the Muslims, under no circumstance will Venezia stop trading with them. It is that simple.

Now the real issues are those of the unholy.

-Ugo has been excommunicated, and proven a heretic.
-His armies are made up of schismatics who, pilliage, rape, and burn the holy city of St. Mark.
-The Muslims fund the very armies that tear through the holy city.

That is right the Muslims fund the armies that battle Venezia, that destroyed Venezia. So please know the facts before you speak.

Stefano Lancetto speaks
"Since Gorlitz has shown that he knows nothing of what goes on in Corfu, he should be aware, of a few things, firstly currently NO Muslims are allowed to practice in Corfu, for a few reasons. Firstly Pope has demanded that the practice be stopped. Venezia listened.

Initially the idea was to keep peace between the Muslim world and the Christian world, to further trade since it was a guarantee that Europe would not aid Venezia if war did break out. Europe has shown its weakness of heart and character before, and we do not trust its vigor or lack there of concerning Crusades to the Balkans or beyond. So the Doge decided a trade. Venezia at the time would allow Muslims to pray in Corfu, no Muslim missionaries were allowed, no Muslim churches were allowed. In trade Venezia would be allowed to have Catholics, Christians practice in Alexandria and in Cairo, and the lands around it. They would be allowed to even pray in the home of the Sultan himself. This we saw as a positive step for Christianity, to first show the Muslims the one true faith. Hopefully in experiencing it first hand, the Muslims would convert. Now Christian missionaries were immediately sent to Corfu to convert these Muslims, and make sure the plague that is the Muslim faith, did not spread. All reports record that these missionaries were successful in converting a decent percentage of the Muslim population.

Now secondly, Venezia does not own Corfu any longer, we are only allowed to trade in its port freely. Now I would recommend you know your facts gentlemen before you begin to slander our good name.

Now the real issues are those of the unholy. The heretics among us, before we cleanse the rest of the world.

Ladislav and Rozmberk exchange glances after Albrecht speaks. von Dohna carries papers over to the envoy, who responds: "Your Lordship, both myself and my liege have heard your words. We desire peace, but not at the expense of duty. Thus His Majesty upholds the Crown Law of Hungary and accepts final and full responsibility for the conduct of our campaign, including the affairs of the occuppied territories."

"To demonstrate our desire for a just and lasting piece, herr Herrman and I have composed suitable articles. I do wish to note, however, that not an ounce of heathen gold funds the armies of the Dual Monarchy."
Rozmberk began to read:

"The Peace of St. Stephen, as decreed by the Diet of Hungary-- starts off well, doesn't it?

"The sin of this war lies on the head of the Republic of Venice, its Senate and its Doge. Quite fitting, considering how Venice began all this with untoward aggression toward Serbia, to which Hungary holds rightful title."

Concerning Hungary
Venice shall hand the province of Dalmatia (Dalmatia and Istria) over to Hungary. Including all cities and islands on and along the coast. This includes Pola, Spalato, Zara, Fiume, Trau, Sebenico, Zengg, Mitterberg, Rovigno, Gorizia, Gradisca, Ronchi Monfalcone and Trieste.

The border between the Republic of Venice shall forever more be the river of Isonzo.

Venice shall grant Hungary and Bohemia unrestricted Right of Passage.

Venice and Hungary shall enter a mutual five year non-aggression treaty. All alliances with foreign realms shall be ended. In that said time period, Venice shall not be allowed to ally with any foreign nation or engaged in foreign matters without the permission of the Diet in Buda.

Venice shall never aid an enemy of Hungary. Venice shall never incite unrest within Hungary or among its allies.

Venice shall never slander the good name of Hungary. Venice shall cherish and appreciate the great amount of forgiveness that Hungary with this peace shows towards Venice.

The Senate of Venice shall give the Diet of Hungary a public apology for having conspired against their realm.

Lord Palatine Ugo shall receive a personal apology from Doge Francesco Foscari for having conspired to remove his crown from his head with force and the attempt to grab land from noble Hungary.

King Ladislavus Rex shall receive a personal apology from Doge Francesco Foscari for the insults he has uttered against the noble king and problems he has caused for Bohemia.

Should the Venetians decide to change their government into a more friendly composition, no apologies are needed. The fault shall lie fully with the old regime.

Venice shall pay vassal's tribute to Hungary for 10 years, or until the Diet finds Venice sufficiently friendly towards the merciful realm of Hungary.
(Venice effectively becomes a vassal of Hungary for 10 years)

Concerning Moldavia
Venice shall hand over the province of Dobrudja to Moldavia.

Concerning the Mohammedans
Venice shall never allow the perverted teachings of the Mohammedans to be spread on its possessions. Nor shall they tolerate any Mohemmedans on its soil. All agreements of such shall be cancelled immediately and all Mohammedans be expelled.

Venice shall never sell weapons or materials of military value to the Mohammedans. Nor shall they supply the Mohammedans with know-how on how to manufacture items of war. Venice shall also not use middlemen to get around this article. Venice shall never aid the Mohammedans in any way, militarily, economically or diplomatically. All agreements of such shall be cancelled immediately and trade with the Muslims only permissible with the consent of the Diet of Hungary.

Concerning Bulgaria and Macedonia
It is a grave burden to live under the oppressive rule of Venice. Therefore, Venice shall release Bulgaria and Macedonia from the vassalage.

Should Venice ever violate any of these articles, Hungary and its allies have all rights to once more enforce the Peace of St. Stephen upon Venice. Thus cancelling the non-aggression treaty until order is restored in the region.

The days of the signing of this agreement shall be a days of celebration in both realms.

Signed:

Ugo
King of Croatia
Lord Palatine of Hungary
Overlord of Wallachia
Palatine of Transylvania
Marshal of Veneto

Ladislav,
Lord of the Kingdom of Bohemia
King of Hungary, Serbia, and Dalmatia
Duke of Austria
Prince-Elector of the Empire

(Some one hundred Hungarian nobles have signed and sealed the agreement)

Those whose signature should be signed here:
- The Count Palatine
- The Voivode of Moldavia
- The Palatine of Transylvania
- The Doge of Venice

Görlitz listens to Lancetto and answers to the Diet.

"My Lords. The first part of Herr Lancetto speach is quite similar to the previous Doge of Genoa's words in this assembly. And for that, his fate was quite clear. The fact that we have somehow benefits from Venetian trades doesn't allow Venenice to convert souls to the Muslim faith.

The fact that you have crushed muslims is unimportant when you considered what your doge is allowing. Kill a muslim, he'll die and be damned. Allow a Christian to convert to islam and he is damned.

Your issues are non-issues, as explained previously. We are talking about peace, and mediation. Not about what your Doge has brought to himself.

Let us remember that Venice would be standing today have it not been from your Doge unanswering the Hungary call for battle. It would still be glorious, not destroyed.

So what will it be? Your non-issues, or peace?"

Venezia is not an Imperial nation to be bound by your rules. We are only bound by those of the Pope. We have followed their order competely. They allow trade but do not accept Muslim prayer in Corfu. We have complied. Now back to the issue that you wish to ignore.

Görlitz to Lancetto.

"I do not know if the conversions are still being allowed. I wouldn't dare go in these parts. But if you say that past wrongdoings shouldn't be an issue anymore, I would then believe that the following issues are of no concern anymore:

-Ugo has been excommunicated, and proven a heretic.
-His armies are made up of schismatics who, pilliage, rape, and burn the holy city of St. Mark.
-The Muslims fund the very armies that tear through the holy city.

The three of them are now over. Ugo was excommunicated. Venice is destroyed. The Muslim monies were given.

So what do you want to discuss?

I do not know.

One thing I do know, is that, as you say, Venezia is imperial, and only answers to the Church.

So why then, Herr Lancetto, are you still here?

"Issues need to be discussed because none of you do anything to change the current situation. None of you stand for the Church, infact you spit in its face by continuing to support Ugo. You Gorlitz support Ugo. You accept his destruction of Venezia and champion it. You accept that he uses Muslim monies to destroy the lives of thousands of Christians, and YOU Gorlitz do nothing. The issue gentlemen is what you will do to stop Hungary, for currently you do nothing, only weakening the Church. You can not ignore that

-Ugo has been excommunicated, and proven a heretic.
-His armies are made up of schismatics who, pilliage, rape, and burn the holy city of St. Mark.
-The Muslims fund the very armies that tear through the holy city.

Something has to be done to counter this, otherwise you agree to support Ugo and agree to weaken te Church. Listen to the words of the gentlemen from Bavaria, and Cologne, and follow i the footsteps of Peidmonte in chapioning the words of the Holy Church."

Ruprecht slowly slumps into his chair, exhaustion overcoming him. The bloodstain on his robe grows slowly, and the word of the Lord has left him.

All around, the members of the Diet jabber, and his fevered mind takes flight. Herrman, the child of the Dragon, flicks out his scaled, forked tongue and laughs, while behind him Ladislav the Dragon gathers shadows around him. From Venice, an old parrot repeats himself again and again, Genoese ants scurry about, and through all this, the Emperor stay silent.

Is this what the Lord intended? Is this what the vision was about?

I am too weak a vessel for this task.

He closes his eyes and begins to pray.

"Herr Lanceto, please, do not spit while talking. I am sure if we keep all our calm, we will come to a mutual understanding.

You can do a Holy Inquisition on me if you like, though Archbishop Montpetit doesn't seem to think that me or my Lord the Count Palatine are devil worshippers. Maybe the Church, allowing your Lord to convert christians to islam, also allowed you to conduct inquisitions in the name of God.

We understand you have issues, yet, I don't understand the importance of bringing them to a body you recognise as not being your own. I understand you want to fight Hungary, but yet your Lord sacrificed Venice in order to NOT meet the Dual Monarchy's armies on the battlefied.

What game are you playing here, Herr Lancetto? What are you hiding? I surely welcome you within these walls, but have difficulty understanding your purpose here? Are you here for peace? That is what the my Bavarian counterpart seems to propose. Are you here to condemn your Doge's actions as well as Lord Ugo's actions? That is what the Cardinal Archbishop of Koln seems to do.

As you say, you only answer to the Holy Church.

Do we answer to you, Herr Lancetto?

Stefano Lancetto speaks
"This is becoming a clear waste of time. None of you plan to do anything it seems. With such sharp tongues, all of you judge without knowing. Rediculous treaties placed before me, and a process that works too slow to help Venezia. In fact it looks like I will have to go outside of the Empire to gain any support for my nation. It is clear that if you do not support Venezia then you support the braggered pederast that is Ugo. With such men, I will not negotiatie, I will not speak, and I will not listen. Let only the holy show themselves in support of Venezia, for all the devils fight with Ugo. Such dragon as it is called, and if I spit it is at Ugo and any nation that supports him."

de Laurendau stands, addressing the Venetian.

"Monsieur Lancetto, the man who moves towards conflict with Genoa is not His Majesty, but his cousin, the Duke of Savoy. Because of His Grace's connections with the region, as head of the House of Savoy, and as the rightful claimant for the Duchy of Milan, he has many vested interests in the area, interests which are being put in jeopardy by rebellious peasants. The thought of the rabble deciding their kings is offensive, but even worse it is infectious, with news of Genoa's actions spread throughout the world by wagging tongues. As I understand it, His Grace's sudden warlike stance was triggered by the apprehention of peasants preaching this republicanism within Savoy."

Albrecht sighs deeply, wearied by the incessant bickering. When the King had unrolled and read the peace treaty, he had some faint hope that maybe progress had been made... yet things had bogged down again. Caressing and drawing strength from the holy cross emblazoned on his chest, he stands for one more attempt... this time focusing on the emissary from Venice.

"We are all intelligent men here, sir. We are also quite able of hearing. Repeating the same points over and over again makes no progress and leaves the realm you claim to be defending in worse and worse shape. I would much rather be standing with those seeking your complete annexation, but instead I stand in the name of the dead trying to end this war with a chance for the Serene Republic to rise again from its shattered ashes.

In the name of your dead I say: the more you reiterate the same list without a proposal of your terms, the more that future... and the healing of the anguish done by Ugo... slips away.

In the name of your dead I say: let peace once more stretch its tranquil blanket over a proud and free realm. Let it be a peace you had some say in.

Rally for this one last chance and Bavaria will aid you. Spurn it and you will look around for allies only to find you have none as your last few cities burn while you fiddle in your pride. This is not a threat. It is a statement of how things stand and will be."

Görlitz finally gets a hold of the treaty.

"The Peace of St. Stephen looks fine, but as most treaty, both parties have to agree. So, what will it be, herr Lancetto? Peace? Or hiding your armies in Hellas?"

Ramius said:
-Ugo has been excommunicated, and proven a heretic.
-His armies are made up of schismatics who, pilliage, rape, and burn the holy city of St. Mark.
-The Muslims fund the very armies that tear through the holy city.
"I find it worthy of a diverting chuckle herr Lancetto that the three points you ceaselessly repeat are completely devoid of fact. Excommunication does not deem an individual a heretic. Ask the Archbishop of Köln; any man of God knows that. As for those armies that sacked Venice, the soldiers of them do profess only the One True Faith. And the Moldavian warlords who partook of the Muslim coin, in imitation of Venice which has grown fat on bloodstained trade, have been rebuked and were hundreds of miles from Venice. Your city is no more holy than any other, for the appellation you give it belongs only to four blessed sites in all the world. Again, ask the Archbishop," Count Rozmberk commented, losing his usual affability.

"But please, are you willing to gain peace? We put forth an offer to resolve these hostilities, as both God and Duke Albrecht compel us. Please take some time to respond to it."

Görlitz coughed and answered.

"What is this thinking? The right to rule is given by God, not by the peasants! The peasants do their work in the field, owned by their lords. Their duty, under God, is to obey, and to work. Not to choose which Ruler-for-a-day they want! This is ridiculous."

Georgio Grimaldi responded:

"I believe that it is the flock who knows who is best to protect them. God has enlighten them, and they shall hand over their rule for their choice as long as he is a just and enlightened man. Is this different from the teachings of Saint Isidoro many centuries ago, in the Visigothic Kingdom, where he proclaimed that God gives power to the People and the People hands it over to the best amongst Equal, thus puting the figure of the King? He also said a very important message: A King that rules without the acordance of his people is a tyrant, and as a tyrant, the people have the right to comit Tyranicide. Please, my adversary, I believe that reading his works may enlighten you in the ways of power more then you think, for it has been the way of power for centuries, not only in the Republic, but in Iberia and many regions and Kingdoms of Europe. This, actually, is the basis of the idea of today's Republic. And inspired by this, La Superba Republica was originaly formed in the 10th Century since our Lord Jesus Christ, when the people established the free Commune, governed by elected consuls which were chosen directly by the neighbors of Genova and the sorrounding regions. I do not really see, then, the reason why would you say that it is insane, since there were more radical times for La Superba before this Ghibeline era?"
