Duke Henri nods to René and motions to the right side of his ducal throne.

"You are well received and welcome here, René. Take your rightful place at my side. I am honored to have a Savoyard in my court. I would give you the task of serving as my advisor and relaying to me the advice of the wise Amédée of Savoy.

How is the good Duke? All is well in his duchy I pray. Now René please grant me a request. My guard will show you to your quarters. The finest in Moulins for a represenative of Savoy!"

Henri stands and beckons René into a side corridor. Out of the prying eyes of the court, the two men discuss matters of great importance for both Bourbon and Savoy.

A Duke's pledge

"TREATY PROPOSAL: Treaty of Chambery

I. Savoy and Bourbonnais are to be united in military matters where one of us is threatened. An attack on one is an attack on all. This is a mainly defensive alliance, although we should not exclude the possibility of offensive operations against foes.

II. Matters such as Alliance declarations of war are to be done with a vote. Each nation in the alliance recieves one vote. A vote will be held for declarations of war, inducting new members into our alliance, and other concerns that affects all of our countries.

III. Although this Holy Alliance is not a trade alliance, clearly each of us would see the benefits of one between us. At a future time, plans for an alliance for Trade could be drawn up.

[X] Duke Amedee VIII of Savoy
[X] Duke Henri I of Bourbon

The Arrest of "King" Charles I

Duke Amédée enters the court.

"Louis, is the Frenchman still here?"

"Charles? Yes, he's here. Why?"

Amedee then shouts, "GUARDS! ARREST CHARLES I OF FRANCE! THROW HIM IN THE DUNGEON!"

Count Louis then looks pale. "But.. why brother?"

"For asking me to declare war on my liege, the Queen of Burgundy, and treason against the Emperor. Those are grave sins. He is also not the legitamite heir to the French throne. Thus, I am declaring war on France, and imprisoning Charles.

Oh.. and if France decides to fight back, then execute him."

A message arrives for the Duke of Savoy.

"Treacherous dog,

Congratulations on your failures. I hear that you have imprisoned my representative within your lands. Know that executing him would result in multiple problems with the Pope.

I shall refrain from annexing you as your overlord shall deal with you. You forgot that I hold the original treaty that you offered me and I have evidence that you desired to break free of your overlord. However, should Burgundy not chastise you, I shall do it for them as Burgundy can't attack France due to the Non-aggression pact.

Beware of the retribution from the armies of France.

Written by his own hand at Grenoble,

King Charles I Valois,
King of France."

The entire courts laughs at the letter.

"A REPRESENTATIVE? I guess everyone is a King in France now!"

Louis wipes a tear from his face. "I guess we'll have to turn Savoy over now! To the army of France.. the single guy with a pen and paper writing in Grenoble!"

Amedee laughs even harder. "Louis, I'll let you make the decision. Should we reply?"

Louis then says, "No, my lord. We might not send it to the right King!"

Duke Henri laughed long and hard at the letter from the "King". Clapping his hands the young Duke called to his treasurer.

"Jean, take what wealth we have stored and pay the men. I need all of them ready to march tonight. The traitor King will not survive this time. We must ensure he does not escape!

The time for our duchy to stake its claim in the future of these lands has come my friends! Tonight I ride to Grenoble!

Vive le Bourbonnais!"

Sheating a long blade of fine spanish design he steps out of his court and walks towards the exit with his guardsmen. Turning around he says only:

"René tend to this court. I will give your Duke your regards."

With that, Duke Henri leaves the court for the bloodied battlefields of France.

A note arrives from Aragon:

Duke of Savoy, I wanna let you know that the Federation in the Armistice signed it will mantain status quo of France as the King of England is judicial chief of Gallia.
Second if he did that then you should demand him to the High Tribunal of Gallia so he would be judged.
Third, only true King of France is Louis XII, king of Charles VII and Yolanda of Castilla, and no the Duke of Bourbonnais, and a threat to my nephew is a threat to me.
Fourth, in the armistice was written that the next in line would be Regent of France till Louis is in age.
Now I ask you to withdrawn your war and denounce Charles of Orleans if you think he hadn't work from laws or wait for the Federation joining France in this civil war to mantain the Status Quo in the zone.

The death of the French Regent

Several Federation diplomats arrive to speak to the Duke. After several hours of negotiation, a settlement is reached. Emerging from the halls, Amédée then summons the executioner and the regent. He then proceeds to the courtyard.

After about 10 minutes, Charles I, Regent of France, is dragged from the dungeon to the courtyard. Amédée then clears his throat and begins to speak.

"Charles, Regent of France, false King of France, you are being punished today for your crimes. You demanded I give up my capital of Savoie in exchange for some worthless land in North Africa. You demanded we attack Burgundy, my liege, and Aragon, a member of the Federation, so that my soldiers would die and France would claim the land, because it is your "Crown Territory".

Charles, these are grave crimes. I sentence you to death."

And with that, the executioner blindfolds Charles, pushes him on the chopping block, and lowers his axe..

Duke Amédée then looks at the head lying on the dirt. He then says,

"Put that head on a plate and send it to Grenoble. Attach a note demanding the surrender of France immediately to Savoy and Bourbonnais."

The Death of Duke Amédée VIII

In the middle of war plans and frantic diplomacy, the Duke's stress level was very high. The Duke's heart had never been particularly strong, but it was holding out.. barely.

In the middle of a discussion with several Bourbonnais military officers, a minor noble ran in crying. The Duke, knowing that the Pope was close to excommunicating him, felt his heart leap into his throat. The noble then went "My.. my.. my Duke, the Pope has excommunicated you!!!"

Amédée's eyes shot wide open. His chest began to hurt badly. His arms felt as lead. Amédée, a man of God, excommunicated for killing a liar and a traitor to God? Excommunicated for wishing to bring his Duchy into it's rightful place as a great Kingdom? And being denied that due to the cowardly men of the countries around him?

These thoughts kept flying through his mind. Then.. Duke Amédée collapsed to the floor. Oblivious to the men frantically carrying him to his chambers, Amédée's thoughts continued. Who was the arrogant Pope to tell him what his lot in Heaven was? Why should a mere man be placed in charge of God's church? Isn't that rather outrageous?

Gasping for breath and clutching his heart, Amédée finally spoke form his death bed. "My.. heart.... GODS......."

"The.. Duchy.... shall... go to..... Duke Henri of Bourbonnais....."

And with that, the pain disappeared. Duke Amédée VIII then died a peaceful, quiet death, knowing that Duke Henri I would continue the cause against the heretic self-proclaimed King of France.

A letter comes in from Burgundy. It reads:

"To the regent of Savoie,

With the death of his grace Amédée VIII, the duchy of Savoie is a desperate need of leadership. It has now become clear that the House of Savoie can no longer be trusted, and it is Burgundy's duty, as your overlord, to incorporate your duchy into our realm for the following reasons:

- Plotting against your overlord, the House of Berry, and the crown of Lotharingia.
- Attempting to break vassalship and to annex yourself to the duchy of Bourbon.
- Being excommunicated from the Holy Church.

For these reasons, we will ask you to surrender your country to the crown of Lotharingia. Should this not happen immediately, we will be have to use our ressources and move our armies into your provinces.

Sincerely yours, in God (whatever that means to you),
Marie de Berry, queen of Lotharingia and duchesse de Bourgogne."

A dead snake, pierced by a spear is delivered in the Savoyard court. On the spear is attached a small letter.

"Unlike this snake, Burgundian love for Savoie will never die. So it is with sadness that I must remove you from power. You know where to contact me to surrender.

We are now officially at war.

Marie de Berry, queen of Lotharingia."

CIVIL WAR IN SAVOY!

After the death of Duke Amédée VIII of Savoy, a fierce struggle for the throne erupted. Several hardliner Generals currently control the government. They are the ones responsible for the hostility towards.. well, everyone.

However, the other two factions seem to be gaining power. A Pro-Burgundian faction, led by the Duchess of Savoy, the dead wife of Amédée, and the sister of the Queen of Lotharingia, and a Pro-Amedee IX Faction, intent on peace at any cost.

So far, the faction supporting the Duchess is winning....

Marie de Bourgogne receives words from Lotharingia that her treaty was accepted. A few hours later, a message arrives from Dijon

"
Savoy recognizes it's folly in going against its overlord, Burgundy. To apologize for its apostasy, Savoy offers complete annexation to Lotharingia.

I. Savoie and Piemont will go immediately to the Kingdom of Lotharingia.

II. Savoyard forces recieve military aid against the heretic generals and the hated Church of Savoy.

III. The heir of Savoy retains the title Duke of Savoy.

IV. All hostilities end immediately between our forces.

Meanwhile, a letter is sent to the military generals of the rebelling faction:

"Savoie and Piemonte are now possession of the Crown of Lotharingia. Surrender your troops now, and your lives will be spared. Do not surrender, and the combined armies of Genoa and Lotharingia will conquer you within 3 months time.
