I'm playing a Hindu Merchant Republic and succession is unusually inscrutable. My most recent succession changed my ruler's caste, but not his political type; he changed from Vaishya to Kshatriya.
He inherited his predecessor's titles: the grand principality, two kingdoms, two duchies, four grand cities, three ordinary cities, the merchant house, a dama-castle, and one additional, curious grand city where his predecessor's Imperial capital was. He lost one kingdom title to his feudal nephew, the previous Grand Prince's son, whom I don't remember landing, but who now holds a thikana in his kingdom's de jure territory.
I remember doing something strange to land my present ruler. When he came back from being my mercenary captain, an appointment made to negotiate the rule preventing Vaishya castes from commanding, I gave him a duchy and suit that only had a thikana, which he was ineligible to hold otherwise. I don't remember, but I may have granted him a city before that.
