Appointing successor to Bishops - Very few names in pool

Just a quick question. I was under the impression I could name one of my heirs as successor to a Bishop, but I never seen any of my heirs on the list of names available. In fact, I rarely see more than one or two names as possible successors for any bishopric. I do have free investiture.

I have circumvented this so far by assigning them new conquered bishoprics or even creating a new one, but I am curious as to why I am never able to do it through the succession screen, as no names are available.

Do your heirs have ecclesiastical education? By default only priests can be picked (however you can assign any char as a bishop if you create a new one).
Typically they will get the same kind of education as their guardian, so to make your sons eligible for church careers, pick their guardians wisely.

Also remember a bishop is no longer eligible as an heir (which probably is why you want to install them ).

oh I see... No, I didn't know you needed to have the son educated by a bishop in order to be eligible. It sure makes sense and is easily fixable. I'll give it a try on my second son (he is just 5 right now).

You cannot appoint your current heir in case that is what you're trying.

no, not the heir but the spare. I am have gavelkind succession and don't want to divide my realm upon my death ;-)

And also just remember they won't pop up in there until they're 16.

I like to marry my kid before actually appointing them though that way they'll have a kid just in case something horribly bad goes wrong

Just hope your bishop dies before you do, or make your spare heir to every bishopric.
