Ortucchio greeted the Pope once again.

Holy Father, the things we talked about the Doges father proved to be impossible but....

there is still a matter of the Doge himself. He is very torn up about not being considered a member of the catholic community. The Doge is a very pious man and every day he is denied his church and faith is like a day in hell for him.

Would there perhaps be any way the good Doge could be absolved of his sins, and be allowed to return to the flock?

Bischof von Mollwitz speaks with His Holiness again: "Perhaps, Holiness, I could prevail upon the Archdiocese and the Crown to make regular such donations. The annual revenues of the Crown are about 70,000 marks... I believe that some tithing would be appropriate, Holiness."

Frontenac smiles.

"Yes, your Holiness of course I understand the great work you have done to spread Christianity, and rebuilding the noble lands of Bourbonnais. We are in fact very happy for that, and therefore I am glad to say that we find your offer acceptable!"

He turns to a monk behind him, the monk gives the cardinal a draft and Frontenac hands it to His Holiness.

"Here, my scribes have made a draft, I hope this looks acceptable?"

Bourbonnais Treaty

In the year 1440 at the Vatican in Rome, His Holiness Pope Pius II Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church (Pontifex Maximus), Patriarch of the West, Primate of Italy, Metropolitan Archbishop of the Province of Rome, Sovereign of the States of the Church, Protector of the Eastern Roman Empire, and Servant of the Servants of God has seen that the state of Bourbonnais have for long enough been under Papal control, and it will now return to the control of the state of France.

I. His Holiness and the Vatican have seen that now time has come to return the over lordship of the state of Bourbonnais back to the state of France.

II. For compensation for the great work of His Holiness and the church in the state of Bourbonnais His Holiness will be given 15.000 acres of good fertile land around Berry, 10.000 acres around Bourbon, and some 15.000 acres spread around the lands of the French king.

III. The 15.000 acres in the land of the king of France will be from the rich and fertile lands of Lyonnais.

"I hope you accept this your Holiness?"

Cardinal Maximilian Donners of Meissen Turns to the Pope.

"Dear Pope Pius, I know that this request has been brought up before, by a Saxon Archbishop before me, but I think that I ought to ask you, as God is humble, and is a man of forgiveness. It is the issue about the two Saxon Dukes Friedrich II and Sigismund I. Still are they not buried in blessed, sacred soil, still have they not gotten the chance to meet God Almighty himself, so that he can, or not, grant them access to heaven. After all your Holiness were these two young men, chosen by God to be rulers of Saxony."

Pius looks a little confused.

"Hmm... I'm not sure I know exactly what you talk about there, good cardinal Donners. What have these two men done to offend the church? What was their unholy crime to be punished for? I have not heard much about this matter, except something about a mad duke of Saxony. It is not even certain that there is anything the church can do for their souls... and if we could, there would be HUGE expenses to be concidered in the VERY delicate process of... uhmm, these things."

The Saxon Cardinal looks at the Pope.

"Your Holiness, I shall give you a brief story of the two brothers. The first one was Friedrich II, he became Duke at a very low age, and was declared a heretic by the church for something. I do not think it was so specified exactly for what he got this title, but so it was. Concerning sigismund, Friedrich's yougner brother, who got the crown after the abdication of Friedrich, he committed suicide at the Imperial Elections that elected Emperor Victor I as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, after some rather harch words from a Pomeranian delegate."

"Hmm... I must get all information about the heresy charge before I can comment on any possibility about a enquiry into the case. I'm afraid the question at hand has no apparant solution."

A Cardinal from the East enters

sladkevicius.JPG

He kisses the Papal Ring, then speaks

Greetings Your Eminence, I am Archbishop Kastulis Vidutyte, of the lands of Lithuania. I have been sent here to act as mediary between the catholic peoples of my land, and his Holiness. The Grand Duke Vytautas sends his warmest regard and his hope for fruitful collaboration. He also sends with me his first interaction.

As your gracious Eminence well knows, Vytautas reigns over a vast land and peoples, the largest Christian realm on earth no less. Is it because of the inherent discord that comes from such large and varied population, that not more than 200 years ago, your Predecessor , Innocent the IV. Authorized then Duke Minduagas, to be crowned as King of Lithuania.

In return King Minduagas baptised his entire peoples into the Catholic fold, and served as a bulwark of the Roman church against the pagans and heretics of the east.

Grand Duke Vytautas has further conslidated his lands and his peoples faith to the mother church. And ask that the Lithuanian people once again have their royal catholic sovereign. The Grand Duke formally asks your authorization to have him coronated the King of Lithuania.

We eagerly await your response your Eminence.

Pius talked to the Saxon.

"My good man, I have not the time to investigate these things myself, however I have a man in Bremen that could ask their cardinal once the good Erasmus returns. However, how much would such an investigation be worth to your duchy? What you are asking will be time consuming and probably very difficult, if not impossible."

-----

The Papal secretary nods to the Venetian.

"He is ready to see you now, signor Berlusconi."

-----

His Holiness also has a meeting with the Lithuanian.

"Hmm... archbishop, the church greatly appreciates the great deeds that the Lithuanians have done for the glory of the church.
However, what you ask, a kings crowning, is a very complicated process... mmm, takes time to plan... the ceremonies etc. etc. How... important is the coronation to your grand duke?"

Pius gives the archbishop that kind of look of business that has made the Pope very rich.

The Saxon Cardinal looks confused at the Pope.

"Your Holiness, are you trying to say that Your Holiness has no interest in this issue, that he not want to investigate the circumstances around the two late Saxon Dukes, both brothers of the current one? This has a very high value of importance to Saxony and Duke Albrecht, and we would prefere you to investigate the matter, although we know that it can be delayed, because of Your Holiness' heavy schedule. But, we put our trust in that a investigation will be started as soon as possible."

Vidutyte speaks

Interesting, however I can assure you your eminence, its not nearly as much trouble as I suspect you may percieve. All the actual activities preperations and ceremonies, as according to tradition, will take place in Vilnius. As in the coronation of King Minduagas.

To answer your question, the upcoming coronation is of great importance to my Duke, firstly it is his right, secondly the lords and artisans of the realm demand it. As they too acknowledge the historical rights of their overlord.

This and the Grand Dukes pledge of unwavering fealty in the face of heresy, should be quite sufficient. You see your eminence, we ask your authorization mainly in deference to tradition, not out of obligation.

The Cardinal bows his head to the Pontiff

pragergroschen.JPG

Bischof von Mollwitz receives an unexpected surprise from Praha. Twelve hundred pragergroschen, direct from the royal coffers. The Crown had been generous to Rome-- he wondered if it were too generous, and thought of the possible connection to the poor spirit of the troops fighting in the Alps. He grinned at the suprise of Bohemians attacking from the south, from Liguria, rather than crossing the Danube. Sigismund banished any doubts about Ladislav's extravagance, deciding it was the cost of doing business. He dropped another sack of thirty silver pragergroschen on Pablo's desk, but kept the rest secure in his domitory. von Mollwitz wanted answers to the past months' audience before giving more.

"My good cardinal, what I'm saying is, that we will investigate the matter, IF this issue is precious to you. You know... what is it worth to you? Let me see if I can say this properly... hmm... the more lucrative this will prove to... Christianity, the sooner this investigation will begin."[/I]

Pius did not look pleased. Seemed he had to be more straight forward with this Lithuanian.

"Well, good Vidutyte, you may not need my authorization, but if you want it nonetheless, there will be a matter of honouring the church for its... mmm... services, yes. Let me perfectly honest with you, for that is how I am. If you want my authorization, I do not not think a... gift... would be too much to expect?"
