Hi everybody,

I'm running my Paradox games on an ageing CPU, and I don't intend to replace it now.
So far, they work. They just get sluggish near the end. EU4 for example is very slow by the end of the XVIIIth century, almost unplayable for the last 20 years. But the biggest part of the game remains enjoyable.

As a consequence, I'm worried. With all these new tags and provinces, EU4 may become much more demanding for my CPU.

But, on the other hand, Rajahs of India didn't slow down CK2, because the game had apparently been properly optimized and the code cleansed.

So, I'm wondering... Will the game be optimized the way CK2 was, so that the new features will not make it overwhelming for good old machines ?

Supposedly yes, it has been stated numerous times that there are large scale optimizations as well, so performance shouldn't noticeably suffer. RoI did manage to pull that off indeed, so I'm hopeful, but only time will tell if it actually works out this time.

it may or may not but they are making a large effort to improve the efficiency of the engine so hopefully there'll be no impact, or only a minor one.

As the DLC only unlocks some features, the DLC will never hit performance. This is because people with the DLC, as far as I know, will always be able to play with people without the DLC.

The accompanying patch, however, may impact performance, and would, if they hadn't also increased performance in other ways. So, the end result should be that, on the same PC, the game should run with about the same performance.

There is no noticable difference in performance... For the 1% still on 32-bit systems, I'd recommend to upgrade as soon as possible, as not all those systems will handle the minor memory increase.

What I am about to say now will maybe not be relevant to vanilla players, but to the modding community it may:

Has the major optimisation work made possible the expected large increase in number of country tags (how many, roughly?) in 1.8, or is it completely unrelated?

I am thinking about whether my 880-tag mod (Aurora Universalis) needs tag trimming already now (since it occasionally crashes when launching games in later bookmarks) or could I hold out until 1.8 and enjoy the major optimisation work too?

Appreciated that this is on a non-commitment basis, of course (will not hold it against you), but just don't want to spend a lot of time reducing country tags in my mod only to find out that 1.8 sorted out a big deal of that for me, due to enhanced optimisation of the base game....

Good god. Is there a limit to optimization? I want to see 5000 provinces with the same gamespeed eventually.
