Things like this happen all the time. Unless a bastard event fired or someone else is in the line of succession, I don't see why he couldn't

Is it possible for an Arab catholic character to become KIng after his father ???I had a son from a muslim wife but he couldnt succeed....He was Arab Catholic...

Yes this is very common. I'm playing a game as the Kingdom of Jerusalem and almost my entire court is Arab (some Catholic some Muslim) as is the Royal family.

Infact in a game as Holland my Duke became a Arab despite me being nowhere near any Arab provs (an earlier Duke married an Arab).

Now, that I think about it, I was playing a game where I took over Jerusalem and Egypt. The Fatimids were spared ;) and I continued on my merry way. An Arab County had declared independence and swooped in before the fatimids could reclaim it. I got the vassal conversion to occur. Before long the shield dissappeared and the county changed color. Without knowing, I vassalized and converted the heir to the Fatimid Caliphate. His daughter converted aswell, so I had a line of Arab cultured Kings of Jerusalem descended from the de Hauteville's and the newly Christianized Fatamid Kings of Egypt.

Realistically though, Arabs who convert to Catholicism would change their names (or at least offspring not get Islamic names such as Muhammad, Abdallah, Umar, etc.)

That way you might get an Arab as King, but his name would be Charles or something. :p

Not possible with CK as character culture cannot be changed by event.

Hopefully in CK2 name lists will be possible to tie to both culture and religion, so any Arabs who civilize will pick from another list than muslim Arabs.

Yep, there's a huge difference between al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Wazzan al-Fasi and Joannes Leo Africanus, although the person is same. Converts like him seem to have picked Western names, but for Arab Christians best names would be Coptic, Maronite etc. But I don't expect that we will see such list of names, not at least in official patches.

In mediaeval times? Yes. Royal names were always changed; if somehow a Middle-eastern dynasty had christianized and gained the crown of a western state like England they would not be King Hussein, Muhammad etc. but rather King Harold, Mortimer.

Well, yes, but this is not due to religion or culture.

A europen king, when got the hungarian crown, would be called in a hungarian name.
Charles Robert was called Károly Róbert.
Even some hungarian names were changed, because they weren't good for a king. Prince Endre became King András, etc.

Modern times are not comparable to medieval days. Even today, though, many people take Islamic names when they convert to Islam.

In medieval times one was more likely to tie name with religion. To take a European name was seen as accepting Christendom and embracing a new life. Similar to how Christian Africans generally have names like Thomas, George, Francis, Jean, etc. (and accordingly how many African Muslims have names like Moussa, Ahmad, Ali, etc.)

Not everyone adopted Christian names (particularly when their names to begin with weren't particularly religiously-based or praised another religion), but at the very least a Christian with a secular "Islamic" (Arab) name would not want to give the same names to their offspring, and would probably prefer names for them emphasizing devotion to Christianity.

I achieved GC in the 1220s, with the reconquista and creating the king-titles of Mauretania, Africa and Egypt for myself quite early in the process. Hence I also had and still have a lot of Arabs as vassals, who got the vassal conversion event. That plus the now-Catholic Spanish counties (and recently, Egyptian ones) start generating Arab Catholic random courtiers. The weird part is when they start marrying everywhere, and my various vassal realms start having weird-cultured rulers due to semisalic and elective laws.

There's at least a Danish Knytling as the Duke of Somerset, and one of the Swedish duchies is ruled by an arab catholic. Large parts of Spain, Mauretania and Africa are ruled by occitans, since I started with Aquitaine and initially, when the expansion wasn't that rapid yet, took the lands from the muslim rulers and granted them to my courtiers. Rus, Khazaria and Lithuania are a mess in terms of ruler cultures, but I find that often happens anyway, since the various orthodox realms intermarry. There're some Finnish princes there too.

I would have to agree with Mrdie here. There is a distinction here, in that you are taking the name (here from French) and changing it into Hungarian. This is to do with culture, but the common denominator is that they are Christian in aspect. The problem with Arab Moslems converting to Christianity would be the same with Christians converting to Islam. A Frenchman converting from Christianity to Islam would not remain being known as Jean-Baptiste as it invokes wholly Christian person of Saint John the Baptizer. I do hope names become a little more tied to religion than culture. I still want culture specific names, mind you, just with a religious overtone. There shouldn't be a King Muhammad of France, nor should there be a Caliph John. Just my two cents...

Cheers,
~Hawk

While we're on the topic, this should apply to pagans converting too. The example that comes to mind for me is of course the Swedes conquering and converting Finland in real life. Väinö, Ukko, Tapio are names that refer to pagan gods or legends. Johannes, Juhani, Yrjö, etc. would be more christian.

(I haven't actually looked at the list of Finnish names in the game, just off the top of my head, based on what I remember seeing in-game)
