PAPAL COURT
shield_PAP.gif
Of His Holiness Joseph I, Servant of God's Servants, Vicar of Christ on Earth, Successor to St. Peter, Bishop of Rome and Pontifex Maximus

0305.jpg

...In The Beginning,

Joseph strides down the marble-lined hall of the Lateran Palace, footsteps ringing purposefully on the floor. The colourfully dressed Swiss Guard have tactfully timed their march in rhythm with the Pontiff's steps as they follow at a respectful distance.

Various churchmen, from priests to cardinals, stop and kneel as the Holy Father passes them. Joseph acknowledges them with a benevolent gesture as he strides past.

As he draws nearer to the Papal Court-room, the sound of monks' chanting filters through the huge, baroque corridors to his ears and as the doors swing open before him, more and more members of the Papal Curia emerge and fall into step behind him.

A sense of timeless ritual and importance flows up in his chest and his hackles rise as the various ambassadors, potentates and petitioners fall to their knees as he enters the room.

The Pontiff reaches the Papal Throne and sits. With one hand, he signals to the assembly to rise.

PONTIFICAL DECORATIONS
shield_PAP.gif
Pontifical decorations are the titles of nobility, orders of Christian knighthood and other marks of honour and distinction which the papal court confers upon men of unblemished character who have in any way promoted the interests of society, the Church, and the Holy See.

The papal orders of knighthood, ranking according to their importance and dignity, are:

  • [*]Supreme Order of Christ;
    [*]Order of St. Peter;
    [*]Order of the Golden Militia, also called of the Golden Spur;
    [*]Order of The Holy Sepulchre
papalseal.gif

Supreme Order of Christ
The Supreme Order of Christ is of Portuguese origin. The papal and Portuguese order are one and the same, for a two-fold reason; the pope is the head of every religious order and can admit to solemn profession in any order without the permission of its superior general, and, further, in the Bull of approvals he reserved to himself and his successors the right to create knights of the order, a right which was exercised by the popes and recognized by the kings of Portugal.

The decoration is a long red cross, bordered with a narrow gold band, whose extremities are of a trapezoidal form, surmounted by a royal crown, which, in turn, is surmounted by a military trophy attached to the ribbon. Upon the centre of the long red cross is superimposed a small, simple, white enamelled Latin cross.

The official dress of a professed knight of this order is white.

papalseal.gif

Order of St. Peter
This order's object is to fittingly reward noble and conspicuous deeds which merit well of Church and society, and to stimulate others to follow the illustrious example set them. At first it comprised only two classes, Knights of the Great Ribbon, who, upon receiving the decoration, were made nobles with hereditary succession, and Commanders with the Badge, whose title of nobility was personal.

Knights of the Great Ribbon wear a wide ribbon extending from the left shoulder saltier-wise to the right side where from a rosette attached to the ribbon the star of the order is suspended.

Commanders with the Badge wear the decoration at the neck and have a badge of smaller design than the large plaque on the breast.

papalseal.gif

Order of the Golden Militia/Spur
To this order are to be admitted only those who have distinguished themselves in an eminent degree, and either by feat of arms, or by their writings, or by any other conspicuous work, have spread the Catholic Faith, and by their bravery have safeguarded, or by their learning made illustrious, the Church of God.

To ensure its continued high grade of excellence and desirability, its founder limited it to one class and one hundred knights for the entire world. It can be conferred on those already knighted in the highest orders, even that of Christ, as well as on those who have never received any order of knighthood. The honour is bestowed by a "Motu Proprio" (Pope's own motion) and as such is expedited through the secretariat of State, and free from all chancery fees.

The decoration is an eight-pointed or bifurcated yellow enamelled gold cross, with a gold trophy on top and pendent from the inner sides of its bifurcated foot is a gold spur. On a small white medal in the centre of the cross the word MARIA is surrounded by a golden circle.

The cross is worn suspended by the ribbon of the order which encircles the neck. The badge is attached by the ribbon to the left breast of the tunic.

Issued to the Elector-Count of the Palatinate
Issued to Cardinal de Montpetit, Head of the Holy Officium of Inquisition

EOHSJcross.gif

Order of the Holy Sepulchre
St. James, first Bishop of Jerusalem, the Empress St. Helena, Charlemagne, Godfrey of Bouillon and Baldwin I, are among the reputed founders of this order. According to the opinion of critical historians, the order is a branch of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem which was approved (1113) by Pope Pascal II.

This most desirable and honourable distinction is granted as a reward for the great labour, fatigue and expense of a journey to the Holy Land.

shield_KNI.gif

The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem
This is most important of all the military orders, both for the extent of its area and for its duration. It is said to have existed before the Crusades.

The origins of the order have given rise to learned discussions, to fictitious legends and hazardous conjectures. The unquestionable founder was one Gerald or Gerard, whose birthplace and family name it has been vainly sought to ascertain. On the other hand, his title as founder is attested by a contemporary official document, the Bull of Paschal II, dated 1113.

Issued to the Knights of St. John

A tall man of great girth enters wearing the garb of a bishop, bows before the Holy Father and kisses his ring:

"Holy father what a great honor it is for me to be in your pressence. I am Bishop Helmutt von Burkhart sent by Duke Wilhelm Albrecht von Wittelsbach of Bavaira to represent his nation here in your court. I hope that i will be accepted and my Duke wishes it to be known that while Bavaria does not have a Cardinal position he fully supported your election as pope. He hopes that Bavaira and you Holy Father will work together for many years in the goodness of the Church and for the honor of Christ. He also sends in honor of you a cross handcrafted in the Bavarian Alps from wood of the Bavarian Black forrest. I await your response Holy Father i hope that you will allow me to stay here in Roma with you."

von Burkhart bows and kisses the papal ring once again and awaits the Holy Father's response.

Cardinal Ortucchio enters the Papal court, bows before the Pope, face to the floor. He rises his head slightly, to speak.

"Your holiness,

I hate to horde you with problems already, but I must speak with you in private about a certain matter that has arisen at home. As always, I am your humble servant."

A man in the cloths of a Bishop entered the Court in Rome. The Bishop bowed and spoke.

"Your Holiness,

I am Tomasso Esverne, the Bishop of Taranto. I have been sent by her Majesty, Queen Giovanna of Naples, Regent of Normandie, to represent Normandie in Rome for religious reasons, as the Cardinal was killed by Erick of Naples while trying to escape."

A familliar figure enters the court.

As he looks around the Papal court, nothing really has changed. Well, there is one thing... Jean de Montpetit is now a Cardinal, and not a bishop.

"Well, what does it change really?" he asks himself. He then remembers the frustration of not attending the Council of Melk, and to be excluded from most decisions made by the college of Cardinals.

"Much, I guess". He smilled.

Two doors opened in from of him, and there he was, in front of the Pope Josef 1. This man who he had called "My friend Josef Von Coblenz" had now to be called "His Holiness Josef the First". Well, that's what the case of many people he knew. That little Marie de Berry was now Duchesse de Berry, and the child Myriam was now Countess the Montainblanc.

Time changes titles, and time changes people too, sometimes.

He then looked at the Pope, sitting on the throne. He looked at him as an equal, he still couldn't believe the words he had said to the College of Cardinals. "I retire from the Papal Race". Well, now, his situation was not so bad, but he did have to submit to the will of the Pope. And he had to bow...

"Your holiness,

I would like to thank you for your blessing, and for allowing me, your humble servant, to become Cardinal. If there are other duties you wish to give me, I will be forever grateful, for my will to reform this build a strong Church is only surpassed by yours!

Many nations will want to trade their votes of confidence for you against many priviledges. Cardinalship, for example. I would advise to study carefully the situation, as the promised reforms should take time to sink in people's mind.

Also, I hope you will start inquisitions into important matters, for example your predecessor's death, Naples and Genoa's faith and the Federation. Those are delicate issues that will be brought to you, and will take alot of time to settle.

If I can help in any matter, I remain your servant."

He then sits down.

The Bishop of Mallorca is still around and before departing back to his small Island takes a chance to say farewell to the new and glorious Pope.

"You Holyness, I'm about to leave to take care of my people home. I do hope we will take care in the just meassure of all those unpious and blasphemers that have laughted in your predecesor's face. Christiandom certainly would expect such. We are also more than ready to see you take under your Holy supervision those heretic lands in the South...The departure of that scoundrell of Erick doesn't change the fact that we have to fully cleanse those lands from evil spirits..please anex those lands for the glory of the Lord till they are propperly purified for amother secular Lord"

Taking out two heavy volumes from one of his attendant's hands, he monitors them to the Pope.

"Please your Holyness, be so generous as to inscribe those two volumes of your own works "Life and miracles of the Saints" I will make sure they will be treasured in Mallorca's Cathedral from generations to come"

Jagiello enters to hall to his audience with the new pope. He feels both humiliated und happy, due to his spirit lifting in these halls, a monument for God himself.

"Your holiness,
It is an honor to be here"

Jagiello bows before the pope and kisses his ring.

"May your leadership be wise, benevolent and in God's favor. I am as always your humble servant as you are the servant of God himself"

The new Pope spreads his hands benevolently and smiles. He addresses his flock for the first time.

"My children, bless you for coming so soon. Thankyou for your kind words, they will not be forgotten."

"There is much to do; let me first greet you and address your concerns,

to Bishop Helmutt,

Welcome, Your Grace. Ahh, your gift is divine and profound in it's spiritual simplicity. I shall cherish it.

to Cardinal Ortucchio,

There is nothing you cannot say before all here, Your Eminence. You are in the very heart of all Christianity and you need not feel ashamed to speak your innermost thoughts. However, if you wish to speak with me in my praivate chambers, I shall meet you there once I have addressed all those present.

However, I should warn you that I am not pleased with the Doge's handling of his relations with Naples in the last few months and he would do well to know this.

to Bishop Esverne,

Welcome, Your Grace. Indeed, the heretic King Erick of Naples caused much strife before his sudden demise. We shall give you guidance regarding Normandy's duties over Naples in the days to come. Go with God, my child.

to Cardinal de Montpetit,

Ah, my old friend. I trust your new robes fit you well? You certainly do them justice. Please allow me some time and then we will discuss your new appointment in full. In the mean time, I have had accomodations here at the Lateran prepared for you which you will find fitting to your future roles, I hope.

to Cardinal Frontenac,

Welcome, Your Eminence. You have come a long way; both you and Bishop Esverne must be exhausted. Please make yourselves comfortable in Rome, I shall enjoy listening to your council, Cardinal Frontenac.

to the Bishop of Mallorca,

Oh... where shall I sign... here? To whom shall I address the... ohh, of course, they're not for you, but your sister."

The Pope hands the two mighty tomes to an attendant, who returns them to the good Bishop

"Yes, Your Grace, you are quite right. As Martin, God rest his soul, became more withdrawn, far too many liberties were taken at the Church's expense.

I can assure you all that those days have come to an end and that the perpetrators shall be suitably punished."

The Pontiff stands and beckons to Cardinal Ortucchio,

"Your Grace, shall we retire for that discussion you wished for?"

As the two churchmen retire from the room, the Pope intones the words,

"In nomine Patri, et Fili, et Spiritus Sancti."

Cardinal Guisseppe Raponi enters the court

It is a wonderful day to behold the most wise and holy father of all mankind. I am pleased to see a new Vicar of Christ, seated comfortably in Rome. On behalf of St Mark, I look forward to getting to know our St Peter. Welcome to Rome your holiness.

(bows before Joseph I)

Pope Joseph returns from his very brief conversation with the Genoan Cardinal Ortucchio. He is, to all eyes, completely calm.

Returning to the Papal Throne, he addresses the latest petitions with the gusto of one new to a task,

"to the Bishop from Livonia,

Your Grace, I completed the final reforms to the College of Cardinals only a small while ago. As you may have noticed I have placed a document bearing full details of the new changes in the entrance to the papal court, where it shall remain for your perusal.

To Jagiello, King of Poland,

Your Majesty, the honour is all mine. Please, do not hesitate to leave a legate here in your name if you wish to return to Poland, which, I'm sure, suffers for your absence."

Auvergne

The Cardinal from Auvergne looks at all the questions asked by his brothers, and suddenly feels glad for a moment not to have to answer to all of these.

After he has heard the answer from the Pope, he bows: "Oh, take the time you need... there is much for you to do right now."

"Your Holiness," he says, bowing before the Pope, "what a joy, what a joy indeed, it is to see you here! Not only has the Church avoided yet another potential strife, she has also been blessed with a new Holy Father, and one who is destined for greatness!

A man enters and steps before his Holiness.
"Your Holiness,
I am Bishop Mendel from Luxembourg. I have been dispatched here by duchess Elisabeth to ask you for your support in our just war against the uprising of the mad king of Hungary. He has for no reason broken the oath of vassalage with our country, even in light of the fact that duke Sigismund I. had himself only granted the people of Hungary independence, rather than to opress them with force. So now we seek your advise and support, your holiness."
The bishop bows and retreats.
