A letter arrives for the Primate of the Diocese of Germania.
Cardinal Archbishop Stephen Bodeker of Berlin, Your Holiness, Primate of the Diocese of Germania.
I have grave news for the Holy Mother Church, and this I turn to you, my immediate superior.
As you might know, I am the Holy Mother Churchs most faithfull servant as archbishop of Bremen.
It is in this role I am forced to bring these grave news to you. I have informed his Holiness Pope Joseph I of them, but I understand and accept that he is busy with other matters, and thus I turn to you in my hour of need.
Duke Johann II of Bremen is a cruel and unchristian ruler.
You might ask which prove I have to such a severe accusation, but trust me, unfortunately I have more than enough prove.
The newest is the dukes attack on the noble family von Friesenburg.
It is true that the head of the family, Karl von Friesenburg, has broken his oaths of loyalty to duke Johann II, and even though duke is a ruler that does not deserve the loyalty of his subjects, this is a crime and most be punished.
But Duke Johann II took this matter one step further.
He uses this incident as an excuse for warmongering on the city of Gelre, a war that he only lacks the Emperors support before declaring.
And he ordered the whole von Friesenburg family to be punished.
It is correct that according to Bremer law, it is possible to punish a family for acts of treason by said familys head, but bear in mind that these laws have been written by Johann II himself, in close cooperation with his father-in-law.
What is even worse, duke Johann II was not consent to merely punish innocent women and children for the crimes of another man, he even ordered Karl von Friesenburgs oldest son, Joachim von Friesenburg, murdered. Sure, there is no evidence to support this, but who needs evidence when such fouls deeds speak for themself. God, who knows all, will surely punish Johann II for these crimes.
Your Holiness, I ask that the Holy Mother Church punishes duke Johann II as well. Is it not our task to carry out Gods commands and wishes?
Remember, it is only 60 years hence that Bremen was ruled by its archbishop, and I am sure that no archbishop would ever have commited such sins as those Johann II is commiting.
I await your response.
Horst Töllnich
By Gods will Archbishop of Bremen
