...the idea behind this is quite simple and realistic...

...you should be able to reduce R&D-time on new technolgies if they get applied in field by allies or nations you are at war with...

R&D for all weapon / new unit techs should be divided in different phase:

- basic design (time but less IC needed)
- development (time and IC needed equal)
- prototype / testing (IC but less time needed)

...means if you are at war with a nation that already has build (not just developed) improved medium tanks 75+ - you would get all the basic design techs needed for improved medium tanks (guns, suspension, engine, and so on...) for free !

...you wouldn't be able to build them at once - but R&D time would be reduced...

...as nice side-effect this would make tech outruns harder !

But reverse engineering is hardly a zero time/zero cost operation.

Not a bad little idea ... me likes it ... afterall if someone has come with the basic idea the others will soon come up with their own versions of it ...
:)

It would be interesting if somebody did a casestudy on some historic examples ... i.e. T34/Panther, Jet Fighters, Radar ... to see how big the influence actually was ...

Once the genie is out of the bottle, so to speak, ...

So in CORE-terms, you would get a bonus on Advanced Fighter Projects, but still have to develop the engine, the airframe etc. yourself (small bonus perhaps) ... do I interpret this correctly ?

The only problem I do see is that with historic 20/20 hindsight people will anticipate this and will treat it like free doctrines they get with certain events ... I mean they will adapt their playing-style knowing they can maximize their ICs that way

No, I don't support this idea the way you describe it.

Allies - They must "allow", i.e. give you the insight (or you have to apply friendly espionage to gather information). The country developing the tech or whatever should have a say in this. You will probably learn something if you carry out joint operations with an ally or train your forces etc with the other country.

Foes - Here you actually have to capture / get your hands on a whole piece of tank, radar etc etc in order to be able to do any reverse engineering and/or determine capability. In other words; if your country hasn't shot down an enemy fighter with the latest technology (for example a bomb-sight or whatever) AND the plane's interesting technology has survived the crash, AND the plane did not crash in the water AND the plane crashed in a reachable area, you shouldn't be able to learn anything from it. Regarding new engines, tanks, guns etc, the only thing you will be able to learn (without capturing the equipment) is performance etc.

What's probably correct regarding this idea is that you over time (e.g. some months after implementation by ally/foe (and with implementation I mean actual use on the battlefield), you will get the basic idea of where to direct your research efforts and thereby maybe decrease time needed.

I think there are many aspects that need consideration regarding such an idea, maybe some sort of random event-firing based on how many know the technology, how many uses it, have you met it in combat/on the battle-field etc etc. Another aspect, is of course, which sort of technologies should be subject for such an "informational change"? All techs? Those techs you meet on the battle-field? Industry-techs (you know they are producing rubber very efficiently, but how do they do it?). Computers used to decrease computing time for projects etc etc? (which you probably won't find in any captured equipment OR will see when you are visiting an ally who doesn't want you to know about its research facilities etc.

However, if it is possible to make some randomness etc in this, it might work (as you won't get the exploit angle pointed out by Disgustoid).

I really don't see the exploit (at least for majors)...

...if you just wait to achieve techs this way as a major you will get equipment approx. 1 or 2 years after starting a war with another one...

you would get the first 200 days for 2-4 IC for free...

...but then you would still have another 200 for 10 IC for development

...and 50 days for 20 IC for prototyping...

and another 150 days for building the unit...

so you can apply this "free" tech after 400 days ! (instead of 600)

...and you would spare just 400 to 800 IC and still have to pay 3000 IC !

...don't know if you would use this exploit for crucial techs as a major !
