History

BrandenburgCOA2.jpg

The lands extending eastward from the Elbe to the Vistula, once inhabited by Germans, were invaded by Slavic tribes who, during the sixth century of the Christian era, pushed their way as far as the Elbe and the Saale in Thuringia. Charlemagne was the first to check their advance; later, Henry I attacked them, captured Brennabor, the stronghold of the Lusatians, and to safeguard his conquests established the North Mark. In 939 Otto I brought the country of the Hevelli under his power, placed the Slavic races as far as the Oder under tribute, and to further the work of their conversion founded the dioceses of Havelberg and Brandenburg (948), which in 968 were placed under the recently founded Archdiocese of Magdeburg. Nevertheless, Christianity made slow progress. The hate of the subdued for their German conquerors, far from abating, burst forth in a great uprising (983). The Slavs pressed on as far as the Elbe, conquered Brandenburg and Havelberg, and destroyed the seeds of Christian civilization that had been planted there. Emperors Henry II and Conrad II, it is true, again brought the Lusatians under the power of the German Empire, but the real evangelization of the country was not resumed until the time of Count Albert of Ballenstadt, founder of the Ascanian line, who had been made Margrave of the North Mark by Emperor Lothair II (1134). Albert entered into friendly relations with the Wendish prince, Pribislav, at that time the ruler of Brandenburg, was chosen by him as his heir, and in 1150 took possession of the land, assuming at the same time the title of Margrave of Brandenburg. He brought colonists from the Lower Rhine and Utrecht, who by the methods learned in their old homes reclaimed the swamp lands of the Mark for agricultural purposes; the cities were peopled anew; the Dioceses of Brandenburg and Havelberg re-established; churches and monasteries erected; and the Wendish population soon won over to Christianity and the German Empire. The most active part in the conversion of the country was taken by the Premonstratensians and Cistercians. Even before the death of their founder, St. Norbert, Bishop of Magdeburg (1126-34), the Premonstratensians founded the monastery of Gottesgnaden (1131) and later that of Leitzkau, near Magdeburg (1149), as well as monasteries at Jerichow (1144), the city of Brandenburg (1165), Gramzow in the Uckermark (c. 1180), and elsewhere. The bishoprics of Brandenburg and Havelberg and the seats in their respective cathedral chapters were held by members of this order. The Premonstratensians were equalled in zeal, particularly during the thirteenth century, by the Cistercians, who had been introduced into the country by Albert's son and successor. Their foundations at Zinna (1170), Lehnin (1183), Chorin (1272), Jüterbog (1282), Himmelpforte (c. 1290), etc., were centres for the work of colonization, which was conducted on a large scale.

When the Ascanian line had become extinct, Emperor Louis the Bavarian annexed the Mark to his own territories (1320), but as early as 1373 the House of Wittelsbach was forced to relinquish Brandenburg, which in 1356 had been raised to the rank of an electorate, to Emperor Charles IV, who made it a dependency of the Bohemian Crown. Charles restored discipline, put an end to the extortion of the nobles, established the cathedral chapter of Tangermunde, and raised the Mark to renewed prosperity. The Dioceses of Brandenburg and Havelberg, however, ceased to be direct fiefs of the empire. Charles's son, Sigismund, mortgaged the Mark (1388-1411) and in 1411 appointed as Statthalter (Governor) Burgrave Frederick of Nuremberg, who took possession in 1412, and, having overcome the opposition of the nobles, was solemnly invested with the Mark of Brandenburg as an elector of the German Empire (1417). In this way Brandenburg passed into the possession of the Hohenzollerns, who have since held it without interruption. While Frederick I occupied himself almost exclusively with matters connected with the empire, his son, Frederick II, concentrated his attention on the government of his territory. Sadly Frederick II was recently killed at the hands of an assassin.

Brandenburgmap.jpg

Brandenburg is a poor country. It's soil is sandy, much less fertile than the rich Loess lands of Magdeburg. Needless to say, there is no mining and, as the country is landlocked, no harbour. While Brandenburg is one of the larger imperial territories, and it's margrave being an elector, one of the politically more important princes, the margrave can only look with envy at the neighbouring Archdiocesis of Magdeburg, the Duchy of Saxony and the Hanseatic League.

Treasurer: Hermann Grunenfeld

The dusty chamber of the treasurer. He is known to be tight with the money. Very tight. Then again he has to be as the finances of Brandenburg are poor to say the least. The dukes often order magnificent things to be built, the treasurer has the unpleasant job of telling his lord that it is not possible. Even though Herr Grunenfeld is a penny-pincher he does do his job with minute detail and skill. Perhaps this is also why he has survived in his job for longer than most of his predecessors.

Guard Captain: Heinrich von Sellen

Brandenburg has no professional army. Instead it relies on the forces of various nobles that owe allegiance to the duke. According to old tradition and obligation these nobles have to contribute with what they have in times of war. Being quite poor the military might of Brandenburg is not impressive when compared to some of its neighbours. It is estimated that the various lords of the realm can raise one division of men in total in times of war. This can off course be bolstered through the use of foreign mercenaries. Even so mercenaries work for gold, something the Brandenburg treasury is not famous for being full of.

The duke himself does maintain a few companies of men. Chief among these are his own personal guard, lead by captain Heinrich von Sellen. The guard numbers some two hundred of the dukes best troops. These men have an important duty, not only are they tasked with defending the dukes estates, but also with protecting his life.

Diocese Bishop: Stephen Bodeker

The Diocese of Brandenburg, founded 1 October, 948, by Otto the Great, was bounded on the east by the Oder, on the west and south by the Elbe and the Black Elster, and on the north by the Uckermark. The first bishop was Thietmar or Ditmar (d. before 968); his successor, Dodilo, was murdered in 980. The succeeding bishops, after the heathen Wends again conquered Brandenburg (983), lived for the most part as coadjutors to other prelates in various places in Germany. Bishop Wigger, the fifteenth in line of succession (1138-60), was the first who was able to return to his diocese. Like his successors, as late as the middle of the fifteenth century, Bishop Wigger belonged to the Order of Premonstratensians, and formed his cathedral chapter from members of his order. Among the bishops of the fifteenth century, Stephen Bodeker (1421- present) has so far distinguished himself by unusual activity along the lines of education and reform.

Johann sat in the corner of his cell, chewing on the last remains of his stale bread and counting the stones that made up the walls and roof of the cell. Eightthousandninehundredandeleven... eightthousandninehundredandtwelve... eightthousandninehundredandthirteen.

He stopped the counting and looked dully into the room. He had been here for months and had never quite gotten used to his cell. "Why oh why brother have you put me here!?" When he had asked Albrecht that he had just leered at him. His younger brother - the chancellor - had taken complete control of Brandenburg after Frederick had been killed. Stabbed to death by an assassin. Now that he was sitting here to rot it was obvious that this was all connected!

"Curses be upon you Albrecht! If I ever get out of here I will twist your scrawny neck until the head falls off and kick it all the way around the battlement!" To make it worse he had not seen his wife in months either. Sighing he looked at the dungeon door and wondered if he would ever get out of this cell...

Looking out from the tower his office was located, Albrecht Hohenzollern stood straight with both hands behind his back. He looked down at the people working below. Working like ants, they were beneath his contempt. Born to serve him they were and serve him they would.

Albrecht had no opposition to his rule, he had made sure of that. Murdered one brother and locked up the other. Johann would rot in that cell forever too. Even Albrecht had some scruples, and he did find it unsettling to kill his own family unless he had a good reason. Killing Frederick was essential though. After all, the runt had stood in the way of him and the throne. Now it was simply a matter of getting himself crowned margrave.

Soon...

Elisa-Maria Greif-Hohenzollern looked at her daughter Dorothea. She feared for her... and she feared for her son. And herself. Her husband Johann had been gone for months. Noone knew where he was, and to make matters worse it seemed like Albrecht did not do anything to find him. Indeed, he was watching her. Still, captain von Sellen had brought her startling news. Could it be true. She would have to find out. She looked at her daughter again. Dorothea was not as closely watched as she was. Still... sending her eighteen year old daughter off like this...

elisamaria.jpg

Don`t worry mother! I am not a child anymore. I can take care of myself. I will go see the captain, and if any of those buffoons of Albrecht tries to stop me I will question THEM for getting in the way of a noblewoman.

As her daughter turned to leave Elisa-Maria could not help but feel that Dorothea did not fully understand the danger of the situation...

Is this really true captain?

Dorothea looked at the guard captain with disbelief. He had just presented evidence that her uncle Frederick, had in fact been ordered killed by Chancellor Albrecht. Which was off course also her uncle. The seemingly flawless plan had been brought to light as the men doing the deed had proven to be quite... greedy.

I am afraid it is true princess. What is more I have a written confession from one of those responsible to for the deed. Surprisingly enough the man was actually literate. Uncommon in the goons that Albrecht has hired to do his bidding! Little more than bandits!

It is fortunate that there are still good men in the guard loyal to the old Duke... and the new rightfull Duke.. your father. Rumour has it that Albrecht have had him thrown into the dungeon and...

At these news Dorothea looked shocked. Could it be possible that this was true? Was her father a prisoner. While she thought the guard captain continued his speech.

... and I will have to travel to the Emperor with this confessional to get this matter over with. Don`t you worry this will be over before..

* ARRGH!! *

They had never heard the bolt coming. Four men armed with crossbows rounded the corner and it was obvious that they were looking for them. Captain von Sellen had been hit with a crossbow bolt, and apparently it had hit hard enough to go clean through the captains leg. Looking at the gushing fountain of blood from his leg he looked at the attackers with shock and thrust the documents to Dorothea.

I am in no position to leave. I will hold them off. Now go! Take these documents to the Emperor! Run! Get away from here, this place is no longer safe. RUN!!!!

Opening her mouth to protest, Dorothea quickly realized the folly of staying. She turned around and ran. Ran like she had never done before. Over her shoulder she heard the whistling sound of a crossbow bolt. A bolt which had narrowly missed her. Getting out of sight of the attackers she could hear the loud challenge of the wounded captain, trying to hold them off so she could escape.

Dorothea, eighteen year old daughter of the castle count Johan Hohenzollern. Pampered all her life, and never been in the slightest danger. Now she ran for her life.

Albrecht were eating supper when the ruffians came. Outside it was raining, like it had done for days. Irritated at being interrupted he looked up from his food.

You know I do not like being interrupted when I am dining Heinz! If you value your life... speak up man!

The leader of the ruffians took a step back before answering.

We caught your brothers.. uhm.. daughter talking to the guard captain your majeshty! We overheard some of the talks and they know.. uhm.. everything sah.

We took down the captain, and he is still alive... but we did sting him a little heehee.

That was all the man had time to say before a heavy carafe hit him on the side of his head.

Shut up you imbecile!!! Find her. I don`t care how, or how long you have to use. Take all the men. Take the hounds! Find her! And when you do...

Kill her.

At that Albrecht turned away. This was a most unfortunate turn of events. A most unfortunate turn of events indeed. Some lives have been sacrificed during his rise to power. He shuddered at the thought that, if this came out, the next sacrifice of life might be his.

Dorothea looked back over her shoulder. Noone following her. Since she had ran from her uncles goons the rain had increased steadily and she was now soaking wet. It had also become quite late and it was dark out. Tired from running she slowed down for a while. "What was she to do? Find the emperor the guard captain had said. The emperor was her uncle but how would he react to these troubles in his neighbouring duchy. Besides, the road from Berlin to Stettin might not look like much on the map, but in reality it was quite a trek. Especially for one that had no horse and no money... and no dry clothes or food for that matter.

Feeling extremely sorry for herself she continued regardless. She was not made for this sort of thing. She could not even remember the last time she had been out in the countryside without servants in two. Yet here she was. Alone. Wet. Scared.

Hear ears prickled as she thought she heard something in the distance. "What was that? A dog? A dogs barking?". She stopped for a moment to listen better. "Was it getting closer?". She cursed inwardly when she realized that it was. Had she not been taught proper manners she would probably have cursed like sailor. "He has released the dogs! And they are on to me!"

Starting to run again, her heart beating ever faster, she started off towards the nearby forest. If there were horsemen with the dogs they might have trouble in there. Upon entering she almost instantly regretted it. The ground was unstable, and she almost slipped. The branches on the trees seemed to lash out at her while she was running. Whipping her, adding bruises to her face, arms and body. Perhaps worse still it seemed like the barking was getting closer still. Some hooves could also be heard in the distance.

Biting her lip she tried running ever faster even though her legs fealt like lead. All of a sudden it was like she was flying. Her foot had caught something. Everything was a blur. "Was she falling? What was that brown thing?" Her question was answered quickly as she plunged headlong into a tree. The world blackened as she slid down into something wet. Wet mud. Darkness....

She did not know how long she had been out. "What was that? Hands? Groping her?" She fealt someone ripping open her allready torn dress. And she heard a cold, hard voice.

I will finish you as I was ordered bitch! But first I will have my way with you...

She opened her eyes and looked up at an ugly, leering face. He grinned evilly and reached for her throat with one hand, yanking her upright. She whimpered, her eyes widening with fright.

Nooo... !!!

Her plea was answered with a backhand strike to the cheek, sending her sprawling, facedown into the mud. A hand pulled her by the hair upright again, before she was turned and pushed up against a tree. She groaned in pain as the man tried to hold her with one hand while ripping her dress with the other.

Once again wincing in pain she somehow found new courage. Letting out a loud hiss, and finding strength she did not know she had she lashed out with one foot. It hit true in the mans groan area and he doubled over while only managing to let out a feeble yelp. Almost snarling with anger she pressed her newfound advantage and her foot now connected with the mans head, followed by a sickening crunch. Watching the man fall over into the pool of mud, she just stood there for a while. Catching her breath, her newly found courage slipping away, she looked at the prone form in front of her. Gathering the remnants of her clothes around her she spit on him in utter disgust before continuing on.

Her body fealt dead, but she had to continue. She had to keep going. Even if it killed her.

Albrecht Hohenzollern was busy eating an apple when the man from Wurzburg entered. After hearing him speak he took good time in carving pieces of the apple with his knife and then eating them before answering.

A chairperson? To the Central European Trade Pact? mmmm... yeeees

The chancellor carved another slice from the apple and ate it.

I will see to it that someone is sent in due time. Was there anything else?

Johann awoke with a start. There was some commotion in the corridor adjoining his cell. He heard the gruff voices of some guards, as they drug something into the cell next to his.

Just dump `im in there! He won`t live long with those wounds anyway haha! Josef sure nicked him good with that shot of his! Ptoeeee!!! Filth thinking he something just cuz he made captain

A groan was heard almost as if someone had just been kicked in the stomach. Then Johann heard a door close and being locked. He edged closer to the door so he was closer to the other cell and listened. The man in the other cell was breathing heavily and was obviously hurt bad from the sounds of it. Johann then whispered so that he would not be heard.

Are you all right in there?

A few moments passed before the other man answered.

Count Johann? Is that you? Thank the lord you are alive! I..

The other man had to catch his breath again before continuing. Pain from talking showing in his voice.

I am Captain von Sellen your grace. There are still men *heavy breath*.. men that are loyal. Men that would follow you if they knew where you were. And that you are still alive.

Some rustling could be heard from the other cell as the other man probably sat up.

Some of my loyal men will probably look for me when they find me missing. With any luck they might conclude that we are here and they might find us. I... I have sent.. your da... someone to talk to your brother in law.. the emperor. I am not sure this is the wisest thing to do though, but I figured he would have to act if he knew the throne of an imperial elector had been usurped by such. I fear for the messengers life though.. sh... I mean.. the messenger might encounter troubles along the way.

Johann leaned back against the wall and closed his eyes. Someone was notifying the emperor or other people outside Brandenburg. He was sure the captain had given the mission to his best man, and that was good. The guard was known to be very competent. Perhaps there was hope after all then.

Little did the Count Johann know that the "messenger" was his own daughter...

Looking bored and uninterested, Albrecht received the bohemian count. He looked at dully at him for some moments before speaking.

Good evening Count von Werngau. It is a .. pleasure .. to meet you. Now, was there anything you wished to discuss?
