My dear man,

I now that news travels fast these days, this is information I know nothing of..I can assure you that I am one of the most prolific supporters of Pope Josef..
*...Oh..God...I need a drink, help me God to resist temptations...amen!*

Cardinal de Montpetit is quick to answer:

"Your Holiness, let me present you this piece of paper, as written by the scribes in the Diet of the Holy Roman Empire. Those words were spoken by Paul von Russdorf.

Gentlemen,

I for one would like to help the noble Albert von Habsburg..under certain conditions..The empire should withdraw from Bohemia as soon as possible..if the Pope is interested in promoting the Holy faith, fine...but let the Papal State send it´s own men and money there, don´t bother the Empire..I see no reason to save his skin in this..do you?

Lord Georg, in my opinion there is no need to raise funds..simply turn the forces currently in Bohemia towards Rome and free Albert!..If he is in Rome..and cut the bonds between Pope and emperor once and for all !!

Those are NOT pro-Papal words."

Cardinal Dietmar enters, hearing of possible plots against the Vatican. He speaks, although his breathing is slightly heavy - all this traval has taken its toll on the man.

Gentlemen, this is why the Archbishop of Cologne is attempting to forge a deal, perhaps even a comprimise of sorts, between the Empire and His Holiness - there are some who do not trust the Papacy and perhaps more who believe that they are not to interfere in certain instances. I only hope that the deal will go through...

Cardinal Bouchiers' ears prick up at the sound of the words "forge a deal","comprimise",and "there are some who do not trust the Papacy"....... He could not believe it.

"Deals" with the Vicar of Christ!?

Make the supreme Pontiff "Compromise"?!

NOT TRUST THE WILL AND WORD OF GOD????!!

His mind was realing and head pumping with pressure. He turns bright red and is sorry to see there is no "Medicine" available.

Meenwhile Arch Bishop Kirk Picard starts writing a note. When he finishes it he places wax upon it sealing it with his ring. He then passes it to a messenger to take to the popes post room, to be read at his leisure.

Cardinal Bouchier, you seem to think we are speaking of something underhanded. There are some in the Empire who are anxious to get their Emperor back in one piece, so the Archbishop made a deal with His Holiness to have the Empire gain custody of Albert if he is removed from his position as Emperor, never to regain it. He would thus be punished and His Holiness would be satisfied.

To the room of the French king in Rome, there is a firm knock on the door, after the guards verify the visitor’s identity, he is let inside.

Charles VII immediately recognize the man, it is Pierre Vandamme, the French Kings own private spy.

Pierre Vandamme walks up to the King, and they embrace each other, thereafter Charles VII order the room to be empty, only Pierre and Charles are to talk.

Once the room is empty, Pierre start to speak.
Your majesty, I am sorry that I have not been here earlier, but my investigation of the death of Jean, took longer then expected and I have more proof.
Once she was captured, a local farmer told me that he had seen a tall, rather striking fellow, hurrying to Lorraine.

I immediately took my horse and rode after him.
Sadly I could not find the man.
So I rode in advance, and followed my hunch, and went to Vienna. And there I waited, until I heard a voice in my mind telling me to “Go to the palace, be there”.
It was almost midnight then, but I followed the voice and went to the palace back door entrance, and there I was pushed by a tall man and his wife whom entered the palace.
I did not think much of it by then.
But then I felt that in my pocket a letter had appeared.
I give you this letter now, before I continue.

Pierre hands over a letter to Charles VII, it reads:
Help me, I recognize you from when I met the King in Paris, I have been taken capture by the henchmen of the emperor, of what I have heard that are to take me to cottage south from Vienna, I have seen the cottage in my dreams, you will see it to. That is where they will keep me. I fear for my own life.

If I do not survive you must give this letter to the king of France.

Tell the king that he is not to blame for my death, the evil forces of hell has corrupted the minds of those whom abduct me, and God can’t reach them anymore.

Tell the King that I will always be watching over him, I and my patron St. Catherine will always look over him and guide him. It is my Holy Duty to make the kingdom for the French.
All you can see is France, and Frenchmen; it is unholy to have Englishmen ruling this land.

I am the Maid of Orleans, blessed by the clergy, guided by the almighty king in heaven, and until my task is complete I will always be by the kings side, always.

Do not despair; do not grow hatred and anger against those whom ordered my death, they where not in a clear state of mind, and God almighty will deal with them.

Signed
Jean de Arc

Charles reads the letter, and after every line he reads he gets more and more touched by the letter, and a tear strikes down his left cheek.

Pierre waits a moment, and then continues.
I understand the letter awakes bad memories, and makes the heart feel sorrow. But we must continue, there is more.

After I’ve read the letter, I made every effort possible to enter the Palace, but failed, I tried to bribe the guards to let me into the dungeons, but it seems that the highest power of Vienna had paid them of to well.

I made one more attempt to enter, and this time I was thrown into the dungeons myself. While I was imprisoned I kept having the same dream, an image of a cottage and a city. And I suddenly remembered the letter “, I have seen the cottage in my dreams, you will see it to” and after a month I was released and followed my dreams direction to the cottage, and there I found her tied to a stool, I took up my knife, about to release her, but then suddenly the door behind me opened and two men attacked me at instance, and manage to knock me down.

When I woke up, I had been thrown in the forest, fatally wounded not far from there, I went back to the cottage, and imperial troops where there investigating the cottage so I could not enter. I paid a local farmer some coins to let me stay there until I have recovered from my injuries. And from him I heard that the lady inside was dead. I then moved with haste to Paris, but you where not there, so I rode to Rome, and here I am.

Charles VII tries to calm down, and say a few words
I also had that dream, but I did not understand why either. Thank you for your faithful service, leave me now and take the letter to his holiness and to the Cardinal of Burgundy, explain that it is for their eyes only.

Pierre bowed and walked out, just as he closed the door he heard the king crying….

Cardinal Bodeker enters and strides to Cardinal Corleone.

"Brother, I have word that the Archbishop of Mainz himself shall arrive in Rome, perhaps within the day, to attend the Conclave. Also on the road and traveling with all haste is the Archbishop of Bavaria. The Archbishops of Luxembourg and Munich are summoned, and presumably on the roads as well and should arrive shortly.

"The one remaining Cardinal of our Province of Germania is the Archbishop of Prague. Of him I know nothing. But would believe that he is either dead at the hands of the Hussite heretics or suborned to heresy himself."

Archbishop Henirich von Witnterstein enters the Papal chamber bows to the pope and speaks:

"Holy father i have hurried as fast as i could for the Papal Conclave, let it be known that Bavaria is here."

Cardinal Corleone holds his hands up in what he hopes is a humble-looking gesture,

"Please, Eminences... Excellencies... you must refrain from addressing me as 'Your Holiness'. Whilst I am touched that you address me with such a hallow'd title, I am not the Pope."

Not yet, at least, Lucianno, he mentally corrects himself.

Corleone1.gif

He is brought back into the present when a transcript of Paul von Russdorf's statement made in the Imperial Diet is thrust into his hands:

"WHAT??" Corleone screams aloud, briefly shattering the aura of majesty and sheer beauty that the frescos and gilded columns that decorate the chamber's interior lend the papal court.

The Cardinal attempts to regain his composure with a shaky grin,

"Bishop Brauche," he says icily, fixing the Livonian bishop with a witheringly polite gaze, "perhaps you would be so good as to explain to us what a member of Kirsten Wasa's diplomatic staff is doing when he SUGGESTS TO THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE A MILITARY OFFENSIVE AGAINST OUR HOLY MOTHER CHURCH!!" Corleone's voice rises to an accusatory crescendo, flecks of spittle flying from his mouth. Without turning to look at him, Cardinal Corleone thrusts the offending document painfully hard into the chest of the unsuspecting Father Angelo, to be taken to the Livonian bishop.

Angelo does not wait to be told twice.

Still breathing heavily and obviously unsettled by his own rage, Corleone tries to control himself. He turns to Cardinal Dietmar,

"I... that is to say, His Holiness does not deal with anybody, brother Cardinal." Corleone's hands clench and unclench reflexively by his sides.

"To not trust the Papacy is not to trust the Church and not to trust the Church is not to trust the Will of God himself... WOULDN'T YOU SAY, BISHOP BRAUCHE?" The Cardinal rounds the arguement on the flatulent Livonian churchman.

At this point, Cardinal Bernardi, one of Corleone's peers, approaches him and mutters something in his ear.

"Ah yes," Corleone nods, a degree of composure easing back into his demeanour as Bernardi takes his leave.

Corleone seeks out the eyes of both Cardinal Bouchier and the King of France,

Corleone2.gif

"Yes, Your Eminence... Your Majesty, the Holy See appreciates your maintaining the cease-fire in... your part of the world until the conclave is complete. My thanks on hehalf of His Holiness." He inclines his head.

At this point, the many cardinals that have been called to attend the conclave begin filling in.

"Welcome, welcome, Your Eminences," says Corleone, watching each man come through the door, taking a mental note of the name of each churchman to arrive with the air of a farmer counting his sheep.

Corleone nods to Cardinal Bodeker, "Thankyou, Your Eminence; yes, we give our prayers for the Cardinal Archbishop of Prague in these trying times..."

More Cardinals file through the door as Cardinal Corleone gathers up the letter from Pierre Vandamme.

Holding the rolled up parchment aloft to gather the Congregation's attention, Corleone announces,

"Thankyou all for coming, my brothers. Ahem, if I could have your attention, all those who will be attending the conclave; please remember: it will begin tonight at midnight."

And with that, he turns and leaves the chamber.

This really is a lot easier than it looks, he thinks.

A sheet detailing the order of the conclave is handed out to all the Cardinals present at the Lateran.

PAPAL CONCLAVE

The Cardinal heads of the diocese of all Catholic Europe and the Cardinal heads of the metropolitans therein have been called to the Lateran in Rome by His Holiness Joseph I, Servant of God's Servants, Vicar of Christ on Earth, Successor to St. Peter, Bishop of Rome and Pontifex Maximus.

The proceedings of the Conclave

· Will begin with a hearing of all those legates present of their thoughts and meditations regarding the role of Archduke Albert of Austria, hitherto, due to his fine service to both Church and Empire called Holy Roman Emperor, in the proven kidnap and murder of Jeanne d'Arc, the Maid of Orleans.

· The conclave will move into it's next phase when the presiding body, who will be His Holiness the Pope or his appointed subordinate, deems it necessary. At this time, having taken into account the statements of those present at the conclave, a series of votes will be passed, the topics of which will be based upon the initial stage of the conclave. The parameters of the voting system will be decided at the time by the presiding body, based upon the number of cardinals present at the conclave.

· In the concluding stage of the conclave, the Holy Pontiff will issue series of Holy Bulles based upon the result of the voting and also great deliberation and prayer.

The first round of the conclave will begin as this copy of the order of the Conclave is handed to you.

Cardinal Turcotte rises, bows slightly to the Cardinal Corleone, and speaks.

"Though like all of my brethern here today, I love the emperor (a few none to friendly giggles at that) I must confess that this atrocity is quite horrid. Why in the world would his imperial majesty want to hurt Jean d'Arc unless he were allied with the English? Also, why would, if his cause were just, would he not inform us? Though the Maid was a great leader and religous woman, perhaps the emperor could have found something she had wrongfully done. But no, he made no statements, informed no-one. Thusly, he must have had no good, pure, cause. And because of this, I condemn him. I believe he should have the office of emperor stripped of him. Also a solemn vow by the diet that they shall not elect him to that office again. Thank you."

Cardinal Bodeker leans over to speak to Cardinal Corleone.

"Brother, I received a note from the Bavarian party as they arrived that the Archbishop of Mainz is on his way, but may be a day or two late in arriving. Evidently, the Archbishop fell slightly ill and was unable to travel. However, he was recovering when left by the Archbishop of Munich and should arrive shortly."

Cardinal Richard Bouchier rises to make his initial statement.

"Cardinal Corleone....... I choose to speak on this mater, not as an Englishman but as a Churchman, foremost."

"It is my considered opinion that we might consider a couple of points."

"The dislike the Emperor has shown for the Federation has been aparent. We should consider this a moment... hard."

"Why would he risk this contrary act when this is so?"

"I suggest, that the "Maid of Orleans" was a witch, and he saw through her. For even his stout defence of France, would not allow such a creature to exsist."

"Has anyone asked his Imperial Majesty his motives?"

"This does not meen I condone his methods, for the inquisition and purification by flame is the normal procedure is such a case. But he chose not to do it publicly. Was it fear of the reaction from his electors?"

"Words are uttered of aggretion toward the Pope in the Diet. Has anyone asked his Imperial Majesty to calm his supporters and instruct them to follow the word of the pope?....... I doubt it."

"I take it that this maid was not confirmed as holy by the Holy Father? and it was the French that declared her so?...... I'm afraid that's not good enough."

"The matter, that the Emperor has bought shame to the Empire, is apparent, but i suggest it might just be his methods and inabilty to communicate that have brought him to this point."

"When is it the time for an Emperor to disclose his mind to his people? He is THE Emperor after all."

"Until we hear from him, it will be hard to pass judgement. May we call him in?"

[An escort of three riding men arrive at the gates of Rome. The guards do not believe that this is the escort of the Cardinal of Vilnius, because of the simple clothing of the riders. However when one of the Cardinals of Rome sees the escort, he recognises Motiejus the Cardinal and lets him in. While travelling through Rome, both Cardinals start talking]

"Tell me, Motiejus, how is life going in the far east from where you have come?"
"Oh, there is not much to talk about - the life is peaceful. However I have many problems, the main being that there are not enough priests who speak Lithuanian. Therefore the people do not understand the words of God as they should, and so there are still many pagans left in the country."
"Then I would suggest that you ask His Holiness that He orders to build an university in Vilnius."
"Yes, a wise suggestion indeed. I will do as you have told me."
"On a side note, I have recieved rumours that Lithuania is siding with the infidels."
"What? No no, this is impossible. Tell me more about what you have heard."
"Well, I heard that there are many ambassadors from Novgorod and Muscowy travelling in and out of VIlnius, so it is possible that Grand Duke Vytautas is planning something."
"Yes, he is planning something."
"Then what is it?"
"I do not know for sure, but it seems that he is willing to start a crusade against the true infidels from the east."
"Oh... Seems that I was mistaken. But then, why isn't he searching for allies?"
"He has allies. The Northern alliance is stronger than ever and at least Livonia will be willing to aid Lithuania. Also, the messengers you know about - they are also carrying messages of alliances. An alliance between Lithuania and Russia will help us to end the terrible infestation of Christian lands."
"But... how can the Duke ally with infidels orthodoxes?"
"No no, you are mistaken, my friend. In the far east where we live, Orthodoxes and Christians coexist in eternal peace and work together. It will be a terrible thing if the Orthdoxes were persecuted in Lithuania."
"Well, it is not for me to judge, but I still think it will be better for Lithuania to ally with Catholics and not Orthodoxes."
"It is not for me to judge this."

[The two cardinals walked along the streets of Rome, talking about other less important theological matters. Upon reaching the Papal Court, they said goodbye tyo each other and Cardinal Motiejus went to the living chambers.]

Cardinal de Montpetit speaks up:

"Tell me, Cardinal Bouchier, if a girl is not seen by the clergy of England as sent by God, is she automatically a witch?

If so, there must be alot of witches everywhere...

As many as Lollards, perhaps."

He laughed a little.

"Anyways, I agree that we must hear from the Emperor himself. He will have to answer to the proofs presented during my Inquisition. This matter is getting even more ridiculous that some member of the Diet, even without reading the proofs, are saying he is necesseraly innocent. As if they were under some kind of enchantment."

"Sorcery, perhaps."

Cardinal Ortucchio was in his quarters in Rome, preparing to head to the conclave. The news had just hit him, the rebels had made camp in the Black Sea, the colonies of Kaffa and Kerch. Many questions poured into the Cardinal's mind, but they were all cut short when the door opened. Cardinal Ortucchio's mind was set on alert, and he immediately grabbed his sword, but it was too late. He felt a heavy weight on the back of his head, and then darkness.

_______________________

The assassins were experts, and they made sure the Cardinal survived the blow. The assassins had planned it very well, and while Rome thought that the Cardinal was back in Genoa, Genoa would think the Cardinal was in Rome. No one would know of his disappearance.

With much stealth, the assassins moved the Cardinal to the carriage waiting outside, and rode south, towards the coast.
