An Ambassador from Cyprus

Four Knights enter the Dodges royal palace in Venice. They are large muscular men who waer large red cloaks and are holding their helms with the the large red crests in their hands. Slung across their backs are their circular shields and the Lambda of the Order of Laconia.

After speaking with some of the Dodges minor buerecrates they are guided into the hall to meet the Dodge.

"All hail the Dodge of Venice...cry out the four who click leg armor together and slaute. The leagrest of the four steps forward. I am the Cypriot Knight Epicurusand have been sent by my noble lords to serve as the Ambassador to Venice"

"Your Lordship I have been requested to ask several specific questions related to your alliance with the Ottomans, and what appears to the Court at Faramgusta to be an expansionist Venetian policy. The Kings wish no ill of you, but your current agreements seem to encourage the expansion not retraction of the infidel."

Furthermore, we would like to raise the issue of Georgia with you. We as the other bulkwark of Christiandom in the east would like to ask what you believe can be done to maintain them...and what efforts are you willing to take. Sadly time is of the essence.

The four knights turn and leave.

The Dodge mutters to himself.."Interesting that these Cypriots think they are Spartans because they are too lazy to bow...."only to God"..hummp

TUSCAN OUTRAGE!

image1.x300.jpg

The recent actions of Byzantium upon their vassal (however unruly) of the Duchy of Athens has sparked a fervor for revenge in Florence. The Republic and its immediate neighbors are found threatened with the possibility of losing what aspirations they have in the east ... a prospect which sits well with neither Tuscany nor other ambitious city-states in the Italian penninsula. Ancient resentment against their former overlord bubbles once more to the surface, and with Florence's urging, Italy finds itself looking eastward ... angrily.

Tuscany gains a CB against Byzantium for 24 months

Modena (5) gains a CB against Byzantium for 12 months

Venice (6) gains a CB against Byzantium for 12 months

Rolled to see which Italian city-states would gain CBs (other than Tuscany) ...
1-4 no, 5-6 yes

Sandrine delivered a letter to the Doge.

beale_big.jpg

"A letter from Giovanna, your Grace..."

The letter read:

Victorious Doge of Venice,

May I be among the first to send my congratulations on your glorious victory over the Serbian heathens. Indeed a great victory for Christianity. Has Janues arrived in Venice yet? If so, I prey she has been of good company.

Signed in Amiens,

Tassos Katsiambis addresses the Doge

"All Venicians and Tuscans have been offered 1 week to leave Constantinople or before they are imprisoned as spies. Venician and Tuscan merchants are no longer welcome in the Empire and anyone of those nationalities who enters uninvited will be executed on the spot.

I have been recalled, and so will now leave you to your mad dreams of dominion in the East"

With that, he turns to leave."

The Wallachian messengers arrive at the splendid city and bring forth a text of the Adriatic Alliance for discussion at the seat of St. Mark too. Before leaving they only notify the court that a parallel debate will take place in Sarajevo, home to the Balkanic Alliance.

The text of the treaty estabilishing the Adriatic Alliance (including: Venice, Bosnia, Modena, Ragusa, Transylvania and Wallachia)

Clausa Prima; The below signed representatives of their nations pledge full support and conduct that will in no way violate the clauses, upon which they agree by signing this document.

Clausa Secunda; The official name of the alliance will be "The Adriatic Alliance" and all signataries swear by all that is holy to them to protect the interests of the alliance and respective member states.

Clausa Tercia; All dignataries will refrain from violent action against any other member. Furthemore, they will allow allied troops to move through their territory (or areas under their control) in peace or war.

Clausa Quatra; Members are obligated to declare war against nations that have attacked militarily other members of the alliance. Without exeptions.

Clausa Quinta; Members are NOT obligated to declare war against nations that are attacked militarily by other members of the alliance. However joining the attacking member of the alliance is strongly recommended, albeit not legally bonding.

Clausa Sexta; Members cannot leave the alliance, but can be expelled from it by 2/3 majority. If they nonetheless desire to leave the alliance on their accord, existing members of the alliance reserve for themselves the right for a declaration of war against the departing member.

Clausa Septa; New alliance members will be accepted on the basis of 3/4 majority vote by the existing members of the alliance.

Clausa Octa; The formal leader of the alliance will be the most Serene Republic of St. Mark or Venice as she is the senior partner in the alliance, while Bosnia will act as an informal leader of the Balkan members of the alliance. Furthemore, Venezia will be the official seat of the Adriatic Alliance, as the is the unquestionable premier port and city in the region.

Clausa Fina; All previous clauses in this treaty are subject to change by a 5/6 majority of existing alliance members. The same rule applies to adding new clauses"

A letter arrives from Constantinople

"Doge Foscari,

I am afraid I can not believe you claim that Venice does not fight brutal wars, when I know what happened to my city when you and your allies sacked it in 1204 and when I think of the utterly senseless war of aggression you have started. However you can rest assured I will never descend to your level.

Perhaps you will remember my offer and wish you had accepted when your armies have been destroyed. I am unlikely to be so generous again.

Signed,

Ioannes VIII, in Christ the God, King and Emperor of the Romans"

The swift Wallachian messangers arrive with a revised copy of the Adriatic League Treaty. Member courts are urged to carefully ponder the text:

The text of the treaty estabilishing the Adriatic League (including: Venice, Bosnia, Modena, Ragusa, Transylvania and Wallachia)

Clausa Prima; The below signed representatives of their nations pledge full support and conduct that will in no way violate the clauses, upon which they agree by signing this document.

Clausa Secunda; The official name of the alliance will be "Adriatic League" and all signataries swear by all that is holy to them to protect the interests of the alliance and respective member states.

Clausa Tercia; All dignataries will refrain from violent action against any other member. Furthemore, they will allow allied troops to move through their territory (or areas under their control) in peace or war.

Clausa Quinta: Members have two courses to follow when declaring war against a third party.

Clausa Quinta Minora Prima: When securing approval of the declaration of war by the leader of the alliance prior to commencing hostilities, the attacking member has the option of demanding assistance from other member states against the attacked nation. Unless demanded, the other member states have the freedom to refrain from supporting the attacking member if they choose to do so without any penalties.

Clausa Quinta Minora Secunda: When approval by the leader of the Adriatic League was not secured prior to the commencement of hostilities, the member states are not required to aid the attacking member, but may do so if they choose. No legal obligation exists however.

Clausa Quatra; Members are obligated to declare war against nations that have attacked militarily other members of the alliance. Without exeptions.

Clausa Sexta; Members cannot leave the alliance, but can be expelled from it by 2/3 majority. If they nonetheless desire to leave the alliance on their accord, existing members of the alliance reserve for themselves the right for a declaration of war against the departing member.

Clausa Septa; New alliance members will be approved by the leader of the Alliance solely.

Clausa Octa: The first formal leader of the alliance will in the beggining be the most Serene Republic. After three years and every three years a new leader will be elected on the basis of a 3/4 majority. The seat of the alliance will remain in Venice, separate however from the Doge's Court of the Most Serene Republic.

Clausa Argenta: Any priviliges and powers of the leader of the alliance can be substituted by a 3/4 majority vote by the existing members.

Clausa Fina; All previous clauses in this treaty are subject to change by a 5/6 majority of existing alliance members. The same rule applies to adding new clauses

A letter arrives from Constantinople

"Doge,

I have recently freed the people of Athens from foreign oppression and welcomed them back into the Empire from which they were most cruelly ripped. I would no more surrender them to foriegn rule than I would the people of Constantinople itself.

However I will make you an offer, which if you truly seek anything other then the increasing of your own power you will accept.

1. Athens will be released from Roman rule
2. Athens will become a republic under the rule of an elected despot (Lord).
3. Athens will pay tribute to Tuscany in return for their protection, and will aid in Tuscanies defense if war is declared upon her.
4. Athens will in no other way be obligated to Tuscany.

So Athens will become a Vassal with slightly more freedom than it had before, and will be returned to native rule.

If you do not accept this then you can no longer claim to be fighting for the freedom of Athens.

Signed,

Ioannes VIII, in Christ the God, King and Emperor of the Romans"

A messenger brings a letter for the Doge. He is dressed in black with a green birch leaf on the chest. He awaits the answer...

Noble Doge of Venice,

We are in a desperate fight for freedom and justice for the people of German-Livonia, the Empire and christianity itself.
We urge you and your alliance, to assist us in this Godly work.

The treacherous Doge of Genoa, have acted, like the true backstabber he is, not in the interest of unity within the empire, solely in his own interest, trying to disrupt the empire and throw into a civil war.

With your support, Noble Doge, we can bring about a new order of trust among the catholic christians of Europe and end the false, arrogant and tyrant regime of Genoa..

We would honestly welcome you with open arms into this rigtheous project..

Kristiern Wasa, King of Germans

A messenger brings a message for the Doge.

"Your majesty,

Your words about me in the Diet disturb me. I cannot see how you can be a friend, looking for peace, to suddenly turn to insulting me and throwing accusations around at me like that. I will start at the top.

Wallachia has been threatening the Romans for far too long. The Romans have had no chance to pay the loan back to them, as they have been in a perpetual state of war. Wallachia knew this, yet they continued to threaten them. They insulted me when I wouldn't give them a loan, for I knew it would do their economy no good, and I had other uses for it. Also, Wallachia is not your ally and has made it very clear to their allies that they don't want to be allied to you.

Secondly, Genoa is not in any way pulling the strings in the Empire. I assure you, I have full support of the Emperor in war against Hungary and Livonia. Hungary has broken oaths of vassalage, and Genoa, not the Empire, declared war on them in accordance with our friend in Luxembourg. The Empire has not made any declarations of war against Hungary. As for the war in Livonia, it has not yet been declared, as the Livonians have a chance to redeem themselvs, but I also assure you, the Emperor has given me full support in this war, as the Livonians have defied him.

I find your accusations of me painful, to say the least. I had hoped we could bring a friendship about and even unite our families, but you are making it harder and harder.

Written by his own hand at Vienna,

A message from Venice

The Ambassador from Georgia arrives into the palace of the Dodge..he begins his dialogue"
"Great and Ever Omnipotent Dodge of Venice, Defender of the Faith, Lord of Crete, Ionia, and commander of the Great Gallies of Venice.

I bring you grave news. The situation of Georgia has grown most dire. Our Allies have forced us into a state of virtual subjugation. Though our Armies were victorious both at Sochie and Armenia, the Turkish hords continue to press on and the peace generated by Cyprus is more than humiliating.

Cyprus feels that Georgia is a rouge state and should as such be vassalized to her and her armied and fleets disbanded. Cyprus argues that the inability of Georgia to seek either allies or funding is a result of this hatred.

The Mepe is tired my lord, we doubt that even your most noble armies could save us as the Duchy of Ragusa conspires with the Turk, and Trabezon feels it is more opportunistic to side with the Devout Alliance than with her fellow Chrisitans. "

The Ambassador throws himself at the feet of the Dodge,

Such is the shame of Georgia in defeat my lord...please tell us if anything can be done?

I am hearing different reports in regards to this alliance we have.

Is there truly an alliance between Venice and the Balkan alliance? Or are we still waiting for that to be complete?

also prince Lepes wishes to congratulate you on your peace with the empire. It is good to see the great Venice at peace once again.

Your friend

Jan van Wassenaer

The Livonian special emisar of foreign affairs, Jan van Wassenaer, arrives at Venice..

Wassenaer.txt

Your Grace,

I thank you for receiving me on such short notice, but the matter is important if peace is to be restored in catholic christianity..

My journey here is just the beginning of a larger mission, I intend to visit all the Italian sovereigns.

First, the Grand Duchy of Livonia is an integral part of The Holy Roman Empire make no mistake about that. The recent accusations on my Head of State is based upon misunderstandings, and nothing more..

I say this to you, in the light of recent events in France..and England, that peace in the HRE, must be preserved...at all costs ..or it will be the end of the Empire..as we know it..

We want to thank you for the recent letter to the Imperial Diet, it showed to the world that Livonia is speaking for a just cause..and always will..
