But threat of excommuniation against Philippe le Bel was always present, and Boniface VIII, furious and ridiculous, was ready to call for a canonic assembly in order to pronounce the ultimate sentence. But this reaction was previewed by the french royal government, and Nogaret himself travelled to Italy, allied with the clan of Colonna, old ennemies of Boniface, and went with some soldiers and Colonna's partisans in papal summer cottage of Anagni, willing to force his immediate capitulation. Totally surprised by this energic action, Boniface VIII tried to resist, damned Nogaret (who will be excommuniated later for this outrage) and his master, but was in fact totally powerless, and would have been even captured and led to Lyon if Anagni's people didn't have protect him.
The legend tells that Nogaret, in order to crush the last reluctances of the Pope, slapped him and threw him to the floor. This could have explained the quick death of Boniface, only one month after this terrible events, who marked the definitive triumph of the 'raison d'Etat' over the idea of theocracy. For a long period of time, Papacy would be now under french influence. "
