Heinrich Zakrzycki was enjoying his stay in Bremen, nevertheless he came here as prosecutor not for holidays. The time has come to present evidences.
Heirich stepped before the Duke Johann of Bremen, Richter von Gross Germania, two pages with rolls of preachment accompanied him. Heinrich bow before Johann, Adolf von Plau and a number of Doctors and lawyers from the Rostoc University,
“Most Clement Judge, Johann Duke of Bremen and Prussia,
I hereby come before you, the Richter von Gross Germania, to present accustion and evidences which will prove that Henry of Macklemburg lied and slandered House of the Greif, most notably Joachim of the Greif, Regent and Protector of Pommerania.
Although my fellow colleagues Macklemburg broke the order of the trial by presenting their hmmm… assumptions before the accusations I will conclude with the trial. However, I do believe that this breach in the protocol shall be remembered. I can see that some here are puzzled who is accusations and defenders here. Well, just as Henry of Macklemburg attacked House of the Greif and House of the Greif defended with this trial, I will defend here against false assumptions and prove that Macklemburgina side plays with words rather then with facts.”
He pauses for a moment.
“First of all, I would like to remind that this trial is about single, of course ont only but definitely most severe and insulting, Henry’s attack on House of the Greif not about Diet in General. However, my colleagues from Macklemburg decided to preach about earlier things. With apparent Most Clement Judge consent, let it be.
Concerning the Macklemburgian line of defense or rather accusations…” Heinrich looks puzzled. “…I must admit their language skills and rhetoric devices. I was pleased to hear their speech as it was good show of minimum evidence and maximum hmmm… emptiness?”
Heinrich face is emotionless.
“That is why I decided to bring full quotations from the Diet Chamber in Nurnburg.
Here are words of Henry of Macklemburg, words of disobedience and accusations.

Henry looks with bitter eyes at Joachim the Greif
"... I realized that either I declared war on Duke Adolf, or, in the interest of peace in the region, backed down and swallowed my pride. The only ones to support me was the Danes. I find it puzzling, that no princes of the Empire came to help me! Later, after the vassalship ceremony in Kiel, when I wasn't under so much pressure, I had some doctors of law look into it. They couldn't find any legal claims as such Holstein made. Furthermore, I now know that Bremen also didn't support Holsteinian claims, but the future of the Hansa was at stake, so..."
Henry looked at the assambly and the Bremen delegation, to see if he had their undivided attention... he probably had, so he continued...
"So I was a new ruler, young, I still am, and without true friends at the time. I had no choice but to back down or risk the future of the Hansa, the entire Northern region and my Duchy. That is why I am so bitter at my "fellow" princes. When I needed help, no one came. The trait of a true friend is that he needs not always to be summoned when another friend is in trouble, but he keeps an eye on his nearest. I doubt that anyone was unaware of what happened between Mecklemburg and Holstein..."
Then Henry goes a bit forward and looks straight in the eyes of the Emperor:
"Therefore, my lord, since you fail to, or do not wish to, help Mecklemburg in any way, I see no reason to cooperate with the Empire. Friendship goes both ways, and if you are truly my lord, you should take care of my well-being, not only demand and demand and demand. Yes, I refuse to acknowledge the Commerce Commission in any way, as long as the Empire only remains a neutral part on my behalf."
That shocked the assembly. Some nobles had a strange look in their faces, but Henry carried on.
At that moment apart from defying Emperor there were only words of bitterness.
Herr von Plau says that
”This was done, and my Duke thought that this matter was closed. But apparently Duke Joachim didn’t like the words from Duke Henry, so he jumped on my Duke, nearly screaming at him and scolded his highness.
Here are exact words of Joachim of the Greif:

You disappoint me very much. How it can be that your family failed you? I was informed both by my wife and my ambassador in Macklemburg that you were provided full support from Pommerania.
Act of vassalization was your personal choice, and if you dare to say that I somehow pressed you on that you are a… hmmm… let’s not use big words for that. The truth is that we guaranteed your independence and assured that there will be no hostility. Yet you seem to defy or change or words and intensions from the very beginning. However, the worst thing is that you defy Emperor himself and although there is little princes so sensitive about independence and honor then I am this shocks even me.
The same applies to my friend and ally Johann of Bremen who supported you actively from the very beginning but still you have chose a different path, a path of troublemaker who desire to increase his own power and care neither for family bounds nor treaties and Unions.”
I fail to see here any
jumping on Henry, screaming at him or scolding him
Should His Most Clement Judge require I can send for letters and registers of Christine of the Greif-Wittelsbach and Pommern and Bremer ambassadors in Macklemburg. Such words will prove that Henry got most all the support Pommern and Bremen could supply him with.
After that von Plau claims that “…A fight of words continued, and the atmosphere was tense and evil.
When the smoke temporarily cleared, it was only because my Duke offered Duke Joachim his apologies…”

Henry looks at Joachim and smiles
"My honourable cousin, how wonderful finally to get your attention. You fire grave words at me, and I understand that I may use very direct language sometimes. And if that itself upsets you, then I am sorry."
Henry makes a friendly gesture with his hands, but then continues wthout the smiles and friendly eyes:
"But you speak to my too late! I needed you several months ago, and when I finally asked for family help, your wife's answer was, that Pommeria supported both Mecklemburg and Holstein. But what she also wrote to me, was that Pommeria acknowledged Holsteinian claims on Lübeck. Now, I am sorry, but I fail to see where the support is in that. As for my independce, I must admit, that I find it peculiar, that with one hand, the Greif's support and guarantee my independence, and on the other hand, the Greif's support Holsteinian attempts to make claims on Mecklemburgian lands."
The bewildered Duke Henry shakes his head.
"Furthermore, my dear cousin, you say, that when I say that I was forced, you nearly called my something inappropriate. Well, do you stand here today and officially swear, that you do not think I was pressured? I had no choice, as you well know: it was vassalship or hostilities. Now you blame me for choosing peace? Oh, how rude of me for not throwing the region out into chaos again!? I'll remember that the next time!"
Should anybody wonder, that was sarcasm. Henry continues.
"No, I must admit, that something else than family and its support springs into mind here. But what is done is done. The Emperor wanted to know what happened and I have told him my side of the story. I am a fair man, and I know that the other parties may have some other kind of explanation.
As for my relationship towards Denmark, that is none of the Empire's business. The Danes have been friendly with me, and have supported me in this matter more than my fellow princes have. I would rather have a friendly foreigner as ally, than I would have an indifferent Imperial prince. I find the goodwil I seek in Denmark and overseas, not here. I come and speak my mind, as I think is the healthiest among equals, but all I get in return is poking eyes and allegations.
And while we're at it, I must also inform this assembly, that Mecklemburg supports Danish demands for harsh meassures against the Swedes. If anyone had any doubts about that...
Hmm, it seems that some people here would rather have that I stayed in Mecklemburg for good and minded my own business. Maybe I should!"
Yes, Henry said
”I am sorry” without friendship in his eyes and voice. Nevertheless, Henry continues here his crusade against the House of the Greif, I somehow feel that regardless what would Joachim said Henry was hostile toward him.

“Chere Cousin,
Beware what are you saying in these halls, I am your family and thus I am ready to forgive you a lot but defying Emperor is something completely different.
Also I do not believe that you were threatened with hostilities, neither Emperor nor House of the Greif and the rest of Hansa would ever allow that. However, I heard that you are not so peaceful man as you arrested seven counts of Maclemburg few weeks ago. Hmm, although I do agree that this is internal Macklemburg matter know that some Maclemburg noble families already turned to me begging for help concerning their imprisoned husbands, fathers and cousins.
Your relations with Danes are of course your personal business. However, not so long ago you stated that you are totally neutral and impartial concerning Swedish issue. Fortunately Sweeds didn’t let you to delude them and didn’t agree for you biased mediation as you not so long ago stated clearly.
And while we're at it, I must also inform this assembly, that Mecklemburg supports Danish demands for harsh meassures against the Swedes. If anyone had any doubts about that...
Very well if you want to have my fief annexed and balance in the Baltic area upset here you are my dear cousin.”
Here’s Joachim’s balanced reply, he states here once again that Macklemburg was safe and neither Emperor nor House of the Greif and the rest of Hansa would ever allow any hostilities in the region.
After that Emperor Eric spoke in person with balanced yet much more harsh words then Joachim ever did.

The smile vanishes however when the Emperor's eyes turn to the rebellious Duke of Mecklemburg,
"Your words, Henry, are next to treasonous to our ears. If in truth you wish to severe your ties with the Empire, render up that which the Empire has given you in safe keeping. We speak of your fiefdoms, all of which are our sovereign property above and beyond any claims of any duke or count. If you cannot do this, you make yourself out to be less than thief or a brigand, who at least has no pretensions to nobility.
As for your welfare, young lordlet, it is your duty not ours to investigate every going on in the Empire. Were we to hear every peasant woman's complaint do you imagine that we would have time for the grave issues of our day. If you had wished so, you could have petitioned us for guidance or mediation in this matter. As it stands we are inclined to believe that you are in need of guidance and shall let the vassalship stand for the time, subjecting it to further investigation at a later date.
Finally, no prince shall stand against the welfare of the Empire as a whole, Henry. The Imperial Commerce Commission and its decisions will be accepted within Mecklemburg and its hinterlands. If abuses are found they will be addressed by petition to ourself."
After being reprimanded and called
”lordlet” Henry finally spoke with words of reason… convinced by his new lieges in England and probably by Empeor’s words Henry finally speaks with words of reason, although reluctantly.

Just before Henry of Mecklemburg is to see the Empror once again, he is spotted in the garden outside the Diet, speaking to his advisor, count Adolf von Plau. It is a very heated conversation, and it doesn't fit the Duke at all. Von Plau is trying to explain something to the Duke, and shows him a letter with the royal british seal. Finally it looks like Henry gives in, and with a defeated look in his eyes, he walks to the Singers Hall.
Henry enters and looks at the Emperor and Joachim the Greif. Perceptive people would notice that the Duke seems very pale and not well at all. Henry looks over at von Plau, who nods his head back at Henry. The Duke is defintely not pleased with the situation.
"My Imperial lord, I stand before you now to state that..."
Henry coughs a couple of times, and mumbles something with a grave face...
"...that I will cooperate on the matter concerning the Commerce Commission. Imperial law will thus be executed in Mecklemburgian lands."
Henry turns to Duke Adolf.
"My liege, however you may feel about my vassalship and my person as a whole, I do not deny the oath that I have taken before God in Kiel. I truly am your nominal vassal in Lübeck and Bad Schwartau, and I hope you do not think otherwise. The reason why I told my side of the story, was simply because the Emperor summoned me here to do so. Please do not blame me for fulfilling the Emperor request. I had hoped, when I rose to power, that you and I could have engaged in some real cooperation, but we both know, that until the vassalship is lifted, I am just your servant, and from that, no real cooperation can come, only obediance. I am sorry about this whole mess, but I am still bound to you by oath. So I have sweared, and so it will be! By God I promise!"
Henry then turns to Joachim the Greif.
"Dear cousin. It seems I have offended you. I apologize, truly. I have questioned your loyalty to your family, that being myself. I am sorry. As for defying the Emperor, I hope you have just listened, and can forgive me my direct way of speaking. You say that you can forgive a lot, and I hope you mean it, for it seems that I have a lot that needs forgiving. Again, I am sorry. Believe me, tha last thing that I want to do is to damage the Hansa, as I already have told Duke Johann of Bremen. As for the Danes, the Swedes and my counts back home, well, we can speak of that later. But for the time being, I can only say, that I hope you can forgive my insolence. I am sorry... "
Henry bows before Duke Joachim. Then he adresses the Diet as a whole:
"Gentlemen, nobles, holy fathers. I had come here to speak my case on the request of the Emperor. To speak my oppinion on different matters. To try to mediate. However, I was sadly disappointed. I speak my mind and the truth, but noone is interested in hearing that, and noblemen call me a liar, a brigant, a rebel and really everything but a heretic. I will not lie before this Diet, so therefore it is better that I keep my mouth shut and return home when I have wed princess Jessica. I am sorry that I am not wanted here, but so be it. In the future, Mecklemburg will try to stay out of the Empire's business, and I will remain in Mecklemburg."
Hmmm, too bad he decided to change his opinion and words so late. I also wonder who ever called Henry
”…a liar, a brigant, a rebel and really everything but a heretic.” Perhaps that also should be investigated?
Heinrich nods to von Plau.
…the Pommerian speaker attacked Duke Richard of Normandy, a close personal friend of Duke Henry. These are von Plau’s words. They are clearly not true! In fact it was Duke Henry of Normandy who attacked Pommeranians in most primitive and blunt manner what he admitted himself later on.
I also wonder why herr von Plau speaks about Normandy duke with friendship since as far as I know Norman Princess shall not be given to Macklemburg as Plantagenets think that Macklemburg is unworthy her.
Nevertheless here is blunt Norman attack on Joachim of the Greif.

"Noble Princes of the Roman Empire, I thank you for allowing me to speak before you. I have heard much here, and I cannot in good conscience remain silent. And so now I must witness it to this noble assembly, not out of malice, but in the name of justice: The actions of the Pommern are those of unadulterated, unchristian, Avarice. As for Joachim of the Grief even considering styling himself King of Sweden, such a thing is laughable. His 'crown' was given to him by the rebels, was it not? Would any one of us consider taking up a ring of brass from the mud, and placing it atop our heads?"
Addressing the entire assembly, Richard's voice swells. "Look at the expansive growth of the Pommern lately. How they have taken Danzig as per their treaty, and yet refuse to give the promised land of Ingermenland to the Teutonic Knights. Of course, the lands of Prussia are no more, once again without provocation. It is a shame that the Knights of the North have been silent on this injustice, for Joachim of the Grief desperately needs someone to challenge his aggression. Someone like the Grand Duke of Lithuania, a good Christian man who the Duke bore false witness against. To Joachim, heresy is merely a political tool."
"And does anyone here recall the terms of the treaty that caused the destruction of Prussia? Danzig was the price of Joachim's soul, for he allowed the Northern Alliance to pass through his lands and into Berlin. He betrayed the rest of the Empire to the 'Duke' of 'Livonia'. Were it not for the heroism of the Liga von Nürnburg, then the Empire would be under Livonian yoke by now. He betrayed the Empire, and then betrayed the Livonians. In the west, we have a name for people like that. We call them 'Oathbreaker', and we do not trust them, ever."
The older man looks at the Imperial Princes. "I appologize if I was more blunt than you are accustomed to, but I am unaccustomed to allowing injustice to stand. And the Pommern trying to extort lands from Denmark is simply injustice. Moreover, I have no doubt that should peace be made between Sweden and Denmark, the Oathbreaker would strike at them. However, fear not, good princes. If the Pommern were to strike at Sweden, they would be striking at their overlord, Denmark. And to strike at one Plantagenet Kingdom is to strike at us all. The entire House of Plantagenet stands behind the Emperor's peace plan, and against the expansion of the Pommern into Sweden. Moreover, we ask that the Pommern honor their treaty and cede Ingermenland to the Knights, although we don't expect too much of them."
Richard sits, as his direct attack throws the Diet into chaos.
Josef Zakrzycki herbu Wczele, my beloved father and Chief of Pommern Diplomacy replied to him.

"Bravo, outstanding speech good Duke! You impressed us with your wording, cohesiveness and great rhetoric skills and although your words are insulting and offensive to House of the Greif, TOTALLY inaccurate and deceitful I bow before you.
Still I can agree only on two points with you. Your blunt outburst and attack on mine overlord could not be less direct. The second point is the fact that fortunately for you, you are not Imperial Prince as my Lord would surely demand satisfaction from you if you were.
Your Grace's ignorance concerning the internal Imperial affairs is OUTSTANDING and borders with phantasmagoric illusions.
First of all you dare to insult Sweeds calling them rebels, this is preposterous as in fact Sture was a rebel and rest of the new, legal, Swedish government have nothing to do with him. If Your Grace hasn't noticed Sweeds were recognized not only by Our Most Serene Highness, Erich von Wittelsbach but also Holy See and Danes themselves.
Swedish crown was offered and accepted with all ancient customs and laws, in light of those facts Joachim of the Greif is King of Sweden, although not crowned."
"This is only the beginning of your slander litany.
Your ignorance is again unbelievable. Ingermenland was never EVER meant to be returned neither to Livonian Duchy nor to Teutonic Knights. Ingermenland was to be given to Prussian duchy in exchange for city of Danzig. However, pending Prussian and Lithuanian wars Prussian duke admitted to his mistakes before Hose of the Greif and returned Danzig as compensation for the war he triggered.
Lithuanians are known of their paganism, lust for power and oathbreaking. We are currently waiting for the Papal inquisition to arrive in Vilinus, and Lithuanians returning stolen loot, Memel, to the House of Hohenzolern.
"Horoism" of the Liga von Nurnberg was proved and admitted by BOTH sides to be rather mistaken. All sides of the Bohemian conflict apart of Hessen and Austria admitted that they were wrong and that Bohemia should be recreated. Duke Wasa was one of the greatest and most honorable man of Europe who wanted to stop Austrian from annexing Bohemia. Although all Empire agreed that it should be done he couldn't mind it as Black Death taken him in his best years. Thus Austrians annexed once proud Bohemian kingdom. Fortunately, there is a joyful rumor that our beloved Emperor's skills will convince them to fully recreate Bohemian Kingdom.
I dare to say that if Joachim of the Greif didn't let Danes, Sweeds and Teutonic knights cross their lands we would have a despot on this very throne now."
Josef points at the Imperial Thorne.
"Duke Richard,
I suggest you to consult with the old diet registers and pay more attentions to Holy Roman Empire politicks.
Your suggestion that Pommerania would strike on Sweden is most IDIOTIC and PREPESTROUS thing I have ever heard in these halls.
Isn't Joachim of the Greif King of Sweden? He defends his fief as he thinks that Danes simply want too much from them.
As to your words about "Plantagenet Kingdom" I must say that I found them threatening and imperialistic. I call the Diet to think about those words in silence as this "Plantagenet Kingdom" as Duke Henry called it, has expanded enormously lately stepping even into Holy Roman Empire soil.
I will tell this openly Gentlemen.
Would Duke of Macklemburg dare to OPENLY defy Emperor's words without backing of this "Plantagentet Kingdom" I seriously doubt that.
After that in came MOST disgusting, barbaric and blunt attack in Diet’s history, not only untrue but also told in disgusting manner. This is the VERY speech we came here to accuse, Henry’s slander against House of the Greif and Joachim of the Greif in particular.

With furious eyes, Henry stared at the Pommerian speaker. Adolf von Plau tried to get near the Mecklemburgian Duke to stop him from making any more diplomatic mistakes, but Henry ignored his advisor.
"It is bad enough that I have to suffer the rediculous words from you and your Duke, but to attack my friend and future family, that is where you cross the line! Why in God's name has noone put a stop to the endless insolence of the Pommerians, that is a great riddle to me! Since I have to bow before Imperial codex and tradition, I should expect YOU to do the same. I find your behaviour offensive and out of line! You didn't even know his name, but STILL you insulted him! I promised the Diet earlier that I would keep quiet from now on, but maybe that promise was premature!"
The Duke of Mecklemburg looks like a man that is going into a frenzy...
"You accuse the Plantagenet dynasty of excactly the same things you Pommerians do yourself. Only the difference is, that YOU are guilty of the charges and the Duke of Normandy is NOT!
YOU are the war-mongers, YOU are the aggressors, YOU are the rebels, YOU are the brigands and YOU are first of all the LIARS!!!"
The Duke waves his arms around
"I have been accused of defying the Emperor, after I had spoken my free mind, and I was labelled as a rebel. YOU on the other hand, lurk around in the dark and backstabs honest people, and not only do you get away with it, but you are also credited for it afterwards. Like the stunt you pulled with the Swedish crown! My God, man! Have you people no shame? What kind of Christians are you?"
The Duke has raised his voice to dramatic decibels, but then he shakes his head and holds a one minute break... Then he begins to leave... again...
"Argh! Whats the point of this? It seems like noone within the Empire sees the Pommerians for what they truly are. This is hopeless and fruitless!"
The Duke leaves in a hurry, with an angry pace... von Plau tries to keep up with him and looks over his shoulder to see the reactions of the Princes.
Josef Zakrzycki shocked by the intensity and disgusted by the manner of the attack didn’t even bothered to reply to those lies and decided to bring this case directly before the court.

“Your Grace,
I require Imperial Court assistance and hereby accuse Henry of Maclemburg of gravest slander these halls have ever heard. I respect the right to state ones opinions, freedom of speech etc. etc. Especially concerning the fact that Victor von Blommenstein himself was trying to shut me up.
However, Macklemburgian duke's violent, blunt, continuous and barbaric attacks are unprecedented. These attacks have also no basis in truth and facts as we all know that House of the Greif is one of the most noble and honorable ones, not only in the Empire but also in all Europe.
I call duke of Bremen to review this case as he is Richter of Gross Germania and Macklemburg is under his jurisdiction. If I am wrong then I require the Imperial Court to proceed with the trial of Henry, Duke of Macklemburg.”
Here are herr von Plau words which he said a moment ago.
“So, what we have here is a Duke Joachim, that refuses an offered hand of friendship and apology. A man, that attacks other nobles with the most foul and devious language, very unfit to be spoken at the Diet. Just to make matters worse, he accused my Duke of being in the pocket of the Platagnet dynasty. Duke Joachim sees this family as a major threat against his newly won possessions.
In addition, the Pommerian speaker accused my Duke of being drunk! Yes, you all heard it... DRUNK! To accuse a Prince of the Empire of being drunk while attending the Diet halls is one of the worst accusations that I have ever heard at the Diet. And I have personally been there many times. No, I think that if anyone was drunk that day, it must have been the Pommerian, for he was definitely not thinking clearly.
Yes, so it is clear. The Pommerians broke the etiquette, and my Duke answered the charges and lies. Not an easy task from a man that only minutes before had to engage in a humiliating diplomatic retreat. But my Duke sets honour first of all. Maybe that is his greatest weakness, that he will not accept compromise when the honour of his friends or himself is at stake.”
Another moment passes, as Adolf pours himself some more water.
“Nobody is unaware that my Duke was being attacked at the time. So he chose not to be quiet. He spoke his mind, and the words he uttered represents the opinion of every true nobleman inside and outside the Empire. My Duke accused the Duke of Pommeria of being a liar, a warmonger, a rebel...
This defence here in Bremen will NOT excuse or apologise the words of Duke Henry. In fact, it is my intention to PROVE the validity of these accusations. We will do so by casting a light on the actions, words and lies that the Pommerians have made during the reign of Duke Joachim. Since nobody has dared this before, we consider it our DUTY to cast light on this matter. We will illuminate the dark in which the Pommerian monster hides. We will present the views of rulers from all over Christianity, and we will especially focus on the Swedish matter. For there lies the best proof of the true Pommerian intentions. In fact, I am in no hurry to get this resolved, for the more I show the true face of Pommeria to the world, the more the humiliation of Pommeria it will be. For my sake, let this trial last for years, if God will!
It is my job to prove that my Duke was telling the truth when he attacked Duke Joachim, and it is the job of the Pommerian prosecution to prove that my Duke is wrong. To prove, that Duke Joachim is a just, loyal, truthful, forgiving, Christian, noble, honourable, etc., etc. ,... man! And may I remind the Pommerians, that this time it is not enough simply to wave of the accusations and thus hide behind “dynastic rights” or the Emperor. This is a court room, and you WILL present real evidence or lose!”
Herr von Plau do you want me to accuse you of slander and lies also? I think I am forced to do so!
I hereby accuse Adolf von Plau of slander and lies which are to help him in defending his overlord Henry of Macklemburg. I require apologies, withdrawing of above mentioned words and more reliable Macklemburgian lawyer.
Here are my arguments against her von Plau.
First – When Joachim of the Greif refused an offered hand of friendship and apology?
Second – When did he attack other nobles with the most foul and devious language, very unfit to be spoken at the Diet?
Third – When did Joachim accuse Henry of being in the pocket of the Platagnet dynasty?
Fourth – When did the Pommeranian speaker accuse Henry of being drunk?
I also remind future Macklemburgian delegates that we are in court right now and your emotional involving in the trial as well as your expressions and lofty style is not really appropriate.
As the trial conclusion I require Henry of Macklemburg to send the letter of apology, confirmed by Johann of Bremen directly to Stettin in order to keep him in register.
Henry of Macklemburg should also officially apology Joachim of the Greif, the House of the Greif and the whole Diet for his slander, lack of etiquette and manner of speech. He should promise that would never attack House of the Greif nor anybody else in such words at any time.
That is all Most Clemnt Judge and my fellow colleagues.”
